From the Back Cover
It took thirty years to build Peter's faith, but only three months to knock it down.

When Peter Chin moved his family into an inner-city neighborhood to plant a church, he was sure he was doing what God wanted. But in the span of a few months his family experienced a heartbreaking miscarriage, a break-in at their home, a breast cancer diagnosis, and the termination of their health insurance. Why would God allow these things to happen?

But God had one more surprise prepared for the Chins: a child, conceived in the most unlikely and dangerous of circumstances, through whom Peter would realize that although God's ways were wild and strange, they were always good.

Filled with twists and turns, deep insights, and surprising humor, Blindsided by God explores the reality of suffering, the mystery of God's ways, and why, even in the darkest times, there's always reason for hope.

About the Author
Peter Chin was born and raised in the Chicago suburbs and is the son of Korean-American immigrants. Intent on becoming a medical doctor, he attended Yale University, where he received a degree in history while also fulfilling requirements for medical sch

Honest and sobering storytelling with a dash of humor
By Herman Tam
I picked up this book at 4:30pm (right after the Seahawks declared victory over the packers) thinking that I would have a leisurely evening multitasking with cooking dinner and picking it back up after my daughter went to bed. But no, I read it from beginning to end all in one evening because it was so captivating.

And yes, I have grown to be skeptical of listening to messages from the pulpit about suffering and rolling my eyes about how the preacher over spiritualizes and delivers pat messages about suffering, but there isn't an ounce of that in this book. This is an honest account about the disappointment that Peter chin and his family have endured and it is also an account about the overwhelming faithfulness of God (delivered without the pat messages of course).

Peter Chin, thank you for your courage and bravery in being so vulnerable about how God has shaped you and how he is currently shaping you. May your life (and this book) be an example of how we can be more vulnerable with each other and how we can live our lives as co-sufferers in experiencing God's overwhelming love and goodness.

A great read! Who hasn't wrestled with these same questions of disappointment and suffering? Highly recommended.
By Tai L.
I've bought hundreds of books from Amazon, but this is my first ever attempt at a review. I think it's fitting though as Pastor Peter Chin's book struck a chord with me in a deeply personal way, weaving the age old questions of "is God good, and can he be fully trusted?" into his (and his family's) very personal story of faith and trust. It's written in a way that very easily draws you in, and I found myself reading the entire book in a single sitting!

There's a little bit of a "blue like jazz'" feel to it as it seems you not only get to know Peter on a personal level, but also his wife Carol and the rest of their children. I appreciate how the book leaves room for the mystery of God in suffering, and doesn't give pat and easy answers of "well this happened because God wanted to do this". Blind Sided by God draws you into the Chin family's story of faith with refreshing humor and flow, allowing at the same time for you to see similarities of struggle in your own journey...and ultimately coming out feeling like you've walked a little bit of the journey with this wonderful family of seven.

"Faith is made for the Hard and the Unfair..."
By Gardener&Reviewer
"Faith is not a breathing exercise to make us marginally more at peace in the midst of modern distraction. It is stern stuff that allows a person to stare into the darkest void and walk straight in. Faith was made for hardship, suffering, fear, sickness, and nights like this...
Faith shows its true power and full worth in such moments."

That's Pastor Peter Chin speaking.
The night he's speaking of was a night where he came to the end of all his reserves.
His beautiful young wife had aggressive breast cancer, coming close on the heels of the miscarriage of her third pregnancy. Their two daughters were under five years of age.
They had just moved to a new city, into a neighborhood infested with crime, for the purpose of planting a church.

Nothing that defined Peter before this point could help him now.
The fact that he was a pastor couldn't carry him.
The fact that he was her husband couldn't fight Carol's disease.
The fact that he was their father couldn't shield his daughters from fear.
Only a living God, One who is present with His people, could meet these needs.

In this new book, Peter takes us step by step through these dark, difficult, valley-of-the-shadow months.

The Chin's personal story is riveting. (The author may object to that, but it was.)
The trials they encountered came so hard and fast that it's no wonder Peter felt betrayal and despair when he thought of them all.
The wonder is that he can now point to providence, care, redemption, and grace as sustaining his family during it all.

In the beginning of the book, he tells us that he's not writing a theological treatise on suffering, he's relating his personal experience.
Without crossing the line into academic analysis, he brings forth some incredible insights.
When you get your copy, pay attention to these chapters- "The Mulberry and the Wisteria" and "A Minor Miracle."

How he keeps his sense of humor I don't know, but this is also one of the funniest books I've read in a while. (I started laughing out loud when he made this certain comment about the hospital elevator.)

Short review: This book will wrench your heart as you think about a family trying to deal with all of this, and it will move you to praise God as you see His presence in their lives.

Thank you Bethany House for my review copy. It's going on my keeper shelf.

Splendor in the Blood-stained Grass
By Smith's Rock
Though nothing can bring back the hour
Of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower;
We will grieve not, rather find
Strength in what remains behind; William Wordsworth

Rarely does an introductory quote capture the essence of a book as well as Tracy Kidder's choice of the above poem, and rarely does irony reach the intensity of genocide survivor Deogratias' name (Thanks be to God, in Latin).

The star rating system for books can be frustrating and misleading. Does a five star rating mean a new Jane Austen is on the loose? Does a four star rating mean a merely decent read? In the case of Kidder's Strength in What Remains Behind, my four star rating means a fascinating, thought-provoking, big-hit-with-your-book-club read. With serious books, and this is one, sometimes I get the sensation that I've put myself in harness, and in the effort to get the fruits of my labor I will be forced to trudge forward until the job is done. Strength in What Remains Behind is the opposite: once attached to the book by the first few pages, it will draw you wide-eyed and enthralled rapidly towards its conclusion.

Tracy Kidder's book, briefly, is the non-fiction tale of Deogratias. Raised in Burundi (neighbor to Rwanda), Deo lives a nearly idyllic life until the outbreak of ethnic violence in his country replaces Wordsworth's "of splendor in the grass, of glory in the flower" with a living hell that makes Dante's Inferno look like a pleasant winter destination resort. Deo, a Tutsi third year medical student, flees Burundi, arriving at age 24 in New York City with $200 in his pocket, the clothes on his back, and his will to survive. Kidder artfully alternates between Deo's fight for survival in the United States and scenes of the genocidal massacres that Deo witnesses in Burundi. Deogratias emerges as a complex and rich personality, more a testament to human resilience than a hero (though certainly not lacking in heroic qualities).

So many books, so little time... What will you get if you devote a few hours of your life to this book? Here's a sampling: a well told tale; repeated examples that support the premise that no matter how ragingly black the night of human behavior, some amongst us will light candles, and fight vigorously to protect that fragile light; a truly fascinating view of New York City's underbelly; and finally, you will get a detailed examination of modern African genocide. Kidder's description of the madness of the violence in Burundi and Rwanda is never pornographically detailed, but is nonetheless devastating. Genocide is an ancient human story, with Antarctica the only continent that has escaped its bloody stain. Kidder's somewhat labored search for the causes of genocide in Burundi and Rwanda may be the weakest part of his book. He cites one authority who claims that genocide in Burundi was caused by fear, as opposed to Rwanda, where it was caused by prejudice. Um.....is there an essential difference between fear and prejudice as root causes of genocide? Experts in primate behavior, including human, suggest that prejudice IS fear, of "the other". And do we truly care about whatever tiresome reason is being used THIS time to justify genocide, rather than about why it happens at all (consider reading Sex and War: How Biology Explains Warfare and Terrorism and Offers a Path to a Safer World) for an interesting take on human-on-human violence), or the profound slumber of the developed nations when it occurs outside of their spheres of interest?

Fans of Kidder's also fascinating book Mountains Beyond Mountains will be intrigued by the intersection of the lives of Paul Farmer MD (controversial and hyper-dedicated founder of Partners in Health) and Deogratias that is described in Strength in What Remains.

There is inherent tension in store for the reader of Strength in What Remains, and not just in the suspense of the story itself. The triumph and the tragedy of human behavior are contained between the front and back covers of the book. You, and if you belong to one, your book club, will be stretched between these two poles: Deogratias (Thanks be to God) and the unattributed quote "Tell me God, should I thank you, or forgive you?". May a rich discussion ensue!

Catharsis for us and the renewal of strength
By Aceto
Tracy Kidder's latest triumph follows in the footsteps of his masterwork, Mountains Beyond Mountains. The true story of Deogratias from Burundi to New York and beyond is for everybody, not for any particular special interest. The title, Strength in What Remains, is from Wordsworth's romantic "Ode: Intimations of Immortality from Reflections of Early Childhood". There are many other good reviews if you want to hear more of the particulars, so I want to instead introduce the author to those unacquainted.

Mr. Tracy, like John PcPhee and precious few others, is at the tiny top tier of journalistic authors of books, as opposed to articles of immediacy. Two years he spent listening to Deogratias tell his story and spent in other research. Years ago at the beginning of my technology career I read his "Soul of a New Machine", the story of the skunkworks of Data General Corp. at the dawn of mini-computers and client-server architecture. From then on I learned just to buy whatever he wrote. You teachers might start with his "Among Schoolchildren".

Mr. Kidder is the selfless writer. He does not choose topics to sell books. He has no ideological drum (or horse) to beat. He is not attracted to fads or celebrity, power or the rich. Those are left for the sycophantic, the mediocre, those unencumbered by talent and skill. He uses some sort of dowsing rod for profundity. He is also something of a phenomenologist, letting the truth bubble up from his uncompromising observation of people and circumstances. He does not editorialize or advocate. He does not pretend to understand more than he can show. But he introduces you to all the best people, besides his central figures, taking time to capture them fully.

In "Strength in what Remains, Mr. Kidder appreciates that he is is taking us places we do not know. So he includes all things of importance from different points of view. He himself does not appear until Part II, where he is finally comfortable explaining himself and his approach. He has a good historical section and five pages of sources. Here we meet again the sainted star of an earlier landmark opus, Mountains Beyond Mountains, the redoubtable Dr. Paul Farmer of Haiti and Harvard (Kidder's alma mater). Also, cameo appearances by Chaucer, Hanna Arendt, Primo Levi and St. Benedict.

It is instructive to point out that nowhere does Mr. Kidder mention his earlier book. He refuses to hawk his own stuff. He describes the episodes of Deogratias and Farmer without any mention of his own connections. He merely mentions Deogratias, Deo as called by others, at the library encountering a work called Infections and Inequalities. Deo must meet the author, I instantly recalled from the prior book. Sure enough, there is the great doctor himself, scourge of the self-absorbed. I almost want to say read Mountains Beyond Mountains first because you will wish you had, once you do. Besides, these monumental gifts do not last long. This is the kind at 3:00 a.m. where you are saying "Just one more chapter, dear" when finally a shovel turns out your lights. When I came to, I found her with the book, "just one more chapter, dearest".

I close with a short anecdote he tells of an Auschwitz survivor, who when asked about the blue numerals tattooed on his forearm replies that he always had trouble remembering his phone number. This book is an antidote to the bloated, grasping self-obsession which has infested our America.

With so many fine, worthy books we are showing each other in these pages, competing for our limited time, do not let these pass unconsidered.

Low-key account of genocide and recovery
By Allen Stenger
This is the story of Deo, a survivor of the Tutsi-Hutu genocide in Burundi and Rwanda and how he fared after escaping to America. Even though he was a medical student in Burundi, he started life in America as a homeless person living in New York's Central Park, who made a subsistence living delivering groceries. Through a series of almost miraculous encounters, he was able to lift himself up, graduate from Columbia University, and build a medical clinic in his native Burundi. Deo's is a life still in progress, and although his clinic is a triumph, we know he still has great things ahead of him.

This is to some extent a sequel to Kidder's earier book Mountains Beyond Mountains: The Quest of Dr. Paul Farmer, a Man Who Would Cure the World, about Dr. Paul Farmer and Partners in Health. Farmer is one of the people who Deo meets, and Deo begins working with PIH.

Kidder's writing is very vivid and immediate, and is told from Deo's point of view, so you feel as if you are traveling and experiencing all this with Deo. In particular you feel that he's not much better off as a homeless person in America than he was on the run in Africa, except that in America no one is trying to kill him.

On the other hand, because events are presented out of sequence, the vivid writing does not build much tension--the narrative starts in 2006 with Deo's return to Burundi, so we know that he has survived all the events that are detailed later and has prospered in his new country.

In Kidder's earlier book The Soul of a New Machine, the action was presented chronologically, and the book was always a cliff-hanger: you never knew until the end whether the team would succeed. In the present book the narrative tension is not in the arc of the story (which we know almost from the beginning) but in the anticipation of learning further, possibly horrifying, details about the kinds of lives most of us know nothing about.

Review

Stratosphere is truly the best thing I have read on technology and education.

Andy Hargreaves, Thomas More Brennan Chair, Lynch School of Education, Boston College

This is an incredibly timely book. It marks the future for education, for transforming learning modes and methods for everyone. Michael Fullan is once again leading the way for educators, with his construct of the stratosphere as an integrating and liberating force with technology and pedagogy as global partners in revisioning schools.

David Booth, Professor Emeritus, Ontario Institute for Studies in Education, University of Toronto

Beautifully and brilliantly written, deserving of the title Stratosphere. Full of deep insights, clarity, and humor. Michael Fullan has written a truly “must-read” for those who care about and seek to deepen their understanding of exciting and new possible worlds. Th is is one great book with uniquely innovative ideas.

Stratosphere is a must-read for anyone interested in the future of education. Fullan’s earlier works have made him an icon in the fi eld of education, but this is the best stuff he has ever written. In Stratosphere, he merges his expertise in the processes of educational change with a deep understanding of the new technologies to present a powerful plan for rethinking and reinventing education in America.

Michael Fullan is the world's greatest authority on school chnage. With Stratosphere he gives us a structure to actually be successful with the hyper seduction of technology. Without effective pedagogy and change knowledge, the fact that all our students have iPads means nothing.

Tech + New Pedagogy + Change Knowledge = Synergy for Educational Effectiveness
By Carolyn Kost
Fullan packs this pithy 80 page volume with his own vast experience with system-wide turnaround projects (his team raised the high school graduation rate in Toronto by 20%), intriguing studies that support his thesis, and a literature review of books about innovation and other compelling themes not ostensibly related to education. He convincingly demonstrates that technology alone is not the answer and can, in fact, be part of the problem when not implemented well. Rather, technology must be integrated with the New [project- and inquiry-based and student-centered] Pedagogy and with effective and collaborative ways of implementing change. The synergy these three create together will transform education and lead to "twice the learning at half the price."

Middle-class manipulation in a Sussex town
By 14archaeologist
This short, plot-driven book can be read as a general firework lobbed at socially-aspirational middle-class couples in southern England, but has a hidden extra resonance: readers who know the geography and habits of Lewes, that 'nice' town near Brighton, will now tread nervously in the High St and around Pells, especially on Bonfire night...... The plot stays just on the right side of believability, and addresses murky subjects without pushing the reader over-far into gloom. This Kindle book should be issued to every commuter on the morning London train from Lewes.

Writing History in the Global Era, by Lynn Hunt

Leading historian Lynn Hunt rethinks why history matters in today’s global world and how it should be written.

George Orwell wrote that “history is written by the winners.” Even if that seems a bit too cut-and-dried, we can say that history is always written from a viewpoint but that viewpoints change, sometimes radically.

The history of workers, women, and minorities challenged the once-unquestioned dominance of the tales of great leaders and military victories. Then, cultural studies―including feminism and queer studies―brought fresh perspectives, but those too have run their course.

With globalization emerging as a major economic, cultural, and political force, Lynn Hunt examines whether it can reinvigorate the telling of history. She hopes that scholars from East and West can collaborate in new ways and write wider-ranging works.

At the same time, Hunt argues that we could better understand the effects of globalization in the past if we knew more about how individuals felt about the changes they were experiencing. She proposes a sweeping reevaluation of individuals’ active role and their place in society as the keys to understanding the way people and ideas interact. She also reveals how surprising new perspectives on society and the self―from environmental history, the history of human-animal interactions, and even neuroscience―offer promising new ways of thinking about the meaning and purpose of history in our time.

Review
No one has a better nose for historical trends than Lynn Hunt. Her short, sharp book offers an inspiring declaration of interdependence for historians―to understand the global present collaboratively, using all our tools to unscramble the entangled past. (David Armitage, author of Foundations of Modern International Thought)

With characteristic concision and lucidity, Lynn Hunt takes on the methodological dilemmas facing all historians today. How should we think of history in a postnational era? What is gained and lost by ‘going global’? What happens to individual actors and agency when history is written on a transnational scale? Writing History in the Global Era draws on a wide range of writings from the humanities and the social and biological sciences to propose a thought-provoking snapshot of where historians stand now and where they might be headed. Lively and engaging, this book will help both budding and seasoned historians understand the current state of their discipline. (Sarah Maza, author of The Myth of the French Bourgeoisie)

Hunt’s compact book should serve as the first port of call for students and general readers interested in how historians have interpreted and reinterpreted the emergence of the world around them. (Brendan Simms - Wall Street Journal)

Hunt has… the most reliable eye for new trends in the American historical profession, and what she considers important always amounts to more than the sum of her current enthusiasms… she has a preternatural sense of the new new thing being touted by historians to study old things. (Samuel Moyn - The Nation)

About the Author
Lynn Hunt is Distinguished Research Professor at UCLA, former president of the American Historical Association, and author of numerous works, including Inventing Human Rights and Telling the Truth about History. She lives in Los Angeles.

Why Read History
By Thomas H. Lynch
Writing History in the Global Era, 2014, by Lynn Hunt, Distinguished Research Professor at UCLA. This is, as she says, "… A short book about a big subject,…" (p. 1). Anyone who reads history will profit from her orientation about this field. I have read history ever since I was a young adult, embarrassed about my ignorance. At age 85 I still find it fascinating. My impression is that historians in the 21st-century are doing a much better job than in the 20th century--better intellectual quality, more thorough studies of sources, and even better notes. What I did not realize was that behind the scenes the paradigms that have shaped history writing and still do. Hunt has filled me in on this aspect of history writing.
Hunt is blunt about history writers, as well as readers: "… humans look for a logic in their stories that is related to their own goals." (p. 127). She identifies four paradigms (over-arching accounts of metanarratives of historical developments) along with goals, in the post World War II period: Marxism (eventual withering of the state) modernization (social progress) Annales school (long term social histories) and identity politics (social movements). In the period of 1960 to1990s criticism of these paradigms arose: cultural studies, post structuralism, post modernism and post colonials. In the 21st-century, globalization themes are pursued in historical narratives, especially in response to Marx and 20th century modernization aging enthusiasts. When you pick up a history study, it is well to know the sequence of events! And to check out your own goals before throwing down a volume in disgust.
Why can't history be more scientific? Hunt addresses this issue. The problem: the impossibility of separating analysis and causal explanation from narrative. We all are storytellers, and our conscious and unconscious goals may warp what we perceived and conclude. There is no escape from this. Solution: recognition the major narratives are tied to a particular moment in time. Hunt emphasizes that history has no set course from which a story, especially about the future, can be grounded. She recommends starting from a particular moment and researching the history of the past. Trends can be discovered, but they are not arrows to determine straight-way the future. And there can be various arrows discerned. "… history has no preordained end points…" (p.128).
As I read her book, philosopher Philip Kitcher's ethical-project concept came to my mind. He has concluded no external reality can be a base for what is good or bad. We have to have a conversation in our present moment and hopefully arrive at a consensus, or at least a peaceful compromise or tolerance. Kitcher is hopeful for ethical progress from our present moment and dismissive of speculative programs to future times. What can we do now to make the world a little more peaceful, rather than set a goal for world peace. Please no more wars on drugs and crime, but what can we do now to reduce drug use and crime, at least somewhat. Then things need conversation and working together, as well as historical research. First research the history of the ethic. Don't propose utopias to aim at, but rather assess the present moment for modest goals for the near future through conversation, not external guidance by experts or divinities. But first talk about how we got our present values and notions. Read some history.

From Library Journal
Disney aims for a smash hit this summer with The Lion King , the first original animated screenplay it has ever produced. This book incorporates the film's artwork and screenplay, plus a foreword by James Earl Jones (who plays the Lion King's father) and an afterword discussing the African themes and landscape that inspired the art.
Copyright 1994 Reed Business Information, Inc.

From Booklist
The resurgence in Disney animation in recent years has been accompanied by a concurrent rise in Disney merchandise, the latest example of which is this tie-in to the studio's new cartoon epic, The Lion King. The handsome coffee-table book follows the movie's story of the lion cub Simba's journey to assume the mantle of kingship by means of hundreds of beautifully reproduced production stills, sketches, animation drawings, and background paintings depicting the appealing characters and African settings. The last quarter of the volume is devoted to an afterword offering a behind-the-scenes, step-by-step account of the project from conception to screen. The studio-sanctioned text glosses over such unpleasantries as the removal of the film's original director, who had envisioned a less traditional, more Afrocentric saga. In any event, it's the bountiful gallery of artwork that's the real selling point of the book. Early in its release as of this writing, The Lion King seems to be on its way to becoming Disney's biggest-grossing release ever, so there's bound to be an eager audience for this lavish tome. Gordon Flagg

About the Author
Christopher Finch, as a young child, believed that he was "the" Christopher Robin of the wonderful stories his mother read to him at bedtime. It is only fitting that Finch adds this book to the list of more than twenty titles he has authored, including "The Art of Walt Disney" and "The Art of the Lion King."

Nice companion with lots of storyboard art
By Parka
[[VIDEOID:32640491]]The Lion King was the first movie I watched in the cinema. Although I can't remember anything about the movie today, I do remember that I liked it very much. I was 13 back then.

The Art of the Lion King is an oversized art book containing concept art, colour pencil storyboards and film stills. Some of the film stills when blown up over two pages still look fabulous. The concept art is amazing, specifically the stylized character designs and some of the background paintings.

The art is arranged according to story acts, and there are a lot of storyboards. Unfortunately, the accompanying text are only the plot lines.

Right at the end is the afterword, which is actually the production process of the movie. Here are stories on how Lion King was scripted, research done (including a trip to East Africa), things happening behind the scenes like the duties of the cleanup artists, using CAPS (computer software) to animate the film, creating special effects like rain or fire and other special effects.

It's a nice companion to the movie.

A fantastic example of concept art for anybody!
By Adele Thomas
Apart from the fact that my copy was close to pocket size, i thought that this book was fantastic. Not only does it come filled with amazing concepts, it also is accompanied with the Lion King Storyline. As an illustrator and student animator, it is a wonderful addition to my resources. The sketches through to the complete full colour images are for any Lion King fan, artists or just someone wanting a beautiful coffee table book. If your from overseas like myself and cannot get these kind of books in Australia, i reccommend Amazon and their associate stores. Buy this, its great.

Many Years From Now, Paul McCartney book
By YANNYSTU
Haven't finished reading this book but so far it's very entertaining.
I enjoy reading about famous people.
Paul really reveals a lot about himself, growing up, good times, bad times and things you'd be amazed to find out. He doesn't hold back on anything. He puts everything right out there for all to see.
I would recommend this book to readers who enjoy reading about the lives and times of paul McCartney.
I always shop Amazon to get my books and CD's because you can get some really good deals on new and used item that are in excellent condition.

Like, but I knew most of this already
By MaryAlice Bitts
I liked this book; it's enjoyable. But I already knew all of the info. Fans like me would do better with the book Fab: An Intimate Life of Paul McCartney. Very well researched and written, and it goes into more depth.

Thank you for this great book!
By Karl
Finally a book ( I know it's not new) presenting Paul's Version of what happend. The press in particular tend to use John's (Lennon) Version of events as the holy truth , but this book sets the record straight. Paul's intention is not to correct the earlier stories, rather tell his own story. Thank you Paul McCartney and Barry Miles. A great book!

This issue will be visually stunning, featuring built work and speculative projects, which highlight how contemporary practices are using devices such as spatial compositing, surface articulation and novel manipulations of materials in order to constitute spatial conditions radiating in delicate and sophisticated atmospheres. The theoretical foundations for the theme will also be established through key essays: the historic lineage of the evocation of atmosphere and moods in architecture; the more recent interest in phenomenology and perception in architecture; the interaction of the human body and atmosphere; and picturesque rendering techniques.

The Invisible String, by Patrice Karst

A steady best-seller and The Invisible String is reaching all over the World!
OVER 150,000 copies sold!
"That's impossible", said twins Jeremy & Liza after their Mom told them they're all connected by this thing called an Invisible String. "What kind of string"? They asked with a puzzled look to which Mom replied, "An Invisible String made of love." That's where the story begins. A story that teaches of the tie that really binds. The Invisible String reaches from heart to heart. Does everybody have an Invisible String? How far does it reach, anyway? Does it ever go away? Read all about it! THE INVISIBLE STRING is a very simple approach to overcoming the fear of loneliness or separation with an imaginative flair that children can easily identify with and remember. Here is a warm and delightful lesson teaching young and old that we aren't ever really alone and reminding children (and adults!) that when we are loved beyond anything we can imagine. "People who love each other are always connected by a very special String, made of love. Even though you can't see it with your eyes, you can feel it deep in your heart, and know that you are always connected to the ones you love."

Thus begins this heart-warming and reassuring story that addresses the issue of "separation anxiety" (otherwise known as the sense of existential 'aloneness') to children of all ages.

Specifically written to address children's fear of being apart from the ones they love, The Invisible String delivers a particularly compelling message in today's uncertain times that though we may be separated from the ones we care for, whether through anger, or distance or even death, love is the unending connection that binds us all, and, by extension, ultimately binds every person on the planet to everyone else. Parents and children everywhere who are looking for reassurance and reaffirmation of the transcendent power of love, to bind, connect and comfort us through those inevitable times when life challenges us!

Let's tell the whole world that we are ALL connected by Invisible Strings!

Review
The Invisible String by Patrice Karst is a heartwarming story that reassures children that even though they can't always be with a loved one, they're always in each other's hearts. Whenever a child thinks about a family member, THE INVISIBLE STRING gives a tug. This book is an excellent way to begin the conversation about death. The gentle story illustrates that we are still connected by love even after someone passes. --Parents Magazine

The Invisible String is part of my social skills/feelings book purchases. This is a story about how twins realize there is an invisible string connecting all people who love one another… you can feel it in your heart and always be connected, even from afar. Beautiful. Delicate. Perfect for: dealing with loss, moving, friendship issues, family problems, nighttime fears… Quite the special book. --The Styling Librarian

If I could only have one book to use for counseling purposes, this would be it. This book is extremely versatile. It can be used for any type of separation, loss. The premise of the book is that we are all connected by an invisible string. Even though it is invisible, you can feel it with your heart. Everyone has an invisible string, and it can reach anywhere, even heaven. The book's message is that no one is ever alone, even when their loved one is not physically present. --United Way-Life Lessons for Little Ones

THE INVISIBLE STRING teaches kids how to deal with missing a parent by understanding that they are still connected to their parent via an invisible string. While not geared solely to military families, this touching book can help young children feel connected with deployed parents or other family members that are far away. ----Military Family.Org

Separation is a serious issue, both for parents and their children. This is the main reason why The Invisible String (by Patrice Karst) has made its way to the third spot on the list of Top 10 Books for 3 year olds. It can also be a tale on how to deal with loss - specifically the death of someone a child loved, or the overall anxiety and fear that comes from the thought of being separated from a person that is an integral part of a child's life. However, this book isn't just a creative comfort for children - it's also an important tale for anyone who has ever had difficulty dealing with loss or separation.
The story begins with a mother telling her twins that an 'invisible string' connects to all the hearts of people. This string cannot be cut, torn, or broken in any way - even after death. Instead, it acts as a conductor of love between the people who care about each other. This string also cannot be seen with the eyes, but it can be felt with the heart - sending the message to readers that they are never truly alone, and will never be forgotten or abandoned by those who their invisible string is connected to.
The Invisible String is self-explanatory; it's a must-have for the bookshelves of anyone who enjoys reading a tale with a positive moral and practiced life lesson. The string can be the comfort children need to get over a divorce, a death, a loss of any kind - but it can also be the one thing that makes an adult feel better about the same situations. Instead of feeling disconnected due to travel, heartbreak, or physical loss, people who "feel" their invisible string are likely to experience a better understanding and firmer grasp on their emotions and the situation they're dealing with. -- --Best Reading for Kids

"My invisible string is really long, since MeMe and Paw are in Heaven"
By Amazon Customer
We recently had a tragedy in my family and I lost both my sister and brother-in-law in a boating accident. My great-niece (their granddaughter) lived with them and I became very concerned with how she would handle these sudden deaths. I bought this book because of the reviews and I'm SO GLAD I did!! My great-niece looked at her mom the other day and told her that her invisible string is really long because it reaches MeMe and Paw all the way in heaven. Talk about tears, but such a relief that she knows they are watching her and love her. My fear was that she would think they just left.

Thank you for such a phenomenal book that was interpreted correctly by my smart, beautiful 6 year old great-niece

the story lends itself to deeper conversations about love and interconnectedness
By Laura K.
I discovered this book, The Invisible String, when my toddler started having separation anxiety. This book is deeply meaningful and has been an invaluable tool in our home!

As a mother of two young children, I am always looking for books that have relatable characters, carry a strong message and show healthy ways to process feelings. The Invisible String does all of that and more. My three-year-old son loves reading about Liza and Jeremy. He asks me lots of questions about the twins and is curious about each page of the book. Additionally, the story lends itself to deeper conversations about love and interconnectedness. I feel so fortunate to have this book as an anchor for our conversations.

After reading this book, my son and I started wearing an “invisible string” on our wrists, which my son pulls on when he misses me. He has been wearing it for over a year now and it is such a comfort to him. I really recommend this book!
