Ultra-realism techniques and Old-Masters ideas in this book

If you love colored pencils, a relatively new art medium, and you like realism, especially still lifes in the style of the Old Masters, this book is definitely for you. Yes, that is a painting on the cover of the book, not a photo! Incredible, isn't it?

Ms. Steinberg's technique is stunning. She layers and burnishes the pigments of these waxy pencils until the result is a deep, dark, brilliant work with incredible depth and sparkle. Many times during the pages of demonstrations, I was thinking "I'd have stopped THERE" when the painting (drawing) was half-done, and the result would have been just fine, but Steinberg continues adding layers until the painting glows in great contrast. She shares these techniques with many photos of work in progress. There are also pages of color swatches of pencils, with the color listing for the most popular American brand used.

Among the many resources in the book are line drawings of the demonstration paintings, so the student can practice the color layering technique without first worrying about draughtsmanship. In addition, the drawings show the method Steinberg uses to achieve ultra-realism (you can see in the line drawing of the marbles featured on the cover, for example, that each reflection and shadow inside the marble is delineated carefully.)

Steinberg counsels the artist to continue and not worry about the intermediate steps of the painting because the burnishing step alters the final result. Burnishing is done with a colorless pencil, which has a waxy component that blends and melts the layers to achieve a smoother, darker result and blended highlights. She also gives advice on handling the boring task of filling in a dark background (go sector by sector and just concentrate on the bit at hand, don't look at the whole expanse and get discouraged.)

If you buy just one colored pencil tutorial book, this could be the one. My only complaint is that there are so many photos (ordinarily a good thing) that some of them are rather small so they can be fit into the available space. These photos really need to be larger to see the detail and technique. I would have included larger photos, more pages and just charged more for the book, because it really is a masterpiece.

One of the Best Colored Pencil Books I've seen, if not THE BEST!

I'm sure there are one or two books on Colored Pencils that have been published in the last 15 years that I don't own. However, I have only been Colored Pencil painting for about 3 years. It's difficult for me to push aside all of those books and to say this is the best I've seen, but I have! There are a few that have been in my Top 5 for awhile. Ann Kullberg's Colored Pencil Portraits Step by Step and Capturing Soft Realism in Colored Pencil are the #1 reason why I picked up a colored pencil. Cecile Baird Painting Light With Colored Pencil has been at the #1 spot for me because of her use of burnishing to make a colored pencil painting look super-realistic. Masterful Color bumped itself into the #1 spot within a few days. Ms. Steinberg's explanation of color theory and in particular the Grisaille (pronounced: greez-eye) Method was in depth but easy to understand. Her "Photography 101" section was written in a way so I finally understand aperture and exposure speed, and it took 5 sentences, which was worth the price of the book right there.

I pre-ordered this book on August 3, 2007, and I finally got it about 2 weeks ago. The book now looks more used than many of the books that take up so much room in my den.

I have read just through to the beginning of Chapter 4, but looking through the rest of the book has given me the impetuous to go forth and hope that I can become a fraction of the artist that Arlene Steinberg is. I waited 7 months for this book, and it was worth every minute that I waited.

Masterful Color Says It All

Other reviewers have thoroughly covered the author's inclusion of every aspect of colored pencil in this book. They are right on the money. The reason I bought this book, however, and the reason I like it, is stated in the title. 'Masterful Color.' That truly says it all.

This book is filled with color, glorious color! Color and value, the color wheel, training your eyes to see color, and even some history behind the use of color. The demos sparkle with tints and shades, and the references to the Old Masters, and their use of color and technique, are particularly interesting and useful, especially if one wants to paint like an Old Master someday. And that antique look appears to be coming back into fashion.

The usage and properties of color build, in this book, from the ground up. I love to underpaint, but I am never sure which color to use under what hue. On page 47, there is an extremely handy tool...a chart illustrating color combinations that will make your paintings shine! This color chart must have taken days of work and years of experience to develop. Possession of this chart alone is worth the price of the book.

I buy many colored pencil books, but today's market is becoming so saturated, it is difficult to find something new in every book that comes out. This book contains new and different material, and it is a must for the colored pencil lover's library.

Which card does Pone lead, the six or the ten? The correct response is the six, but why? Because if pone leads the ten, the dealer can play a six and since pone has only a six remaining, dealer could score a triple for a seven point pegging play if dealer has a third six. But, if pone leads the six then the dealer can only pair the six and inasmuch as the pone's remaining ten card will take the running count to 22, that ten card cannot be paired. Thus, the dealer's pegging potential has been held in check. It is a form of damage control.

An Easy Excellent!

I played cribbage many years ago and finally met up with someone who missed the game as well. Although we were a little rusty we started playing once a week and have introduced the game to a few others.
The book is well written and EASY to understand. It lays the game out in a simple organized fashion, explains basic scoring a novice would understand and addresses strategy and play for the more advanced players. Something for everyone at every level of play. I did not "get" the "confusing" English others had mentioned. It seemed pretty straight forward to me.

Great book on cribbage. The strategy offered by J. T. Best is understandable,clear and concise for my little brain and I have begun besting the computer playing the medium challenge. I just began playing the game 2 months ago but have wanted to for years. I want to become a much better player so I feel that a book for the beginner to grandmaster should be the very BOOK I need. I also have the book by Frank and Simon Butler (How to Play and Win) so I consider myself armed for bear. As I stated in my assessment of "The Butlers" book all I need now is to have a person to talk back to so that I might become better at pegging with no Muffins. Thank you J. T. Best.

Well worth the time

Not really for beginners, this book is worth the time and effort for the novice who wants to learn to play cribbage well. While it does explain the basics of the game, it really become valuble for the player who can already count and peg points. Be prepared to do some studying if you want to get the most from this short book.

Fun & Instructive

One of the most enjoyable game collections I have ever read. I think it is probably more deserving of 4.5 stars but Amazon dosen't allow that. These games are not only fun to play over but Mr. Heisman's insightful comments are very instructive, not to mention that some of them hit uncomfortably close to home for a class player like myself.

I enjoyed Dan's coverage of less-than-optimal openings like the so-called "High School" version of the Sicilian Defense (1.e4 c5 2. Bc4) which at my level (1500-1600), I see constantly. Some might find it annoying but I liked his constant reminders to "try to take all your time in every game" & "If you see a good move, dont play it immediately, look for a better one" etc.... Some people might find this type of repeated advice to be demeaning but it is exactly the kind of thing I struggle with when playing serious chess.

Dan did a very good job of explaining why the players made their mistakes (playing to fast, not taking into account all their opponent's replys, etc...). He also used a good mixture of prose and analysis when exploring alternate variations (although I would have like to have seen a few less "houdini prefers").

I believe it is very important for people to pick out chess books that are neither too advanced or too simplistic for their skill level. Saying that, I would highly recommend this book for anyone in the 1000 to 1800 ratings range. I believe they would get much more out of it than buying another opening book or trying to digest the latest Kasparov tome aimed at Master's and above.

Another excellent book from NM Dan Heisman

There are a few chess authors whose books I will buy no questions asked. National Master Dan Heisman is one of those authors. Soltis, Nunn and Silman are the others for those curious. I've actually had the privilege of taking a few lessons from Dan Heisman, but unfortunately had to stop due to scheduling issues on my end. Being a graduate student at UNLV does not leave too much time for chess unfortunately. However, I hope to start up my lessons again over winter break as my finals just ended. Total tangent, but if you are serious about improving your chess I cannot recommend lessons highly enough. I had a few light bulbs go off during my lessons with Dan Heisman that have helped me tremendously, particularly in the area of analysis.

Okay, how about the book? As mentioned earlier, with my finals over I dove straight in to not only my regular chess studying (tactics, going over annotated master games, and playing slow games), but also to this book. The book is a collection of amateur games with fantastic annotations by Heisman. Each game is given dense annotation and grouped by general theme. Some are under the theme of moving too fast, while others are examples of the player(s) moving too slow. The thing that makes this book a must buy, especially if you are serious about improving your chess, is all the pearls of wisdom Heisman sprinkles in during each game. Advice on general principles, advice on analysis, advice on evaluation, advice on openings, advice on pretty much every aspect of chess. The other great thing about the book is the games are highly entertaining. Going over well-annotated Grandmaster games is one of the best thing you can do for your chess, but you hardly ever see a major blunder in those games (Anand in the recent London Chess Classic notwithstanding). Amateur games are exciting because there are often wild swings in the game and the winning side changes frequently. It is the chess us mere mortals play and highly educational in its own way, especially because these players make the same mistakes we do. Another great thing about Heisman's writing is the humor he adds to the annotations. In one of the early games he mentions that on a particular move a player who was playing lightning fast (the game was time stamped) actually took a couple of minutes for a move because he probably got a drink of water and/or a snack. Let's be honest, chess books can be dry affairs so this type of humor is a great addition.

Whether you are an improving player or simply play chess for fun, this book is a must buy.

I Don't Want You to Buy This Book (I Won't Beat You as Easily!)

Proviso: I am an amateur chess enthusiast and intermediate level player who knows Coach Heisman personally from being a sometime member of his local chess club. I have benefited greatly from the group instruction he provides at the club, and on various online sources. I am not in any way a close friend of Heisman's and feel that I am an objective commentator on the value he brings to chess students. I am an on-and-off member of the USCF but I mostly play chess on the 'net these days.

So why don't I want you to buy this book? First who are "you"? If you are an intermediate or advancing beginner chess player, then I'm talking to you. You are the person I wind up playing against in an over the board tournament game (rare for me these days) or on a live chess game on the internet (I highly recommend Chess.com for live, real-time chess play - I'm not affiliated with them, just a member). You have probably made many of the errors and inaccuracies so instructively laid out for the reader in Heisman's newest book. In fact, you'll probably make many of these errors in your games against me (I see them all the time). When you make these errors, I tend to win more games (winning makes me happy). And you may keep on making these errors unless you pay attention to the lessons provided here by Coach Heisman.

What kind of things will you learn by reading this book and playing through the games, either in your head and using the diagrams (as I do), or over a study board? You'll learn about time management from someone who understands the trouble that players get into either from moving too slowly or too quickly. You'll learn about how to handle many common opening patterns and sequences that arise in less-than-grandmasterly games. You'll learn some helpful endgame themes. You'll learn a variety of instructive rules of thumb that can get you through your games with more wins than losses. This is decades of chess wisdom distilled at precisely the correct concentration for the chess amateur who wants to improve his game. Do you know what a "two way bishop" is? Do you know what the correct relative values of the pieces are in various circumstances, and how that should influence the way you trade pieces in those circumstances? Do you know what a counting error is? Do you know what a quiescence error is? Do you know the difference between Hope Chess and Real Chess? Can you judge when it's worth investing a lot of time and thought in a move, and when it's not? Do you know when it makes sense to trade rooks in an endgame? You will learn about all of these things and many more if you read and study this book. And if you pay attention to what you read, I won't beat you as often.

Heisman makes use of computer analysis to improve and perfect his analysis of the games in this book. Some people don't like that, saying "well, I could use a computer too - who needs this?" Those people are foolish and they miss the point. When you combine computer analysis with the kind of deep chess insight and wisdom proffered by Coach Heisman, you get a very effective combination - and with none of the annoying and dangerous errors that used to creep into books even written by grandmasters (and world champions) before the age of wide-spread computer analysis.

Heisman's chess wisdom has been captured in many articles on the 'net, and he gives zillions of links to these helpful articles in the book. He also posts instructive videos and blogs on the ICC and on Chess.com. But if you are a chess amateur and you want a book of games you can play through and learn dozens of important lessons and heuristics to improve your play, this book will be worth its price. You are not a master, and like most of us probably never will be, so this book represents a guide to the kind of games you'll most often find yourself in in real life.

I've said many complementary things about this book. So why don't I give it five stars? Well, I am a bit frugal with my praise. I don't like to gush all over everything I like. This is a great little chess book. Is it destined to be a classic for the ages as Bronstein's book on Zurich 1953 has become? No. Also I would say that it could benefit from more diagrams. How expensive is it to insert diagrams into books these days? I'd like to have one at every single point of interest in the game - but mainly because I tend to read chess books away from a chess board. But for an amateur player who wants to improve his game, it well worth investing the money to buy, and the time to read, this very instructive, humorous, and entertaining book. Plus, if I gave it 5 stars, then there'd be an even greater chance you'd buy it and again - I don't want you to do that. ;-)

It's tough to be devout and kitschy at the same time, but Colleen McDannell strikes that delicate balance with admirable poise in Material Christianity: Religion and Popular Culture in America. Her book is an argument that "American Christians ... want to see, hear, and touch God. It is not enough for Christians to go to church, lead a righteous life, and hope for an eventual place in heaven." This argument is amply defended by smart essays about family Bibles, gravestone design, and Lourdes Water, as well as hundreds of illustrations of vestments, churches, portraits of Jesus, rapture T-shirts, and backyard statues of Our Lady. Where Material Christianity gets really interesting, however, is in its assertion that "Christian material culture does not simply reflect an existing reality. Experiencing the physical dimension of religion helps bring about religious values, norms, behaviors, and attitudes." For example, the warmth and intimacy of Warner Sallman's painting "Head of Christ," which hung in almost every Protestant Sunday School classroom in America until the 1960s, was probably every bit as influential as any given phrase from the Sermon on the Mount in determining the personal nature of Protestants' relationships with Jesus. About the Author

John Pinel, the author of Biopsychology , obtained his Ph.D. from McGill University in Montreal and worked briefly at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, before taking a faculty position at the University of British Columbia, where he is currently Professor Emeritus. Professor Pinel is an award-winning teacher and the author of over 200 scientific papers. However, he feels that Biopsychology is his major career-related accomplishment. “It ties together everything I love about my job; students, teaching, writing, and research.”

 

Pinel attributes much of his success to his wife Maggie who is an artist and professional designer. Over the years, they have collaborated on many projects, and the quality of Biopsychology’s illustrations is largely attributable to her skill and effort.

It's a wild ride!

The first two words that come to mind are "fascinating" and "challenging," in that order. You'll feel like a cognitive neuroscientist by the time you're done. I don't think my amygdala and prefrontal cortex will ever be the same, not to mention my hippocampus. Sometimes I think I'm having a "spliit-brain" (chapter 16) experience, and my corpus callosum (the largest cerebral commissure) hasn't even been severed! Get ready to be "wowed" by a part of the brain thought to 'generate the neural representation of thought' (p. 430), and brush up on your biochemistry. I virtually knew little or nothing about these and other subjects of the book, but was drawn in by the stunning study of the brain. Bottom line, the whole experience of reading and studying this book is worth every neuron spent on doing so. It's a wild ride!

Purchase this edition instead of the 8th edition to save $$$

I used this textbook for my Brain and Behavior / Neurobiology class instead of the 8th edition without any issues. The material was practically the same as the new edition- just a couple of test questions that I could not answer in MyPsych Lab. Recommend purchasing this edition for students looking to save a buck!

The writing style is engaging and I particularly enjoyed the author's personal anecdotes. The chapters are written in a straight forward format with clear and concise explanations- except for the chapter on visual systems. The visual systems chapter was overwhelming, wordy, and difficult to understand.

Grade in class: 95 = A

He critically examines all objections raised by opponents, and concludes that while private prisons face many potential problems, they do so primarily because they are prisons, not because they are private. Historically, the record of private ownership and operation of corrections facilities has been bleak--ridden with political corruption, physical abuse of prisoners, and the single-minded pursuit of profits. This study demonstrates that this need not be the case. Critiquing the tendency to contrast private prisons with a hypothetical ideal, Logan instead compares them with existing public institutions, arguing that the potential problems attributed to private prisons are experienced by their public counterparts. The work examines ten sets of issues, including the propriety, cost, security, and quantity of prisons, to set out a strong case for the viability of proprietary prisons.
