A Book on the Art of Looking Good Naked!

For those of us who just want to look good and build the superhero/Spartan/gladiator physique, this book is a Godsend. Most exercise books have too many exercises to choose from, which is very confusing to those of us who are beginners. This book sifts through the thousands of exercises that are out there and showcases only the ones that build muscle.

Some of the exercises build up muscle all over your body, while others build up specific muscles, what the author calls "pivot points." The author explains pivot points as muscles located in strategic spots on the body that, when developed, give you the classical V-taper. So not only does the book showcase muscle building exercises, but it also explains why you would develop certain muscle groups and how to target them for aesthetics.

Some of the other things I learned from this book:

-How to create high muscular tension throughout the entire range of motion
-How to group exercises together to hit a single body part and make it grow (this gave me awesome pumps in the gym BTW)
-What reps each muscle group responds to (this part was educational, since I've never seen this information anywhere else)

This is an awesome book for both the beginner and the advanced lifter who lifts solely for looks. There is a lot of training information in it, so the book may be a little overwhelming for the beginner. But I found that I could easily apply the exercises and training techniques in the gym.

His best book yet!

I have every one of this guy's books, and I can say that this is definitely his best one. What marks this book different from his previous books is that this volume has numerous exercise photos, so you're shown how to do these exercises. If you're interested not just in building muscle, but building a physique similar to that of a gymnast's (wide shoulders, lean muscular arms, ripped abs) then this book is a must have. The author showcases a wide variety of exercises that build muscle from a variety of angles. I learned quite a few new exercises which I had never seen before. I tried some of these exercises in the gym, and they definitely gave me an incredible pump.

The author also introduces some interesting training concepts in this book. He shows you how to pair up and group exercises together so that you can extend the tension on a muscle so that it grows. He also talks about a concept called pivot point training, and shows you a diagram of muscles to target that will give you the muscular V-taper look. The author also lays out the best rep ranges for each muscle group, as each muscle is made up of different fiber types.

A great book for the exercise enthusiast who wants that extra edge.

A must have for the body-builder at any level.

I was excited to hear about this book from the author's website so I ordered it and was not disappointed when it arrived. The contents are laid out in a straight-forward manner with easy-to-read charts and programs. Beginning with a brief, but all-important note on determining your goals - do you want to build bulk, symmetry, definition? - followed by chapters on the importance of tension in building muscle fibers, and a very informative chapter on the types of muscle-fibers found in each body-part, and the most effective weight/rep ratio for each. There are also some extremely important chapters on how to utilize your exercise regime in order to get maximum, extended tension from each exercise. These informative chapters suggest the most effective weight/speed/rep/set/ ratio that may be required for optimum muscle building.

In the main body of the book each body-part is discussed in detail - each body-part being given its own chapter. Each recommended exercise is accompanied by illustrations and a detailed written description of the correct form to use. Additionally, each chapter provides a detailed workout chart that recommends a specialization regime for each body-part.

An altogether highly informative work that is perfect for home weight-trainers like myself, and gym trainers alike. The high-tension information, the targeted workout regimes, as well as the "6 factors program" discussed at the end of the book, have all helped to change the way I work out for the better, and I feel as though I am able to get more out of each rep/set/exercise than I was before.

An excellent work and a must-have for anyone serious about building muscle.

Would give it 3 1/2 stars if rating system was set up to allow it.

So read the 3 as 3 1/2. Would give it four if it gave slightly more in-depth coverage of the field of study it has become a classic text for students of Ecology and Evolutionary Biology. Well written and easy to read. Could even be a 5 star if written with just a little more spark and depth of coverage as earlier stated. I recommend it, but don't expect it to be another On The Origin of Species, or Silent Spring. Still, a very valuable contribution to the field when first published and remains so in it's 6th edition.

A good alternative to larger Ecology texts

I used the earlier edition of this book twice for an ecology course that I teach, and my students appreciated the length, price, readability, and content. The rating that I give the book (four stars) is mostly based on their satisfaction. This updated version is very similar to the fifth edition, but has some nice additions, such as a chapter on Phylogeny that mentions Felsenstein's independent contrasts methods. If you are interested in reviewing this book as a possible book for your course, I would first read this brief chapter on phylogeny (16) to get a feel for the brevity of all the topics in ecology that are covered. Because many details are left out (as are many important references), this book cannot be used without supplemental literature. I usually require readings of at least 5 additional papers per chapter in this book. In fact, without supplemental readings and additional material presented in lecture, I would probably only grant two stars to this book. Strengths of the book include: very easy to read, excellent figures, adequate treatment of mathematical models, logical organization, and some nice examples from the literature.

A must for the Concept Art Junkie

If your a huge fan of the game and want a glimpse into the design process, this is the book for you. The printing is high quality, and I find myself opening it to flip through the pages every-time I walk by it. That being said I have a few minor quips with it, But first the good.

As mentioned the printing is of the utmost quality. No blemishes, colors are rich and detailed; the matte front and back cover practically glows. The book has one little blurb in the font about the art and process, but the rest of it is just pictures with a few in-game info blurbs here and there. The pages contain a mixture of sketches, full color concept art, final drafts and stunning clay-model renders; including things that didn't make it into the final game. This also includes items and armors from the multiplayer as well. It's split into five sections: demons, environments, characters, weapons, and props. Even minor things like power-ups and special effects get featured as well.

While there are a lot of pros, I have a few minor quips with the book. One of the monsters I was hoping to see the art process for was the Imp, since it received a big visual overall from the previous games. However, there is only one full page for the imp which consists of just one large full color concept piece that didn't make it into the game. The same treatment happened with the Hell-knight were it was only given one full page, which was a clay model render; though it was a really nice shot. It seems some of the monster and character pages received more dedication to in the book than others. While I understand this was probably done to keep the book from weighing a ton, it would've been nice to see a more complete overview of each. Also in the environments section a few pictures that received a full-page spread looked either a little blurry or had been compressed.

Overall though I love the book and the cons of it are just personal gripes that shouldn't stop someone interested in the art process to buy it. It's sure to be a nice addition for anyone's art book collection or DOOM collection.

Cons:
Some monsters and characters received more page art than others.
Lack of artist blurbs about the process.
A few artworks given full-page spread looked a little blurry or compressed.

This is a book filled with incredible production value, beautiful backdrops, sculptures and production art that make you want to stare at the book cover to cover over and over. If you're an art lover, if you collect these types of books, if you're just curious about what this new Doom game is you are likely to love this beautiful hardbound book.

Like many people I was surprised by just how good Doom was. I expected to have fun with it, but I had no idea it would be one of the best games I had played so far that year. Brutal, chaotic, fast-paced, there are just so many adjectives you can attach to the game. The art book gives you a pretty good look into the development of the game. Concept art and detailed in game renders of environments, enemies, weapons, and props. The best chapter is the one highlighting the demons. The enemies are the stars of the game, and here you get to see various conceptual iterations of them as well as the finished products.

THE LAST DANCE? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!

This latest release from the golden pen of Australian Fiction is about a young lady (Stella Myles), who is down on her luck in more ways than one. The book opens with a funeral, and by the end of chapter two we know her story, her family and her background. You may just find yourself completely in love with the brave young woman. The events transcribed in this chapter may well shock you, and there is no doubt the rising young starlet has had a bad life, but with the Gods of Fate shining a little ray of sunshine onto the overcast day Ms Myles calls her life, the reader may well feel justified in thinking some aspects are soon to improve. And they are. She is offered a job as a Governess to a wealthy family in Sussex, England, but as sure as day follows night, we learn that nothing is what it seems and her life is about to change in ways she (and the reader) have not even dreamed of.

The writing is fast and fluid, and features chapter ending hooks which are guaranteed to make the reader not want to put the story down. Marathon reading sessions are almost guaranteed, but (obviously) these are not recommended if you are experiencing this fine tome on the daily commute to, and from, work. The chapter lengths, as Walt Disney would say, are “just right” - that is, not too long, and not too short. But packed full of just the right level of information, emotion, and as I have just said, cliff hanger endings that maximises readers’ enjoyment levels.

It turns out that Stella and her new employers are soon (ish) off to Morocco and surrounds, and with personality clashes, love affairs and less than wholesome character motivations, things couldn’t get any worse for our heroine.

But they do.

I won’t reveal here what happens (it’s not my place) but rest assured that your heart rate will rise just as surely and just as swiftly as the action does in the book.

This is yet another strong release from this world class writer. I hereby award THE LAST DANCE a very encouraging four stars. Keep watching this space for updates as I progress through the story. I would not be surprised, given the heritage and talents of this authoress, if I end up giving it full marks.

An intriguing story of family secrets and deception

This is an enjoyable and intriguing story by talented author Australian author Fiona McIntosh set in 1930's England. Stella, an impoverished but well educated young woman takes a job as a French/Piano governess/tutor to support her much younger brother and sister.

It all starts with a chance meeting with an unusual man at a Piccadilly ballroom who orchestrates a job with the wealthy but strange Ainsworth family at their huge home in Sussex. While Douglas Ainsworth welcomes her, his wife and teenage daughter don't want her help. Slowly Stella learns something about the family secrets and more about the world of the mysterious Douglas.

Things come to a head when Douglas decides to take his whole family and Stella on a cruise calling at North Africa, Egypt and the Holy Land leading to two unexpected endings.

Both Suncoast and Mrs Suncoast read and enjoyed this book. Mrs Suncoast read and enjoyed Fiona McIntosh's previous book Nightingaleand considered that this one is as good if not better. Mrs Suncoast gave this book 5 stars, Suncoast gave it 4.5 stars as it is not his normal genre.

Older work, but compatible still .. missing the CD, waiting for the CD

The book is for an older version of 3DSMax, but it is nice (for a newbie). However, it does depend upon the CD .. and in this case the CD has not yet shipped, as the envelope for it in the book was empty.

I am awaiting the vendor's choice of delivery; download would be fine. I certainly hope they can locate the information, as the lessons in the book all hinge on having the files from the CD!

Excellent book on special effects

This is an excellent book for learning special effects. Don't bother buying Max 3 Effects because this book has WAY more effects, better quality and better content-range of effects, it's way better value for your money, and it's entirely applicable to the new versions of Max, not too much has changed.
It tells you how to make cool water effects, build land geometry, do space effects, some cool weather effects, and more. If you just want to make terrain and water this book will be a great help. Or if you want to make a space scene this book has some great help in that area too to easily make starfields, planets, etc.
The quality here of what you can make (for the most part) is completely professional looking. It's full color all the way through as well which is a bonus for the price of the book. I've been into computer graphics since I was a kid, and although I'm just starting to properly learn Max now after using it for over a year, this book is a great help to get some cool effects easily.
You'll want to have a basic knowledge of the Max interface, because the book is very succinct. Also just by reading it and playing with Max you'll learn new things about the Material Editor and other areas that will help you overall doing 3d Animation.

Very useful book

I really find this book is a lot of fun. Not every effect is perfect, however, they don't need to be. I almost never use the effect the way they are defined in this book, but the great thing about this book is it gives you many starting ideas, from which you can tweak and change to come up with your own brilliant effects. If you have no imagination and just want to copy effects, then maybe this book isn't for you. If however you love to explore and experiment, seeking new and dazzling artistic effects, but would like a few clues how to get started, then this is a great place to begin. Let's face it, Max is huge and complex and there is a dizzying array of choices. I find it really useful to see how Carbonaro does it, then take his ideas and add my own. This book is for the artists, not the technicians.

This was a good one. Young girls should read this. It would've be great if there was a wise one for Nat to speak to. She was literally treated like a live doormat or like carp under Julius' shoes. I can't believe the amount of women this dude sleep with. It was disgusting. I know he's young, but like wow. He was like 24 hour 7-11. Natalia was young, naive and dumb. Of course it didn't help that her mom had her at 15. What could she teach her when she was a young girl herself with adults in her life. It's like a cycle you see today. There was enough drama and no need for the drug stuff or 11 karat rings and expensive shopping. It would be nice to just show struggling teens with no guidance trying to mature in today's society. That's enough drama. I like this book because it shows the naive thoughts of young girl falling in love for the first time and allowing someone to treat like she not worth anything. From the cheating to the abuse, she feels like this guy is her only salvation. It also shows a young man that wants to do right by his girl, but can't because he's young as well with no parents. He's been his own since early teens and been around nasty girls that only want him for financial reasons and status as his girl because he's known drug dealer. Julius is hurting on the inside and only person that cares is Nat. She doesn't care about the money and is so naive that she probably doesn't know about the drugs. I know she only 17, but she needs to grow up and get a backbone. She needs to fight for herself. Don't let Julius or anyone walk over her like that. It saddened me how she thought so low of herself and let Julius abuse her and cheat like that. Julius really needs a taste of his own medicine. He treats women like crap and doesn't deserve Nat. I hope she matured in part 2 which I'm about to read.

I was really into this book like emotionally drawn in it. I was mad when they gave a sneak of kiesha and trigga lol. Can't wait for part 2! Nat made me mad cause she should've been checked Julius and quit leading Frank on but I recommend if you looking a good read. Good Job!

All I can say is Julius is a male wh??e and he's crazy. He always want things to go his way.and Natalie is so naive she can't even think straight, I blame her mom because she didn't show her what love suppose to look like. I hope someone come to her rescue before it's to late. I think all these side chicks have some sort of low self esteem because they keep running up behind this man that don't care about them and he tells them in their faces what's it all about.SMH
