Comprehensive and cogent, yet lay accessible

Put simply, Hoekema's book is simply a classic. Whether one agrees with him or not, one cannot find a better introduction to eschatology available from an amillennial perspective. There are a few unique contributions that this book contains:
(1) It shows how one can and should apply the already/not yet tension in eschatology. One cannot find this emphasis in many lay accessible books.
(2) It is not sensationalistic. While passionate about the things to come, he is careful not to fall prey to making prognostications.
(3) It does a good job of surveying the various millennial (and other eschatological) options in Christianity today without being overly simplistic and/or misrepresenting another position other than his own. This being so, he fairly and irenically shows why he holds his position.
(4) It represents a particular brand of amillennialism that understands the earthly prophecies of the OT not to refer to spiritual fulfillment in the church today (as many amills do), but in the new heavens and the new earth. In fact, his emphasis on the new earth in his book is surprisingly insightful.
(5) It also gives a very nice appendix which surveys the more recent developments in eschatological discussion (e.g., Cullman, Moltmann, Bultmann, Schweitzer, et al).
I do not agree with Hoekema on many issues. For instance, I am a partial preterist, and so I see a few passages in the past that he sees as still future. Also, I am a postmillennialist, thus seeing a more prosperous future for the pre-Advent church. Despite these differences, however, I gained a tremendous amount from reading Hoekema's book -- insights which I hope to help my own eschatological understanding to become more fully biblical. Let's all face it -- none of us probably has all our eschatology completely right. We need each other to appreciate all the variations and viewpoints the bible offers (see Poythress' "Symphonic Theology" for more on that subject).
In conclusion...
Whoever you are and whatever position you hold, it is doubtful that you can NOT benefit tremendously from a good reading of this book. If anything, it may just correct a misunderstanding of the amillennial position that many have today.

Excellent presentation of Christian eschatology (Last Times)

Hoekema delivers a very comprehensive, articulate, and biblical presentation. For Christians who are familiar with the different views of the millenium, his view is one of Amillenialism. Even if one does not agree with his disposition one will agree that his is well stated and honestly biblical in approach (whether completely accurate or not only God can reveal...and He will). Using his model of "already/not yet" for the Kingdom of God, the reader is in for an illuminating ride through the Scriptures in an attempt to come to a well-balanced eschatology. For anyone interested in Christianity of the Reformed ilk this is a classic work on the issue. Consistent, readable, and incredibly insightful, "The Bible and the Future" will instruct and inspire all Christians and offer hope and grace to those who aren't....yet.

Outstanding

This is the best book on eschatology I have ever read. I keep turning to it again and again. It contains in-depth exegesis of most of the major passages. There are places where Hoekema seems to be too much of a slave to the Dutch Reformed tradition (such as his interpretation of Romans 11:26), but overall his exegesis is very sober and balanced. The writing is excellent and very easy to read. Hoekema interacts with other positions in a very fair and irenic manner. Even if you aren't amillenial, you need to read this book.

About the Author
Robert Lanza, M.D. is currently Chief Scientific Officer at Advanced Cell Technology, and Adjunct Professor of Surgical Sciences at Wake Forest University School of Medicine. He has several hundred scientific publications and patents, and over 30 books, including Principles of Tissue Engineering (1st through 4th Editions), Methods of Tissue Engineering, Principles of Cloning (1st and 2nd Editions), Essentials of Stem Cell Biology (1st and 2nd Editions), XENO, Yearbook of Cell & Tissue Transplantation, One World: The Health & Survival of the Human Species in the 21st Century (as editor, with forewords by C. Everett Koop and former President Jimmy Carter), and Medical Science & the Advancement of World Health. Dr. Lanza received his B.A. and M.D. degrees from the University of Pennsylvania, where he was both a University Scholar and Benjamin Franklin Scholar. He is a former Fulbright Scholar, and studied as a student in the laboratory of Richard Hynes (MIT), Jonas Salk (The Salk Institute), and Nobel laureates Gerald Edelman (Rockefeller University) and Rodney Porter (Oxford University). He also worked closely (and coauthored a series of papers) with the late Harvard psychologist B.F. Skinner and heart transplant pioneer Christiaan Barnard. Dr. Lanza's current area of research focuses on the use of stem cells in regenerative medicine.

Robert Langer received honorary doctorates from the ETH (Switzerland) in 1996 and the Technion (Israel) in 1997. Dr. Langer is the Kenneth J. Germeshausen Professor of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering at MIT. He received a Bachelor’s Degree from Cornell University in 1970 and a Sc.D. from MIT in 1974, both in chemical engineering. Dr. Langer has written 590 articles, 400 abstracts, 350 patents, and has edited 12 books.Dr. Langer has received over 70 major awards, including the Gairdner Foundation International Award, the Lemelson-MIT prize, the American Chemical Society (ACS) Polymer Chemistry and Applied Polymer Science Awards, Creative Polymer Chemistry Award (ACS, Polymer Division), the Pearlman Memorial Lectureship Award (ACD, Biochemical Technology Division), and the A.I.Ch.E’s Walker, Professional Progress, Bioengineering, and Stine Materials Science and Engineering Awards. In 1989, Dr. Langer was elected to the Institute of Medicine and the National Academy of Sciences, and in 1992 he was elected to both the National Academy of Engineering and to the National Academy of Sciences. He is the only active member of all 3 United States National Academies.

Dr. Joseph P. Vacanti received his M.D. degree from the university of Nebraska in 1974. He received his training in general surgery at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1974 through 1981 and in pediatric surgery at The Children’s Hospital, Boston from 1981 through 1983. He then received clinical training in transplantation from the University of Pittsburgh. He spent two years in the laboratories of Dr. M. Judah Folkman working in the filed on angiogenesis from 1977 through 1979. Upon completion of his training, Dr. Vacanti joined the staff in surgery at children’s Hospital in Boston and began clinical programs in pediatric liver transplantation and extracorporeal membrane oxygenation. In the laboratory, he continued studies in and began work in the filed of tissue engineering in 1985. Dr. Vacanti is now John Homans Professor of Surgery at Harvard Medical School, Visiting surgeon at Massachusetts General Hospital, director of the Wellman 6 Surgical laboratories, director of the Laboratory of Tissue Engineering and Organ Fabrication and Director of Pediatric Transplantation at Massachusetts General Hospital, Boston. He has authored more than 120 original reports, 30 book chapters, and 197 abstracts. He has more than 25 patents or patents pending in the United States, Europe, and Japan.

This text is so well written and organized that it virtually defines the frontiers of the life sciences for the next 100 years, an era that promises to deliver to mankind what our fellow humans only dreamed about for millennia. Truly this text is a milestone in what others have termed "The Century of the Biologist". As a craniofacial and dentoalveolar applied biologist I have shared the information in this book with my patients who not only marvel at the phenomenal explosion of data but also the practial applications that it explains and justifies. If you consider yourself an intellectual clinician, a dedicated educator of life science( at any pedagogical level) or commited basic scientists this text is the kind of absolutely requied reading you would voluntarily purchase for the thrill of free inquiry that feeds the disquiet spirits of the insatiably curious mind.

Much room for improvement

I noticed that there will be a new edition of this text - I hope the authors took the criticisms of the old edition to heart. After using this book for a child development course, I was horrified to see how indeed very racist some parts of this book are. And it's the kind of new-age, oblivious breed of racism that is ironically based in a compulsion to be "diverse" and politically correct.
The depiction of the black family was too stereotypical - and thus offensive - for words. It almost became a satire of middle-class liberal racism, because the story of "Malcolm and Momma Jo" is obviously the way that the authors perceive the lifestyle of a typical African American family. Sroufe, et al should be ashamed of themselves.
These comments are meant to be constructive. I'm actually passionate about my psychology studies, have a 4.0 and hope to be a psychiatrist. I feel incredibly disappointed, shortchanged and offended to have had this book as our required text.

Admittedly, I've just started reading this book, it was assigned for a class. But it is multi-culturalism gone bad. I tend to believe that including a cross section of people from all cultures is a good idea, but not if done like this. It is so prejudicial, it hurts to read. The authors' racism just shines through for the first 150 pages, and I doubt it will get better as I continue to read. And they're lack of self awareness to their prejudice is just scary. This book should not be used as an educational tool. It shouldn't be used at all without major revising. Don't buy it. Don't assign it. Don't give them any money - this type of writing should not be encouraged.
