Schlosser is the author of the best-selling Fast Food Nation (2001), which was a consciousness-raising examination of the fast-food industry. He now turns his reporting acumen to American underground economic activity, which, according to him, constitutes 9 to 10 percent of this country's economy--in other words, millions and millions of dollars that "cannot be accounted for." The black market in the U.S. "is where economic activities remain off the books, where they are unrecorded, unreported, and in violation of the law." The author focuses on three major black-market arenas: marijuana, the most widely used illegal drug in the U.S.; migrant workers in California, most of them illegal immigrants; and the pornography industry. Of course, woven into his account of this trio of black-market gold mines is also an examination of their effect on all of us, for the consequences are far reaching, from employing a child-care worker to downloading pornography off the Internet. Title is misleading

Like the numerous other reviewers on here have mentioned, this book is actually 3 completely different stories that look at 3 different undergroundor black market aspects of American society. The stories explore how and where money is exchanged when the deals are not above board so to speak. The first section deals with marijuana and it is a pretty interesting read. Facts are all referenced and opinions are sprinkled throughout without being overwhelmingly bias. I enjoyed the book, but I had anticipated it would be all about drugs and the drug trade, not about migrant workers and strawberries. Good book, but not what I had expected. Shame on me for looking at the title and thinking it was all about Reefer. You can't judge a book by its cover, and apparently you should not base expectations on a title either.

Three Articles, Lightweight Sequel to Fast Food Nation

Although the author is gifted, this is a very light-weight sequel to Fast Foot Nation and the author's next book on prisons is therefore already suspect. This could have been a great book--indeed it could have been three great books--but in the rush to publish a second book in order to profit from the justifiable applause for his first one, the editor and publisher and author have all failed.
There are three articles here: the first is about the inconsistencies of the drug versus the murder laws, the number of people in jail for marijuana, and the social implications of all this; the second is on the underground economy of illegal workers and profiteering abusive corporations (McDonald's is especially evil in this depiction); and the third is about pornography but with a twist, focusing on how hotels and other major corporations are profiting.
The books ends with a very short but thoughtful observation regarding the need to change the law and punishment so as to back away from life-ending punishments for individual behavior that is merely self-destructive or distastement, and focus the heaviest punishments on those who commit economic crimes against society and entire sub-sections of society.
In each of these three cases, there are other books that are better--Deep Cover by Michael Levine on the futility of drug enforcement and the corruption of Drug Enforcement Agency "suits"; Forbidden Knowledge by Roger Shattuck, on pornography among other things; and The Informant by Kurt Eichenwald, on the sweetheart triangle between national-level white collar corporate criminals, big law firms, and a compliant Department of Justice that lets the richest bad guys off easy.
I would caution the author to not do this again--the next book had better be as good as Fast Food Nation, or he will fall into the second rank of serial writers rather than culture-changing authors, where he deserves to stay.
I would also encourage anyone considering buying this book to do so--it does have useful information--but more importantly, if you have not read Fast Food Nation, go to that page and think seriously about buying and reading it now--as McDonald's gets blamed overseas for being the epidemy of all that is hateful to Islamics, as Kraft Food pays lip service to healthy food in its realization that Oreo cookies are killing kids, what Eric Schlosser did in Fast Food Nation is being appreciated more and more each day--with that book, he did indeed change national consciousness, an achievement that will stand in history as a turning point in creating a healthier America.

Great book with great insight - not my first time reading it but I bought it for some "GET THE IMMIGRANTS OUT" Trump enthusiasts who say that immigrants cost us money; when the reality is that they contribute to our GDP and are quite nice to have around!

Short but powerful book with a lot of useful information!

C. THE LOMBARDI RULES by Vince Lombardi Jr. is a

short but powerful book that has a lot of information in it that can be

used by coaches, business executives and just about anybody else

looking to succeed in today's world.

The author, whose father led the Green Bay Packers to five NFL

titles in seven years, compiled several of Lombardi's most

famous quotes; for example:

I would say that the quality of each man's life is the full measure

of that man's personal commitment to excellence and to victory--whether

it be football, whether it be business, whether it be politics or

government.

He then transformed the quote into a rule, such as: Be

Completely Committed . . . and after a brief discussion

of what it meant, Lombardi Jr. showed various techniques

to implement the rule in any organization.

In the case of how to up the "commitment quotient," he

suggested:

Start with yourself: Inspire those around you with your own level

of commitment. When leaders go the extra mile, their troops will

follow.

Talent only gets you so far: A person with 100 percent ability

and 50 percent commitment can throw a wrench into the whole

system through inattention, inconsistency and laziness.

So far, so good...

I'm an avid reader and have ordered dozens of books through Amazon, but this is the first one I've taken the time to write a review for, because I believe this book can help others in the same situation I was.

I ordered this book when I was applying for Life Insurance, based on the investment strategy in Douglas Andrew's book, "Missed Fortune 101". I wanted to review another reference on life insurance to learn more about it, and to corroborate Andrews' strategy. This is the only other book I could find that discussed LI from a financial investment perspective. This is a very comprehensive book about LI. It's a large book, and so far I've only read portions, skipping around to the areas I needed to understand the type of policy I was applying for, and to justify in my mind that indeed it was the right one for me (I'm working with a financial planner who recommended a particular plan, and has largely focused his practice on Doug Andrews' strategy). This book gave me a lot of the information I needed to ask my agent questions about my policy. In fact, he was impressed with my questions and wanted the name of this book.

This is a very easy to read book, with plenty of *understandable* tables as examples. I have also found it to be very objective, discussing the tradeoffs of the different types of policies, and discussing in what personal situations a particular policy might be best. The intent of this book is clearly educational - there's no hidden agenda or bias that I can detect. The author has CFP, CLU, and CHFC credentials.

Finally, and very importantly, this author stresses the need to manage your life insurance policy over time, as you would any other investment - especially the flexible aspects of policies, and including, where necessary, 1035 transfers to a more appropriate policy.

This book is a must read, for anyone attempting to accumulate significant amounts of wealth and ample case reserves for a secure retirement. Once you grasp the full understanding of how best to pay for Life Insurance, the hardest part may be finding a qualified Financial Advisor to assist you over the long run. This is a long term arrangement, one that requires a long term Advisor, to assist you in doing what most people are not capable of doing....accumulating wealth. The book will also be a guide to refer back to, from time to time.

Great way to learn about insurance

The author did a geat job in explaining life insurance products. Those that have panned the book have a built in bias against insurance companies and their salesmen/woman. Fine, but I am waiting for one to write a cogent critique of why the author is wrong in his analysis. Frankly, I haven't found one financial services professional that can, even those that don't sale insurance products. Bottom line, the strategy makes sense for a many if not most folks who are trying to accumulate retirement $$. And yes the insurance industry makes good fees selling their products just like the securities companies make great fees with their products whether they are indexed mutual funds or stocks and bonds. I simply consider this the cost of doing business and move on. So what if someone makes some money helping you have a more comfortable retirement. Read it, take the ideas seriously, and incorporate the ideas into your plan. I have.

About the Author
Robert T. Clemen is Professor at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He has been an active contributor to the field of decision analysis since earning his Ph.D. at Indiana University in 1984 and is an authority in the use of expert information in decision and risk analysis. He has interests in applying decision analysis in the areas of energy use and corporate sustainabiligy. Aside from his research interests, Bob has a strong focus on making decision analysis understandable to all students at all levels, ranging from high school students to executives.

Terence Reilly is an associate Professor of Mathematics at Babson College. His interests include developing innovative curriculum for MBA programs, particularly distance programs, along with simulation and decision analysis. His research interests are in developing sensitivity analysis techniques and fitting distribution curves to univariate and multivariate uncertainties. Recently, he has developed courses in financial methods using simulation and decision analysis.

Cengage helped with Software loading issue - updated review

After two cycles with Cengage support, we finally got excellent support from Jeanette. She provided explicit instructions that allowed me to download an updated version of the software (@RISK 5.7) that worked in my environment (Win7, Excel 2010). We did have to do one final additional step (move the license file to "Palisade / System" directory) that was not in her instructions. We provided her feedback to add this step and thanked her for her support. We are having issues with teh SQL Server add-on optional feature, but this is a Microsoft issue and definitely not Cengage. Updating the review rating to 4 stars

Original review
Ordered new ISBN-13: 978-0-495-01508-6 that arrived new with the companion student software in separate CD case that is labeled ISBN-13: 978-0-534-40919-7 for my husband's class. Book and CD appeared to be new. He tried installing the software. No access code is readily obvious in either the book or the companion CD. Palisade points to Cengage. Cengage has replied to a request for support telling me to "look in the book for the access code". Provided them the ISBN of the book and CD and asked explicitly where the "access code" can be found. Waiting for an answer. It is unclear to us whether the book is really not new and the access card has been removed or whether the support from the Cengage is not helpful.

I would recommend buying this book and hopefully Cengage will provide the excellent feedback that I got from Jeanette on other's first contact with the support desk.

Bait and Switch

The book was highly recommended by my professor, and seems to be very good as expected. However the book's cover is worn and its Copyright statement indicates that Amazon delivered the obsolete 2001 Version when I had bought and paid-for a new Updated 2004 Edition. I am also disappointed that the included Palisade's DecisionTools Suite CD-ROM is a "limited tasking, time-locked" student version of the real software that will cost an additional $129 "for unlimited, non-timelocked use" or an additional "$450 for the Standard Suite." Ouch. Caveat emptor!

a starter book for decision making

the book is great by efficiently elaborate the wisdom from simple problems to multiattribute decision making, however, the software attached with the book is not working very well under Office 2010. So if you wanna use the software provided with the book, you'd better take it with windows XP and Office 2003. Besides, I really appreciate the eloquent cases in the book, which well clarify the scope and basis of the decision making principle.

A "must-have" book for those interest in negotiation theory and practice

This 1965 book, a first edition, is a "must-have" classic for all those interested in negotiation. The contemporary sounding sub-title says it all: An Analysis of a Social Interaction System. I purchased my copy because I am writing an article about Mary Parker Follett. For 50 years, Walton and McKersie have consistently recognized her "pioneering and impressionistic concept of integrative bargaining." Over the years, they have helped keep interest in Follett alive. While Follett is most-often thought of in connection to businessmen, she was close with the field of labor as well. She was a member of the wage arbitration board in Boston, and also sat in as an observer on cases before labor arbitrators and conciliators. This book is timely today.
