About the Author
Robert T. Clemen is Professor at the Fuqua School of Business at Duke University. He has been an active contributor to the field of decision analysis since earning his Ph.D. at Indiana University in 1984 and is an authority in the use of expert information in decision and risk analysis. He has interests in applying decision analysis in the areas of energy use and corporate sustainabiligy. Aside from his research interests, Bob has a strong focus on making decision analysis understandable to all students at all levels, ranging from high school students to executives.

Terence Reilly is an associate Professor of Mathematics at Babson College. His interests include developing innovative curriculum for MBA programs, particularly distance programs, along with simulation and decision analysis. His research interests are in developing sensitivity analysis techniques and fitting distribution curves to univariate and multivariate uncertainties. Recently, he has developed courses in financial methods using simulation and decision analysis.

Cengage helped with Software loading issue - updated review

After two cycles with Cengage support, we finally got excellent support from Jeanette. She provided explicit instructions that allowed me to download an updated version of the software (@RISK 5.7) that worked in my environment (Win7, Excel 2010). We did have to do one final additional step (move the license file to "Palisade / System" directory) that was not in her instructions. We provided her feedback to add this step and thanked her for her support. We are having issues with teh SQL Server add-on optional feature, but this is a Microsoft issue and definitely not Cengage. Updating the review rating to 4 stars

Ordered new ISBN-13: 978-0-495-01508-6 that arrived new with the companion student software in separate CD case that is labeled ISBN-13: 978-0-534-40919-7 for my husband's class. Book and CD appeared to be new. He tried installing the software. No access code is readily obvious in either the book or the companion CD. Palisade points to Cengage. Cengage has replied to a request for support telling me to "look in the book for the access code". Provided them the ISBN of the book and CD and asked explicitly where the "access code" can be found. Waiting for an answer. It is unclear to us whether the book is really not new and the access card has been removed or whether the support from the Cengage is not helpful.

Bait and Switch

The book was highly recommended by my professor, and seems to be very good as expected. However the book's cover is worn and its Copyright statement indicates that Amazon delivered the obsolete 2001 Version when I had bought and paid-for a new Updated 2004 Edition. I am also disappointed that the included Palisade's DecisionTools Suite CD-ROM is a "limited tasking, time-locked" student version of the real software that will cost an additional $129 "for unlimited, non-timelocked use" or an additional "$450 for the Standard Suite." Ouch. Caveat emptor!

a starter book for decision making

the book is great by efficiently elaborate the wisdom from simple problems to multiattribute decision making, however, the software attached with the book is not working very well under Office 2010. So if you wanna use the software provided with the book, you'd better take it with windows XP and Office 2003. Besides, I really appreciate the eloquent cases in the book, which well clarify the scope and basis of the decision making principle.

This 1965 book, a first edition, is a "must-have" classic for all those interested in negotiation. The contemporary sounding sub-title says it all: An Analysis of a Social Interaction System. I purchased my copy because I am writing an article about Mary Parker Follett. For 50 years, Walton and McKersie have consistently recognized her "pioneering and impressionistic concept of integrative bargaining." Over the years, they have helped keep interest in Follett alive. While Follett is most-often thought of in connection to businessmen, she was close with the field of labor as well. She was a member of the wage arbitration board in Boston, and also sat in as an observer on cases before labor arbitrators and conciliators. This book is timely today.

This is a modsecurity book ONLY

The description seemed misleading. This book dedicates its entirety to apache modsecurity. Any and all of the defenses are with modsecurity.

So, 5 stars if you wanted a book on modsecurity. I obviously did not.

The defenses were basic and probably well written out, if you use modsecurity and need help understanding it. I personally have no use for this book and a complete waste of money.

Most of us would think 'web application' as our program we built as a web application. Apache is a webserver. I was hoping for a book that might have extra guidelines or thoughts on adding great things to your web apps to defend them.

This book does none of that for me.

So, if you are not looking for mod security info, do not waste money. Seller should add 'modsecurity' only and possibly renamed the book as 'Modsecurity used to defend web apps' or something.

buyer beware.

to top it off, this book is not 'new'...it has scratches all over the cover. If it is new then it was damaged from shipping...

EDIT: I have contacted wiley and a rep will be getting back to me about changing this description from 'great techniques AND some madsecurity code' to 'modsecurity techniques only'

Don't be misled by the small blurb about mod_security...this is all the book is, pure mod_Security.

Personally, if you want to use mod_Security I would highly recommend this book..but if you are looking for this as a companion to the hackers handbooks to beef up your web app security, then you will be completely disappointed and out 30 bucks.

Great security resource for web application developers

While far from scientific, a search of web application security vulnerabilities returns over 2,600,000 results. However you search for it, web applications need to be secured, and insecure web applications are a major problem.

In Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users, author Ryan Barnett provides a highly technical resource for web application developers. All of the over 100 recipes are valuable tips on how to secure web applications.

In the forward to the book, Jeremiah Grossman of WhiteHat Security writes that a web defenders success comes down to understanding a few key points. One of those points is that defenders will find themselves responsible for protecting web suites they did not create and have little or no insight into or control over. That and Grossman's other observations highlight the imperative for organization to ensure that web application security is made an imperative.

Part of the challenge is that today's web sites are becoming more complex, with many interrelated connection, protocol and technologies. While many network infrastructures are a lot more secure; if web applications are not completely locked down, patched and secured, they are simply targets for attackers.

And the challenge is that even if a network is secured, it will still likely allow web traffic to pass through, given that http is perceived as friendly. And given that there is a lot that a firewall can't do; web application defense is a must-have item.
The reality is that securing web sites is difficult. But for those that want to ensure their web sites are as secure as possible, their developers should certainly implement the delicious recipes in Web Application Defender's Cookbook: Battling Hackers and Protecting Users.

It focuses a great deal on Mod Security for Apache; in some ways I wish it could be a bit more diversified.

I found the first part about measuring security to be very useful. It is beneficial to move beyond shock and awe when reporting about security to management. This book provides a way for real numbers that represent the validity of your security efforts.

LAURA WESTLEY is a West Point graduate, former US Army Captain and Iraq War veteran. She is the playwright and lead performer in her musical comedy show, also titled War Virgin. Want to know what war does to people? Read this book!

War Virgin is a laugh out loud, heartbreaking look into the dark underbelly of the US Army’s deeply sexist and Christian culture. This true story of sexual awakening is told by Laura, a West Point graduate and combat Veteran. The book goes back and forth between Laura’s time living with an oppressive religious father to her time at West Point and the invasion of Iraq in 2003.

Laura’s Christian beliefs crumble after first contact with war. We are told war changes people, and in this book you will see that transition take place in an unbelievable manner. You will read about a commander who attempted to stop soldiers from masturbating, to gross leadership incompetence when Laura invaded Iraq without even a basic map in her vehicle. You will also read about the systematic disempowerment of America’s most capable women through Christian teachings at West Point.

If you thought West Point was a place of empowerment for women, you won’t think that after reading this book. This book takes you into the repercussions of sexual repression widely accepted and deeply engrained in West Point and the born-again Christian communities. West point’s connection with Christianity produces women torn between the ideal submissive Christian woman and their own desire to lead soldiers. Laura’s story shows us how war is a powerful force capable of stripping away deeply held beliefs. War leaves you raw and gives you the opportunity to choose your own path which is what Laura did after a long and arduous journey through the desert of Iraq.

While women always bear the brunt of war’s worst through rape, displacement and sorrow, for Laura, war wasn’t a horrific experience. For Laura, war, not Jesus, was her ultimate savior.

Fascinating, Funny and Inspirational

I highly recommend this book! This chronicle of one woman's determination to prove herself and find self-acceptance is a very personal story yet it is also a universal story of the struggle many go through to overcome abuse and neglect. The author looks back on her voyage from a good girl who just wanted to please daddy to a confident, independent and sensual adult. It is a memoir told in frank and conversational language and is surprisingly funny, despite the tough subject matter. As a child and teenager she did everything right yet was rarely shown love and appreciation by her parents...the rigid religious repression and most of all the emotional abuse and neglect was downright heartbreaking. Yet despite this lack of nurturing, she remained determined to succeed. It was thrilling to watch her explore and grow and experiment with how to best fit into a world in which she was the minority, as a woman at West Point, in the army and at war. The first hand insights into the odd combination of hyper-vigilance and dulling boredom and drudgery while stationed in the middle east was fascinating. The description of the invasion of Iraq was quite a surprise! The scars her upbringing and experiences in the Army left damaged her deeply and I was cheering her on the whole time as she hit rock bottom and then struggled to become whole and to heal and to find self-acceptance. This person who got so little as a child is committed to giving back to others. Her metamorphosis to a kinder, stronger and more adventurous person than anyone would have predicted based on her early years is touching and inspirational.

Bravery in spades! Cheers to Laura for giving her struggle a voice.

I was introduced to War Virgin by my husband, a classmate of Laura's at West Point. I was anxious to read about the school and war from a female perspective - as I had been privy only to a male's point of view. Well, I loved it! I found it very readable, and I found her struggle relatable - despite our varying backgrounds. At the heart of the book she is like any of us, driving forward through an often challenging life, trying to find meaning. Her path, complicated by duty, honor, country and female-ness, offered a perspective I was eager to acquire. Laura's writing felt personal and real, and I read it as if a friend was telling me her story. The pacing kept me engaged, as did the drama and laughs. I lamented arriving at the end of the book, but ultimately, I was relieved that she had broken through, found her inner strength and claimed her life as her own.
