And yes, I actually DO own the book. It is a decent book among a crowded shelf of business management self-help books. Not worth the 5* sweep though.

A comprehensive, cohesive, and cost-effective methodology to achieve breakthrough results

In Leading Change, James O'Toole suggests that much (most?) of the resistance to change initiatives is the result of what he so aptly characterizes as "the ideology of comfort and the tyranny of custom." Roger Connors and Tom Smith fully agree. In a previous collaboration, The Oz Principle, they explain how to get desired results through individual and organizational accountability. They introduce "Steps to Accountability," a sequence of actions: See It (i.e. recognize what must be done), Own It (i.e. make an investment in as well as a commitment to getting it done), Solve It (i.e. recognize and eliminate barriers with whatever resources may be needed), and Do It (i.e. producing the right results in the right way, as promised). Connors and Smith also suggest that people tend to live and work (most of the time) either above or below "The Line" that divides accountable behavior from behavior that is not.

As they note, "We use the term `result,' rather than `goal' because result implies that either you will achieve something or that you have already achieved it. In contrast, `goal' suggests that you would like to have something happen, but might not accomplish it. A goal tends to be hopeful and directional, but not absolute." In this context, I reminded of what Thomas Edison observed long ago: "Vision without execution is hallucination." Apparently the Yoda agrees: "Do or do not. There is no try."

Connors and Smith devote Part One (Chapters 1-5) to explaining how to create a Culture of Accountability, define the results to be achieved, take effective action to produce them, identify core believes that guide and direct behavior, provide experiences that support efforts, and reinforce results to sustain their beneficial impact. In Part Two (Chapters 6-10), they explain how to align cultural values with change initiatives, apply effective three Culture Management Tools they recommend (i.e. focused feedback, focused storytelling, celebration of incremental progress), and three skills needed to move the culture from where it has been to where it should be (i.e. Lead the Change, Respond to the Feedback, and Be Facilitative). Obviously, it would be a fool's errand to adopt and then attempt to apply all of Connors and Smith's recommendations. It remains for each reader to select what is most relevant and responsive to her or his needs and those of her or his organization.

With regard to buy-in of the plan, once formulated, Connors and Smith suggest and then discuss Five Principles of Full Enrollment (Pages 196-213):

1. Start with accountability
2. Get people ready for the change.
3. Begin with the top and intact teams.
4. Establish a process control and keep it honest.
5. Design for maximum involvement.

Those who need additional assistance with achieving full (or at least maximum) enrollment, I highly recommend John Kotter's A Sense of Urgency and his more recent book, Buy-In: Saving Your Good Idea from Getting Shot Down, co-authored with Lorne A. Whitehead. For supplementary readings, I also highly recommend Dean Spitzer's Transforming Performance Measurement: Rethinking the Way We Measure and Drive Organizational Success and Enterprise Architecture As Strategy: Creating a Foundation for Business Execution, co-authored by Jeanne W. Ross, Peter Weill, and David Robertson.

I was really hoping to see something new and insightful here but as I read through each page in anticipation, nothing ever developed. this is the same old stuff in a new cover. nothing new here. Seems to me to be the operating model of most authors - write a book, wait a few years - update with a new cover. Smith and Connors need some new ideas.

Book is very good. But I should have done some more research and compared ccsp with ccsk. Since ccsk gives basic knowledge and exam fee is less.

I personally feel ccsk should be given first shot and later ccsp.

Great methodology book

Whether you're new to phage research or have been doing it for some time like myself (almost a decade), this book and it's accompanying volume 2 are a must for any phage researcher. It's full of easy to follow procedures with hints/notes that will help understand the purpose of some of the steps undertaken.
I would highly recommend this book: not only is it the new 'Adams' (phage bible) equivalent, but it's also affordable.

I Love Love Love This Book!

I LOVE this book! It has exercises to help one practice being mindful - to help strengthen that mindfulness muscle. It arrived rather quickly and I was so excited when I seen that it came. As I was flipping through the pages, I thought, 'Wow! This is no run-of-the-mill activity book like others I've seen!' I cannot wait to get started. I recommend this lovely book for anyone seeking to become more mindful. I am thrilled to have it. I'll be ordering a few more for my friends. They'd certainly make the perfect gift.

About the Author
Yves Congar, OP, who died in 1995, was a French Dominican widely recognized as one of the most important Roman Catholic theologians of the twentieth century and a major influence upon the theology of the documents of Vatican II. About the Author

Charles Platt is a Contributing Editor and regular columnist for Make magazine, where he writes about electronics. He is the author of the highly successful introductory hands-on book, Make:Electronics, and is writing a sequel to that book in addition to volumes 2 and 3 of the Encyclopedia of Electronic Components.

Platt was a Senior Writer for Wired magazine, and has written various computer books. As a prototype designer, he created semi-automated rapid cooling devices with medical applications, and air-deployable equipment for first responders. He was the sole author of four mathematical-graphics software packages, and has been fascinated by electronics since he put together a telephone answering machine from a tape recorder and military-surplus relays at age 15. This is the perfect introduction to hands-on electronics

I am about a third of the way through this book and I am loving it. This is the perfect introduction to hands-on electronics. I was an engineering student in college (although not electrical engineering) so I was always kind of upset that after spending countless nights of my life doing all sorts of crazy math problems with respect to circuits, I didn't know something as simple as how a relay works, or how to build anything except maybe a simple circuit with a lightbulb and a resistor. I could design and build an RC circuit and calculate its time-constant but why in God's name I would ever NEED to build an RC circuit was beyond me...
No more. This book lets you know that its safe to rip open a relay and see exactly why it works. It will give you a circuit design and then have you build it. It will explain why something is or isn't working, and why. This won't make you an expert in electronics, it is definitely on the simple side of things (like algebraic simplifications of mathematical models that are actually rooted in calculus or differential equations), but that's exactly what I was looking for. This book will empower you to build things. I am reading it side by side with the Electricity & Magnetism chapters of my old Physics textbook so I can make the connections with the real theory and the nastier side of the math, but I really couldn't be happier. In spite of years of college, this book is just now making me feel like I know something about electronics.
Also, I recommend buying the kit that's sold for this book because it will save you a little money and a LOT of time. Amazon has been out of stock of it forever, but I went to the closest Radioshack and they had it for $75. Other than that, you will need to buy Digital Multimeter, a pair of wire strippers that can deal with 22-gauge wire, a pair of wire-cutters, a pair of needlenose pliers, and a set of precision screw drivers. Seems steep but if you plan on making use of your new-found knowledge for the foreseeable future, you will be using these tools well after you've worked through this book.

Intro book for the beginner, handbook for the intermediate/advanced

**Intro**
This is a nice electronics book. It starts out basic enough that I would say an enthusiastic student in 4th grade or higher, with ample support from their parents could probably get into electronics as a hobby by beginning with this book. It is also suitable for much more advanced people if they are willing to skip the first third of so of the book where the basics are. I meet this category, since I'm a Mechanical Engineer (but importantly, not an Electrical Engineer), and I'm happy to have bought this book just the same.

**Notable positive features**
1.) This book is substantial. It has glossy pages, color photos, and is 325 pages long. The pictures are bright and sharp. This is the second edition, and the author described the things that have been improved from the first edition.
2.) There's a lot of basic info for accommodating beginners, and a good brush-up course for more advanced people. It tells how to solder, identify resistors, install and use things like IC's and LED's without burning them out, etc. It tells the basic facts about electronic components, like what IC's, LEDs, and capacitors *are*. It recommends tools and where to get tools and equipment from. It encourages you to experiment in order to learn, like it tells you how to actually go burn up an LED just to see how much (or how little) abuse they can take.
3.) It has helpful info to explain the subtle electrical engineering concepts that have always confused me, like the difference between a relay and a transistor, and what the three leads on transistors do. My college electronics textbooks didn't do a good job at this, so that's the sort of thing that I'm getting out of this book.
4.) It has safety information. Soldering safety. Shock hazard safety. What you should and shouldn't be afraid of.
5.) It doesn't jump into wiring diagrams instantly. It uses photos and other types of sketches for people who haven't mastered wiring diagrams yet.
6.) It has little bits of electronics history in it in the form of photos of the scientists and engineers from history, and captions under the photo. This keeps things entertaining without filling the text with unwanted extra info.
7.) There is information toward the end on how to program software for your own contraptions using Arduino, a fun, versatile, and cheap software that is good for programming robots and other things.
8.) There are some neat example projects, including a crystal radio (a radio that doesn't need batteries).

**Comparison to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk**
This book is pretty similar to Hacking Electronics by Simon Monk, and those interested in the topic at hand should consider both of these books. Both are well written, cover a similar spectrum of topics, have color photos, and have glossy pages. I would say both are equally good in writing and content *quality.* This book is slightly longer than the Monk book, and thus has more content, so I like it slightly more for that, because I'm a little more advanced, and I tend to want as much info as possible so I can use it as a reference or handbook. Finally, this book seems a little better for hardware tinkering people than the Monk book, since the Arduino part in this book comprises a smaller percentage of the whole book than in the Monk book.

**Summary**
If you want to get into tinkering with electronics for fun, or want to learn more about electronics via a "learn by doing" approach, this is definitely a good book. It starts out basic enough that you can probably start from the very ground level, with knowing almost nothing. I think this book would also be good if you are teaching grade school or middle school students about electronics. Finally, this book would be a good handbook for the shop of a maker, circuit bender, hobby roboticist, or anyone else that likes to tinker with electronics, and needs an occasional reminder about resister color codes, for example, or how to hook up transistors.

I recommend this book with essentially no reservations!

Great book to learn basic electronics

I decided to take up learning electronics after years of being in the dark and not understand how any new gadgets worked and now I love it thanks to Make Electronics! I started googling to find the best sources for an adult to learn basic electronics and this book kept coming up so I picked one up along with the protechtrader component pack for Make Electronics 2nd edition. After getting through the first few experiments I fell in love with the book and couldn’t put it down. The author Charles Platt does a very nice job of engaging you and being easy to understand for someone without much of a background with electronics other than using them. It also made it really nice to have the component pack with all of the parts to match the experiments otherwise I may not have gotten very far. I would recommend this to anyone looking to learn basic electronics, you will not be disappointed.
