INTRODUCTION
On February 26, 2012, my paper airplane design, Suzanne, flying 226 feet and 10 inches, broke the old paper airplane world record for distance by 19 feet and 6 inches. It’s fair to say that Joe Ayoob, my thrower, and I shattered it. The old mark had stood for nine years. Joe and I had made better distances in the six prior practices, but then, that’s what makes record breaking so interesting. A record during practice isn’t a record. It’s not official until declared so under the specific guidelines during a sanctioned attempt.

Records are made to be broken. It’s the whole reason for having them. The goal, the chase, the falling short, and the trying again are all required components of a record attempt. This record was no different. I tried many models over a three-year period when I was “officially” working on breaking the record. Of course, the truth is, every great distance plane I ever made was step toward this goal. My hope is that your world-record journey starts, or continues, here. Helping someone else break this record is another of my goals. Perhaps it will be you.

Believing you can do it is the first step. Making something as sophisticated as a flying machine from the most modest of resources is the beginning of an adventure. Where does it lead? Using less to make more is where we have to go as a planet. Eventually we’ll find a way to use less energy to light a room, less fuel to move from home to job, and make less pollution from powering the world. Viewed from this perspective, the answers seem obvious: conservation—yes, creating new products and technologies—yes, doing less—no, doing more with less—yes. And we’re back to paper airplanes.

I’m frequently asked what advice I have for budding paper pilots. Oddly, I’m usually at a loss. Folding comes so naturally for me, I can’t imagine not making paper airplanes. It’s taken me years to figure out that not everyone is like this. It’s true that some people might actually need encouragement. After giving this due consideration, I’ve come up with the following suggestion.
If you’ve never been to a Maker Faire, find one and go. It’s a celebration of making things—all kinds of things—from tiny robots to clothes to giant sculptures of steel and stone, and yes, sometimes paper airplanes. Making things is part of who we are as Americans and who we are as humans. From the biological imperative to make more people to the need to know who made that cake, we’re hardwired to like the whole idea.

As a kid, I liked making toys. My brothers and I would make spinning tops from wooden spools, rubber-band guns using spring-loaded clothes pins as the triggers, parachutes from napkins and string, rubber-band powered boats, kites, balsa-wood planes, and yes, paper airplanes.

Sadly, making things has been largely lost as part of our culture. Toys now need to “do something” so that even playing with the thing is optional. In my view, this is a huge mistake. We are robbing ourselves of a very important experience: experimenting, exploring, creating—in short, making things.

Paper airplanes embody the scientific method. Every throw is an experiment. It’s a hobby that begs the paper pilot to understand ever more in order to excel. Hypothesis, experiment design, trial, and results—it’s all built into every plane and every throw. To play with a paper airplane is to dabble in science, whether you know it or not.
We have a number of global issues confronting us. Global energy shortages, food shortages, water shortages, and something people are calling global warming are all worrisome. These problems will have answers that only science can provide. We have no spare brains on the planet. We need everyone thinking about these challenges in a rigorous way.

Imagine this: a world of people playing with science, who get up every morning, focus on what’s good, and imagine how to make more of that. You can call me a dreamer. I don’t mind. You don’t have to believe a word of what I say. Just make a paper airplane and experience how exhilarating that feels. We’re born makers. When you make something, anything from a pie to a pencil drawing, it’s like waking a dormant part of you. The world shifts slightly. You can feel it, and it feels good.

Suzanne, the world-record paper airplane, boasts a series of firsts: the first glider to hold the distance record, the first paper airplane to use changing airspeed to enhance performance, the first plane to use a thrower/designer team, and the first plane to break the record after the run-up-to-throw distance was shortened from 30 to 10 feet. It is a truly amazing aircraft. I believe Suzanne changes the way distance records will be broken in the future. The days of brute-force darts are gone, replaced by the age of true gliders.

A little free advice: take nothing for granted. Suzanne is a great aircraft. I didn’t find the design hiding in someone else’s work. I created it by working hard, listening closely, and observing keenly. You probably possess these skills too. This plane is only one of many possible solutions to the challenge. You may discover others.

Fold an extra plane for me, and perhaps I’ll meet you in the winner’s circle.

More easy to make paper planes and info than you will probably ever need!
By Maximzodal
Collins has published several other books of planes and just gets better at illustrating how to fold them and explaining the nuances of making one perform. Many of the paper planes I've made over the years were dogs despite being advertised as great. This book helped me understand why. A slight miss-crease here, a bad fold there, and they usually added up to disappointment and were quickly consigned to the recycle bin. Collins discusses and illustrates how to tune your plane so it doesn't disappoint. In addition, there is a lot of easily understood information about the aerodynamics that allow these planes to fly. Who knew there is a correct and incorrect way to throw a plane? There is heavy, colorful, tear-out paper for some of the planes in the back of the book. But, I'll just continue to use regular printer paper or the card stock that fronts some magazines and advertisements. A useful, educational book.

Low-tech fun with the kids, but terrible print quality
By dosawalla
I purchased this book for ideas for our school's Science Night, and was inspired after seeing John Collins' interview on Conan. While the folding and flying provide hours of entertainment, I was shocked by how poor the print quality is of the book. It looks like a low-resolution inkjet was used cover to cover, which makes discerning the folds difficult, and is a good strain on my eyes. I found that for the purposes of learning a few new paper plane designs, there are several decent Google Play/Apple App Store apps that provide clearer, animated folds for great flyers, as well as plenty of content online. I wish I'd previewed a hard copy of this book before purchasing.

Single largest collection of truly exceptional planes. . . for enthusiasts
By Chris Akers
This is one of two "must have" paper airplane books that are out there for serious folders.

I have collected almost every paper airplane book in or out of print that I could find in the last few years as I discovered that paperflight was a great way to combine two of my hobbies: paragliding and origami. So being the obsessive that I am for these sorts of things, I started rounding up every book on the subject and I discovered that there are really just two books that I couldn't do without: this book and LaFosse's "Planes for Brains."

Inside this book you will find all of Mr. Collins' most useful and elegant models with a few exceptions that can be found in his first book, "The Gliding Flight." The "Suzanne" model which was used to set the distance world record referenced in the title of the book is really the most elegant and impressive plane model around. It is simple enough that anyone over 6 or 7 could fold it, but it just goes and goes. Forgoing the tape and using nose or fuselage locks makes for a go-to plane in any situation. Two others not to miss in this book which were included in earlier books of his are the "Starfighter" and the "Boomerang." Both are great, especially the latter. With some practice at both folding and flying, the Boomerang is too much fun. And how Collins ever figured out how to fold this plane is a mystery as its folds are rather non-intuitive, however it is definitely worth learning.

There seems to be some dissatisfaction regarding this book in that the models are too complex. They are complex, but they are not the most complex around. They are, however, the most accomplished around. The models in the LaFosse book mentioned above are really beautiful and have their own genius to the folding (they are even more complex), but they do not perform as well as Collins' planes do. If you are looking for a rudimentary paper airplane book, I would recommend the Klutz book as it is simple, but has some useful ideas for kids to explore with.

Hope that helps.

The Outsiders' Guide to Las Vegas, by Tim Dressen

Along with “what happens here stays here” and “Circus Circus isn’t that bad,” one of the biggest Las Vegas myths is that so-called insiders are the city’s best sources of tips, reviews, and information. Often, however, obsessive Las Vegas visitors offer more trustworthy suggestions and accurate insights about the Las Vegas Strip and Fremont Street. An unapologetic Las Vegas outsider, author Tim Dressen shares advice, hints, and unfiltered opinions gathered as cohost of Five Hundy by Midnight, the Original Las Vegas Podcast, for more than a decade. With the same irreverent spirit as the podcast, The Outsiders’ Guide to Las Vegas is packed with useful information, entertaining perspectives, and more than a few off-the-rails rants. This is the Las Vegas guide by an outsider, inspired by outsiders, and for outsiders.

Informative and very entertaining!
By Kevin C. Maki
As a longtime fan of the Five Hundy by Midnight podcast and a frequent Las Vegas visitor, I have been looking forward to Tim Dressen's book for some time. I was not disappointed. The book is well researched, informative, and very entertaining. The author's sarcastic wit is on full display while he provides a great deal of practical information to help visitors get the most from their Las Vegas trips. Throughout the book, links are provided to help the reader easily access schedules, fees and additional details. All of the major hotels and attractions are covered (one of my favorite lines being a description of the Rio hotel/casino theme as "Carnival of Sadness") and the book includes many useful tips on topics ranging from how far in advance to make reservations to "strategic restroom planning." This is not a book influenced by Las Vegas industry PR touts; the author is not afraid to provide his unvarnished views on what his readers should expect from the full range of casino/hotel, entertainment and drinking/dining options.

The most fun Vegas guide there is.
By Hunter Hillegas
Author is a friend so I got to read a pre-release copy of this book.

As you'd expect, it contains all of the normal sort of bits and bobs about traveling to Las Vegas. What's different is the unique voice of the author. Tim Dressen's witty prose is just fun to read.

I'd recommend this book to both Vegas newbies and seasoned veterans. There's something in it for everyone.

Unbiased and What You Need
By Howard Park
This book is so much better that the standard corporate guide books to Las Vegas or even the sometimes informative Lonely Planet types. Tim Dressen knows a lot about Las Vegas but has the spirit of a typical visitor in town for three or four nights who rarely leaves the tourist areas -- the Strip and Fremont St. The Outsiders' Guide includes all the information relevant to the typical visitor without trying to cover every chain restaurant or third rate off-strip motel. Things are different in Las Vegas and a good guidebook will help a newbie visitor a lot more than most "normal" tourist destinations. Dressen's podcast has caught on because he has resisted spouting the PR'isms that infect virtually everyone who is paid to promote nightclubs, casinos and restaurants. The book is an extension of what Tim and his wife, Michelle have been doing for years over the internet. Unbiased information about Las Vegas can be hard to come by. The Outsiders Guide is not the last word on everything that a Las Vegas lover might want, but it includes everything that most visitors need.

This is how a math class should work!
By A.L. Sipes
Follow Mr. Johnson's classroom organization and teaching philosophy and you will have a math class that works. He tells you how to start your class on time with the bell and have nonstop learning the entire period. The books are very short (66-98pages) but packed with techniques you can use right away.
You can use his techniques on any grade level and with any subject, not just math.

Good set of tips and tricks for new and old teachers
By MW
I've been teaching high school math for 7 years now. A few years ago, I was handed this book, but I felt like I never had time to go through- which is ridiculous because it's so short. This summer I've been blasting through books trying wrap my head around the possibility of flipping my classroom. This book rocks. It's older and I wouldn't use all the suggestions, but there are so many good ones and the book is a short, quick read- once you get started! The only thing I disagree with is the U shaped seating. I couldn't do it in my 40 student classroom even if I wanted to. However, I am able to put students in groups of 4 and that takes me off the stage and gives the students more control over their learning experience. I also just read through the sequel to this book and found it to be worthwhile also. If you're a math teacher, you should add this to your bookshelf.

The Year of the Runaways: A novel, by Sunjeev Sahota

Short-listed for the 2015 Man Booker Prize

The Guardian: The Best Novels of 2015
The Independent: Literary Fiction of the Year 2015

From one of Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists and Man Booker Prize nominee Sunjeev Sahota—a sweeping, urgent contemporary epic, set against a vast geographical and historical canvas, astonishing for its richness and texture and scope, and for the utter immersiveness of its reading experience.

Three young men, and one unforgettable woman, come together in a journey from India to England, where they hope to begin something new—to support their families; to build their futures; to show their worth; to escape the past. They have almost no idea what awaits them.

In a dilapidated shared house in Sheffield, Tarlochan, a former rickshaw driver, will say nothing about his life in Bihar. Avtar and Randeep are middle-class boys whose families are slowly sinking into financial ruin, bound together by Avtar’s secret. Randeep, in turn, has a visa wife across town, whose cupboards are full of her husband’s clothes in case the immigration agents surprise her with a visit.

She is Narinder, and her story is the most surprising of them all.

The Year of the Runaways unfolds over the course of one shattering year in which the destinies of these four characters become irreversibly entwined, a year in which they are forced to rely on one another in ways they never could have foreseen, and in which their hopes of breaking free of the past are decimated by the punishing realities of immigrant life.

A novel of extraordinary ambition and authority, about what it means and what it costs to make a new life—about the capaciousness of the human spirit, and the resurrection of tenderness and humanity in the face of unspeakable suffering.

Review
Praise for The Year of the Runaways:

"No recent novel does a more powerful job capturing the day-to-day lives of immigrants than "The Year of the Runaways," which was shortlisted for the 2015 Man Booker prize... Mr. Sahota... has an instinctive sense of storytelling, immersing us in the dilemmas of his characters... Writing with unsentimental candor, Mr. Sahota has created a cast of characters whose lives are so richly imagined that this deeply affecting novel calls out for a sequel or follow-up that might recount the next installment of their lives."

— Michiko Kakutani, The New York Times

“The Grapes of Wrath for the 21st Century… America's fresh spasm of xenophobia makes this devastating story about the plight of immigrants all the more relevant now . . . Relentless . . . Absorbing . . . The great marvel of this book is its absolute refusal to grasp at anything larger than the hopes and humiliations of these few marginal people . . . The story’s momentum feels absolutely overwhelming . . . Read this novel.”

—Ron Charles, The Washington Post

“Mr. Sahota’s masterly immigrant saga . . . powerfully reminds us of just what immigrants seek in the West . . . Absorbing, highly textured . . . The Year of the Runaways is a poignant exploration of the fate of friendship and goodness in a frontier world . . . Superb.”

—Sam Sacks, The Wall Street Journal

"Immersive... Sahota is a clear-eyed, unflinching storyteller, switching seamlessly between the characters' desperate present circumstances and the crises at home that lead to their migration. The book is a major achievement, a compassionate tale about the cruelties of twenty-first century immigrant life."

—The New Yorker

"A unique reading experience...get lost in this sprawling, stunning novel."

—Malcolm Forbes, Minneapolis Star Tribune

"[Sahota's] powerful recent novel, The Year of the Runaways is a striking exception to the kind of bourgeois cosmopolitanism with which the literature (and academic literary criticism) of the professional South-Asian diaspora is identified"

—Los Angeles Review of Books

"An intensely immersive story that, through its forthrightness, shines light on the harsh realities of undocumented immigration...Ambitious in everything it tackles... The novel prevails not only in the power of its myriad messages but also in the experience of reading it."

—The Harvard Crimson

Praise from the U.K. for The Year of the Runaways:

"All you can do is surrender, happily, to its power."

—Salman Rushdie

"A brilliant political novel, deeply felt, told in the most intimate of ways...Sahota knows how to turn a phrase, how to light up a scene, how to make you stay up late to learn what happens next.  This is a novel that takes on the largest questions and still shines in its smallest details...a brilliant and beautiful novel."

—Kamila Shamsie, The Guardian

"A novel of great moral intelligence...deeply impressive."

—Claire Lowdon, The Sunday Times

"Sahota proves a wonderfully evocative storyteller...fascinating...the real thing."

 —Mihir Bose, The Independent

"Should be compulsory reading. A magnificent achievement."

—John Harding, Daily Mail

"The best novel of the year....judges of forthcoming literary prizes need look no further."

—Cressida Connolly, The Spectator

"A rich, intricate, beautifully written novel, bursting and seething with energy"

—Kate Saunders, The Times

“Nothing short of an asteroid impact would have made me put the book down”

—Irish Times

“Timely and humane.” —The Guardian: Literary Fiction of the Year 2015

"A quietly devastating examination of immigrant lives."

—The Observer: Best novels of 2015

“I defy anyone to read it and retain any simplistic opinions about “economic migration.”

— The Independent: Literary Fiction of the Year 2015

Arrivals

Randeep Sanghera stood in front of the green-and-blue map tacked to the wall. The map had come with the flat, and though it was big and wrinkled, and cigarette butts had once stubbed black islands into the mid-Atlantic, he’d kept it, a reminder of the world outside. He was less sure about the flowers, guilty-looking things he’d spent too long choosing at the petrol station. Get rid of them, he decided, but then heard someone was parking up outside and the thought flew out of his head.

He went down the narrow staircase, step by nervous step, straightening his cuffs, swallowing hard. He could see a shape through the mottled glass. When he opened the door Narinder Kaur stood before him, brightly etched against the night, coat unbuttoned despite the cold. So, even in England she wore a kesri. A domed deep-green one that matched her salwaar kameez. A flank of hair had come loose from under it and curled about her ear. He’d forgotten how large, how clever, her eyes were. Behind her, the taxi made a U-turn and retreated down the hill. Narinder brought her hands together underneath her chin—“Sat sri akal”—and Randeep nodded and took her suitcase and asked if she might follow him up the stairs.

He set her luggage in the middle of the room and, straightening right back up, knocked his head against the bald light bulb, the wire flexing like a snake disturbed from its tree. She was standing at the window clutching her handbag with both hands.

“It’s very quiet,” Randeep said.

“It’s very nice. Thank you.”

“You have been to Sheffield before?”

“My first time. What’s the area called again?”

“Brightside,” he said.

She smiled, a little, and gazed around the room. She gestured towards the cooker.

“We used to have one like that. Years ago.”

Randeep looked too: a white stand-alone thing with an overhanging grill pan. The stains on the hob hadn’t shifted no matter how hard he’d scrubbed. “There is a microwave, too,” he said, pointing to the microwave. “And washing machine. And toaster also, and kettle and sofa-set . . . carpet . . .” He trailed off, ridiculous to himself. “The heater works fine. It’s included in the rent. I’m sorry there’s no TV.”

“I’m used to it.” She looked to the wall. “Nice map.”

“Oh. Thank you. I thought . . .” What did he think? “I want to visit every continent of the world.” She smiled politely, as if he’d said he wanted to visit the moons of Jupiter. “It’s one of my dreams.”

There were only two other rooms. The bathroom was tiny, and the pipes buffalo-groaned when he forced the taps. In the centre of the greenish tub the hand-held shower lay in a perfect coil of chrome, like an alien turd.

“And this is your private room,” he said, opening the second door.

She didn’t step inside. There wasn’t much to see: a double bed, a rail for her clothes, a few wire coat hangers. Some globs of Blu-Tack on damp, loose wallpaper. There was a long, hinged mirror straight ahead which they found themselves staring into, him standing behind her. She didn’t even reach his shoulders. It was cold and he noticed her nipples showing through her tunic. Frowning, she pulled her coat shut and he averted his eyes.

“I’m sorry,” he said. “It’s too small. And dirty. I’ll look for something else tomorrow.”

“It’s fine. Honestly. Thank you for finding it for me.”

“Truly?” He exhaled relief. “There is a bus from the bottom of the hill that can take you into town.”

“And that hill will keep me in shape.”

“And this isn’t an area with lots of apneh.” Her lips parted, but she didn’t speak. “Like you asked,” he reminded her. “And the gurdwara’s only a few stops away. In Burngreave. I can show you? If you like?”

“We’ll see,” she said. “It’s late. Can I call you tomorrow?”

“Of course. But you should know that the flat downstairs is empty. So no disturbances.” He smiled, pleased with himself. “Yes, this flat was a special find. Especially at this time of year, it is not easy. We were lucky.” That “we” was problematic and knocked him off balance. “But I should go,” he said hastily. He took up his red tracksuit top and zipped it to his chin, pushing the short sleeves up to his elbows.

She walked him to the stairs, saying, “You should probably bring a few of your things and leave them here.”

He nearly blurted out that his suitcase was just outside, in the gennel. “I will bring some. But I will telephone you first.” He wouldn’t be one of those boys who turned up at a girl’s house unannounced and unexpected. Then he remembered about the meter tokens. “The light.” He pointed down the stairs. “There is a meter underneath. It takes the pink electric tokens. Not the white ones. The pink ones. There is a shop around the corner. The aunty there sells them.”

She looked confused. “Do I have to collect these tokens? Like vouchers?”

“Collect them from the shop, yes. Only be careful you put the cards in straight. Would you like me to show you? The meter?”

She’d never heard of electricity being pink, or white for that matter, but she was tired from the journey and said she really did just want to sleep. “But thanks for everything, Randeep.”

She used his name, without “ji” and to his face, which hurt him a little. But this was England. “No problem. And do not worry. You won’t need any for a while yet. I put lots in before you came.”

She thanked him again, then—perhaps out of nerves, needing her fingers occupied—retightened her chunni over her turban and under her chin. It made her eyes look bigger, somehow.

Randeep opened his wallet and held out some notes to her. “Next month’s.” He was looking away. He hated doing it like this. At least when she lived in London it had gone by post. She too seemed embarrassed to take it.

He said goodbye. Halfway down the stairs he stopped, looked round. “I hope you don’t mind, but is everything all right? You are not in any trouble?”

“Oh, I just need to rest. I’ll be fine tomorrow. Can I call you?”

“Of course you may. Of course.” He smiled, then went down the remaining steps and opened the door. He nodded a final goodbye. She leaned forward out of the doorway, arms folded. She looked un-certain.

Randeep held his suitcase across his lap on the bus ride home. Of course she wasn’t going to ask him to stay. It was stupid of him to have thought she might. If anything, he wondered now if she’d seemed eager for him to leave her alone. He spat coarsely into his hankie and worked out a bit of dirt on the brown leather of his case, which still gleamed, in spite of the coach to Delhi, the flight to London, and now three months spent wedged on the roof of that disgusting wardrobe.

He got off right outside the house and saw the grey-blue light of the TV flickering behind the closed curtains. He’d hoped they’d be asleep by now. He went the long way round the block, stopping off at the Londis for some of those fizzy cola-bottle sweets.

“You are leaving?” the singh asked. The suitcase.

“I was helping a friend move only.”

The TV was still on when he got back. Randeep turned the key gradually, wincing at the loud final snap of the metal tongue, and went straight up to his room on the second floor. He sat there polishing his workboots with the toilet roll and after that he changed the blanket on his mattress, taking care with the corner-folds. Then he lay down, the darkness roomy around him, and with no real enthusiasm reached for the toilet roll once more.

It was near midnight when the clanging of the gate woke him up. He hadn’t meant to fall asleep afterwards and the scrunch of sticky toilet paper was still in his hand.

Downstairs, he went through the beaded curtain and found Avtar gulping straight from the tap. The back of his uniform read crunchy fried chicken. Randeep stood in the doorway, weaving one of the long strings in and out of his fingers. There was a calendar of tropically naked blonde women on the wall by the fridge. Someone would have to get a new one soon.

Avtar turned off the tap, though it continued to drip. “Where is everyone?”

“Asleep.”

“Did someone do the milk run?”

“Don’t think so.”

Avtar groaned. “I can’t do everything, yaar. Who’s on the roti shift?”

Randeep shrugged. “Not me.”

“I bet it’s that new guy. Watch, they’ll be bhanchod burnt again.”

Randeep nodded, sighed. Outside the window, the moon was full. There were no stars though, just an even pit of black, and if he altered the focus of his eyes, he saw his vague reflection. He wondered what his father would be doing.

“Do you think Gurpreet’s right? About what he said this morning?”

“What did he say this morning?”

“You were there.”

“I was asleep.”

“He said it’s not work that makes us leave home and come here. It’s love. Love for our families.” Randeep turned to Avtar. “Do you think that’s true?”

“I think he’s a sentimental creep. We come here for the same reason our people do anything. Duty. We’re doing our duty. And it’s shit.”

Randeep turned back to the window. “Maybe.”

“And I asked bhaji, by the way, but there’s nothing right now.”

The job, Randeep remembered. He was relieved. He’d only mentioned it during a low moment, needing solidarity. One job was enough. He didn’t know how Avtar managed two.

“How’d the thing with the girl go?”

“Nothing special,” Randeep said.

“Told you,” and Avtar picked up his satchel from where it rested against the flour barrel. He took out his manila college folder and wriggled up onto the worktop.

Randeep had learned by now that when Avtar didn’t want to be disturbed he just ignored you until you went away. He let the beads fall through his hands and was turning to go when Avtar asked if it was true that Gurpreet hit him this morning in the bathroom queue.

“It was nothing,” Randeep said.

“He’s just jealous, you know.”

Randeep waited—for sympathy? for support?—but Avtar curled back down to his book, trying out the words under his breath, eyes glinting at the end of each line. Avtar’s posture reminded Randeep of the trips he used to make between college and home, his own textbook open on his lap.

In his room, he changed into his tracksuit bottoms, annoyed he’d forgotten to warm them against the oven, then slid inside the blanket. He knew he should try to sleep. Five hours and he’d have to be up again. But he felt restless, suddenly and inexplicably optimistic for the first time in months. Years? He got up and moved to the window and laid his forehead against the cool pane. She was somewhere on the other side of the city. Somewhere in that dark corner beyond the lights, beyond that pinkish blur he knew to be a nightclub called the Leadmill. He wondered if she’d noticed how he’d spent each evening after work scrubbing the doors and descaling the tiles and washing the carpet. Maybe she was thinking about all he’d done right now as she unpacked her clothes and hung them on the rail. Or maybe she’d decided to have a bath instead and was now watching TV, thick blue towels wrapped around her head and body the way British girls do. His forehead pressed harder against the glass. He was being ridiculous again. There was no TV, for one thing. But he couldn’t lose the sense that this was a turning point in his life, that she’d been delivered to him for a reason. She’d called him in her hour of need, hadn’t she? He wondered whether she’d found his note yet, the rose-scented card leaning inside the cupboard above the sink. He cringed and hoped she hadn’t. At the time, in the petrol station, he’d convinced himself it was the sophisticated thing to do. Now, he exhaled a low groan and closed his eyes and forced himself to remember each carefully written word.

Dear Narinderji, I sincerely hope you are well and are enjoying your new home. A beautiful flat for a beautiful person. And a new start for us both maybe. If I may be of any assistance please do not hesitate to make contact. I am at your service day and night. In the interim, may I be the first to wish you, in your new home, a very Happy New Year (2003).

Respectfully yours, Randeep Sanghera.

It was gone 2 a.m. and Avtar was still sitting up on the counter. He’d long set aside his college notes. His ankles were crossed and the heels of his trainers lightly tapped the cupboards. He could feel his eyes start to close, a shallow dark descending. He jolted himself upright. “Come on, come on,” he said, half to himself, half to Bal, the guy he was waiting for. He checked his phone. He recounted the money. He had enough, had earned enough. Then his phone rang, too loud for that time of night. It was them.

“So we come to yours?”

“No, no. Keep to the gardens.” He didn’t want them knowing where he lived.

He zipped up his jacket and sneaked out of the house and down onto Ecclesall Road, heading away from the city. The shabby restaurants were all closed, the pound shops shuttered. He liked this road in the day, a place of business and exchange, a road that seemed to carry on into the hills. Tonight, though, there was only a scrappy silence, and the city at his back, the countryside glowering ahead. He gripped the top of the zip between his lips, flicking it with the end of his tongue, and breathed out puffs of air that hung briefly in the cold. He turned up towards the Botanical Gardens and saw them sitting in their rich black BMW, faces flooded by the car’s interior light. The engine was still gunning. Bal got out, the eldest of the three brothers, all long leather and shaped facial hair. The gold ring on his right hand was the size and shape of a fifty-pence piece. Avtar nodded, jogged to meet him.

“Why so late? I have work soon.”

“True what they say, man. Fuckin’ cold up north.”

“You were held up?”

“By another one of you chumps. In Birmingham. He won’t be do-ing that again.”

Lofty dreams and stark realities
By D. Christopher D'Guerra
It’s winter. Randeep lives in Sheffield, England with 13 other Indian illegals. This house is squalid, cramped and cold. He is assigned the breakfast shift this morning, meaning he gets up at 3 to make and pack lunch for the whole crew. The van picks them up at dawn and they spend the next 12 hours at the construction site, laboring and trying to keep warm, all for a pittance. Still, they are thankful there’s work this week. And the house hasn’t been raided yet.
Randeep to his room-mate: ‘I mean when you were a kid, did you ever think you’d be working in Sheffield, in England, and living in a house like this? I’d never even heard of Sheffield.’
When Randeep, Avtar and Tarlochan left the misery of their lives in India in search of opportunity and fortune this is not what they had envisioned, and it is this realization that lends poignancy to the novel.
These initial pages were written in a pleasant graceful style, the conversations were engaging and book’s overall tone was inviting: I felt as I do when I walk along the beach, enjoying the water’s soothing effect on my toes as I contemplate the sunset. What I didn’t see was the approaching tidal wave that would hurl me into the lives of the various personages and engulf me in their tumultuous vicissitudes. Exploited and threatened, the trio relies on sheer fortitude and determination to ensure their survival.
“Runaways” drew me in completely. I was transported to a land and a situation unbeknownst to me and humanized to the plight of these particular migrants and their search for a better life. At book’s end, though sadness pervades, a glimmer of hope emerges.

Exposes some of the truly unpleaseant aspects of Indian society
By ann mcdonald
This novel was challenging to read but not because of Sahota's writing skills. It takes the reader out of their comfort zone reading about the struggles of Indian immigrants to the UK, living on the border of legality if not illegal. It certainly asks you to rethink your views about "economic migrants".
The novel explores the circumstances which motivate each of the "runaways" to try their luck in Britain, believing as they do that jobs and money will be easily available, enabling them to help their families. Their lives in India are centred on family but constrained by social expectations and gossip. Expectations that the younger generation(male) will have brilliant careers and support their parents and younger siblings; fear of not maintaining a successful facade seems to dominate the lives of the mothers. Women have few opportunities beyond the hope for a satisfactory marriage. All the families' hopes are pinned on the young men who are driven to terrible lengths to realize these hopes.

The lives of the young men in England are increasingly driven by desperation- the relentless need to make enough money to support family and pay off debts. They are preyed on by their fellow countrymen who also live on the shady side of the law. They have no recourse to England's social services as most of them are terrified of being found and sent home.

The novel exposes some of the truly unpleasant aspects of Indian society as well as the hollowness of the dreams of wealth and status in England. Although the young mens' stories end well, the ending seems tacked on and seems hardly plausible, given their dire and hopeless circumstances. However, the novel is hugely engaging to read and each character's story( there is one woman) reveals another aspect of the endlessly fascinating culture of India.

Uneven -- almost redeemed by a woman
By Lab Lady
There's a lot to like about this book but it ultimately disappoints. The non-English words were not a problem at all and the author's prose was generally fluid and interesting. The stories of how the principal male characters wound up leaving India were terrific and did a nice job of capturing striking moments from contemporary India. But once they got to Britain, the story stalled somewhat and it was hard to keep the characters separate in one's mind. OK, sure, the point of this might be the author showing how once they join the stream of economic migrants to a Europe that doesn't want them, they all meld together and are no longer individuals but simply part of an indistinguishable crowd. Trouble is, nothing they do and nothing happens to them in England is remotely as interesting as their Indian pasts and these sections are tedious. I almost gave up and I never give up on books. It's as if the author is simply uninterested in what happens to them in Britain. For example, a secondary character is gravely injured in a fight and though the main characters deal with it, it's pretty much forgotten. The bright spot (and the main reason to read this book) is the story of Najinder, the female lead. She is not a migrant but herself British and her dilemmas and subsequent growth and sensitively rendered. She's basically invisibile for 60% of the book, but don't give up reading: her story is worth the wait. Once you get to her section, the story excels for a while. Sorry to say, the ending is also very limp --- as if Sahota simply didn't know how to end it. I found the fates of the male characters uncompelling --- and in no way consistent with where they were when their narrative dropped off. Najinder's fate is a bit of a tease in that you might be hoping for one thing and get another, but honestly neither of the possible endings for her were particularly surprising. I'm glad I read this, but don't really see how/why it wound up on the Man/Booker shortlist.
