Editing sentences about strippers??!!

I bought this to possibly use for a high school writing class for homeschoolers. In the first section, it asks students to correct this sentence: "We invited the strippers Katy Perry and Jay-Z." How is this type of material appropriate, and what was Princeton Review thinking when they published it?? Needless to say, it's on it's way back to Amazon for a refund.

I'm only halfway through this and have already found numerous errors. I question some of their rules and designations; they don't fit with what I have previously been taught, leaving me more confused than educated. I tried contacting the Princeton Review about the errors because I'm suspicious of these kinds of errors in a grammar book.

Shockingly incorrect and misleading

An ESL student of mine has been working on this book independently and came to me with a whole host of questions, all of which result from mistakes, confusing explanations and incorrect rules that the book states. It is shocking. I have recommended that he throws it in the garbage where it belongs, and so should you.

About the Author

Joseph D. Sloan has been working with computers since the mid-1970s.He began using Unix as a graduate student in 1981, first as anapplications programmer and later as a system programmer and systemadministrator. Good, but completely out of date

This was a great book when it was published in 2004 (over 12 years ago), but is now completely out of date. OpenMosix is no longer maintained, and probably shouldn't be used, to cite just one example. The OSCAR project hasn't been updated since 2011, LAM/MPI was retired in 2015. If you are completely new to linux compute clusters, it still contains some useful information, but generally nothing can be regarded as technically reliable. Oddly, this is yet another technology where there haven't been any subsequent editions or more recent books on the same subject. I don't get this, because, for example, ROCKS clusters are still ubiquitously used in scientific research on campuses all over the world, and the documentation isn't that great.

OSCAR info badly out of date

I recently installed an OSCAR cluster on our PowerEdge SC1425 servers; Since the book just came out this year, I thought it would provide some more up to date insights into items that are not included in the install manual.

No such luck, you will find no mention of the need to upgrade SIS if you have SCSI or S-ATA drives, there is no information on Peter Mueller's kernel, or why you may need it. Or why the whole process seems to work but the nodes never can boot (OSCAR sometimes makes a bad initrd.img - check the size).

This book is NOT a good OSCAR resource, if you're a newbie it just leave you feeling frustrated as to why it sounds so simple and just doesn't work.

Forget openMosix part.

Just wanted to mention that openMosix - which is proposed in the book as an attractive component for the cluster, was discontinued in March, 2008. Right now I'm working with other parts such as Oscar, using the book more as a guideline than as a howto manual - nevertheless, it handles a very easy language and explains very clearly most concepts.

About the Author

JANET BURROWAY is the author of plays, poetry, essays, children’s books, and eight novels including The Buzzards, Raw Silk (runner up for the National Book Award), Opening Nights, Cutting Stone, and Bridge of Sand. Her publications include a collection of personal essays, "Embalming Mom," in addition to a volume of poetry, Material Goods, and two children’s books in verse, The Truck on the Track and The Giant Jam Sandwich. Her most recent plays, Medea with Child (The Reva Shiner Award), Sweepstakes, Division of Property (Arts & Letters Award), and Parts of Speech, have received readings and productions in NewYork, London, San Francisco, Hollywood, Chicago, and various regional theatres. Janet Burroway's Imaginative Writing: The Elements of Craft, 3rd Edition adds several new short stories, nonfictions, poems, dramas and drops some of the ones in the second edition, keeping the overall page count of the book about the same. Notably enhanced are the chapters on drama and on poetry. The drama section includes several examples of a newly popular genre, the ten-minute play.

Although marketed as a textbook for Creative Writing 101, this book can serve as an excellent primer for self-teaching. On completing the brief "try this" exercises included, you'll acquire a good understanding of the craft elements and be able to judge whether the comments on your work by other apprentice writers in a workshop or your friends are on the mark or not. Beware that even positive, flattering comments ("I loved this image...") can mislead you.

Unlike the reviews to date, my review focuses on the current edition, not the first edition.

The overall organization of the book is unchanged. The first part comprises chapters on the five elements of craft common to all genres of imaginative writing: Image; Voice; Character; Setting; Story. The second part comprises chapters on the four genres: Creative Nonfiction; Fiction; Poetry; Drama.

Among the new examples in the second edition are the following: contemporary short stories such as Jhumpa Lahiri's "Interpreter of Maladies," William Trevor's "Sitting with the Dead," Ron Carlson's "Big foot Stole My Wife"; contemporary poems by Billy Collins, Annie Tibble, and Henry Reed: contemporary creative nonfiction by Gayle Pemberton, Bill Capossere, and William Kittredge; contemporary drama by Carol Real, Jim Quinn, and Josh ben Friedman.

Also new are a series of developmental exercises, located in the basic techniques section at the end of each chapter. This series is designed to facilitate readers "toward a finished" draft of a short story.

Burroway has wisely retained many of the exemplary selections from the first edition such as Charles Baxter's "Snow," Donald Barthelme's "The School, and Robert Olen Butler's "Missing."

Its unique multigenre approach, lucid expositions, and "Try This" prompts make IMAGINATIVE WRITING the best primer for teaching yourself.

Great writing book.

I really like this writing book. I had to have it for a writing class and it's actually better than some of the other books I have had to have in the past. The stories are better and the explanation of everything is very clear and totally understandable. I even liked this book so much I decided to keep it instead of selling it back. It has come in handy when writing my own book.

Good for aspiring writiers

I am an aspiring writer myself and I must say this book has been a great help. It has a chapter dedicated to every element necessary for a well written story; Character, Setting, Voice, Plot. There are also very useful exercises that help you develop your skills in each of the necessary aspects. It also helps you write every day, which is something any writer should be doing. Over all it is a very helpful book and in the short time I have had it I have poured out two short stories that, in my opinion, are much more full than anything I have written before.

And the characters... well, they're always the best part of Viola's stories. Don't get me wrong, Viola's books are always fast paced, well crafted, well developed and well edited and truly, a pleasure to read but it's her characters that I fall in love with every single time. Her characters are always unique, captivating, engaging and endearing but she creates, hands down, the best, grumpy, growly, quite possibly irredeemable and certainly the most arrogant male antiheroes of anyone I know. You know, the kind we love to hate but secretly love.and of course, are always devilishly handsome.(Swoon....) And the male protagonist in this story is no exception. Viola skillfully combines all of these elements to craft a delightfully entertaining paranormal tale filled to the brim with heart-pounding danger, heartbreaking drama, heart-stopping action, spine-tingling adventure and let's not forget, steamy, dreamy romance. When I read a Viola Rivard story, I'm always reminded of the Carly Simon song, Nobody Does It Better. The words replay in my mind: Nobody does it better, Makes me feel sad for the rest, Nobody does it half as good as you, Baby you're the best. And Viola definitely is the best! Buckle up my lovelies! It's another wild ride! And this time, we travel to the tundra of the Arctic for our story.

Twenty-eight year old Astrid Castello is very much out of her element. As a native Floridian, the climate of the Arctic tundra definitely does not agree with her and it's all her younger sister Ginnifer's fault. Months ago, her sister traveled to the Arctic to film a documentary on the way of life of werewolf packs living in the area and after finishing her film, she returned to the Siluit Pack and Zane, their alpha, is holding her prisoner. If her sister isn't already dead and Astrid can somehow manage to rescue her, then she's going to kill her for this. She doesn't even really like her sister but here she is, neck deep in trouble in the Arctic, trying to rescue her sister for her parents' sake. Yes, it's for them because she doesn't want to tell them that their favored daughter has traveled back to Nunuvat to live with the Siluit werewolf pack. And it has cost her everything including all her money! Well, technically the twelve thousand dollars she paid for her guides was actually Ginnifer's money since she withdrew(stole) it from Ginnifer's bank account but she wouldn't have had to do it if Ginnifer had stayed at home instead of traipsing all over the globe as a freelance documentary filmmaker. And now, she finds herself in the middle of nowhere with a group of men who started out as her very kind guides but had now turned into a group of opportunists who were only interested in poaching the furs of werewolves and probably murdering her. Her plan was to travel to the location of the Amarok Pack and try to make a deal with their Alpha, Erik, to enlist his help in recovering her sister from the rival Siluit Pack where her sister is being held. Unfortunately, her meeting with the Amarok Pack did not go as planned. She has seriously underestimated the sheer and savagery of the werewolves because the wolves of the Amarok pack have just slaughtered all of her very questionable guides, leaving only her alive. Oh my! Erik is a handsome, arrogant, ruthless and very selfish wolf who is determined to have things his way and unfortunately, there's only one deal the Alpha is willing to accept - her. Huh? Oh yes, Erik demands that she give herself willingly to him in exchange for him helping to rescue her sister. Oh my goodness! What's a girl to do? Why, make a deal, of course! Sadly, Astrid soon realizes that she has truly sacrificed everything to rescue her sister from the clutches of a demon and in the process, has ended up selling her own soul to the devil. Oh my! Will Astrid somehow manage to save her sister and herself or will she be Erik's new plaything until he grows tired of her and gives her to another wolf???
Book Two:
The story continues with Astrid struggling to find her place in the pack while learning exactly what being owned by Erik entails. At the same time, Erik is desperately struggling to control his wolf, something he has never had a problem with before. Apparently his beast believes that Astrid is his mate and is determined to have her and only her.Oh my! Will Erik be able to maintain his control or will he lose the battle to his wolf??? Will Astrid be able to convince Erik to rescue her sister from the Siluit Pack??? No spoilers from me but I will say this......Arrogant, ruthless, dominant Alpha wolf who takes what he wants regardless of the consequences and may just be irredeemable-check! Curvaceous, naive heroine who is on a mission to save her sister and may just talk the alpha wolf to death-check! A sister who is 'supposedly' being held captive by a rival werewolf pack-check! A cast of wonderful characters-check! Danger, drama, action, adventure and enemies galore-check! Unconventional romance and steamy sex-check! That and a whole lot more! I can hardly wait for Book Three! Seriously sexy, completely captivating and delightfully entertaining!

Alpha wolf making changes for his mate

Well, Erik is having quite a bit of trouble silencing his wolf to not think about Astrid. Since his wolf has become more possessive, it'll be interesting to see if he can still give her to his brother Sten once Erik has grown tired of her.
Astrid is learning her way within the pack. I do believe she is starting to realize that she means something to Erik but he is really good at playing his mind game of knocking her down a few notches.
I wonder how his sleeping so deeply works into the story. He either has fought his wolf for so long and since they are not one it wears him out or something is wrong with him. Poor Erik, things could just be easier for him if he wasn't so overbearing. But I do understand where he's coming from in wanting to keep the pack in line and safe along with their territory from being taken from them or invaded.
This story just keeps getting better and better. Can't expect that every story line is going to be wolf meets mate, live happily ever after with no bumps in the road. Life isn't that way. That's what makes things interesting in this story.
This is a must read.

When you dont want to love him but cant help it.

I was so sure that Erik would come around alittle more in the 2nd installment. But true to his character he never disappoints. He is drawn to Astrid but tries to shake it off. Little does he know that his wolf has other plans for him with her. Waking up next to her he slept the best sleep he ever had which I think is why he is so disterbed by it. Never should he behave the way he is so he thinks. His brother Sven has already told him what he already knew which is that Astrid will ruin him when its all over. She makes him feel more alive and more caring something he doesnt wasnt. He hopes that he can get a hold of his feelings. Mean while Astrid is futher from the team that is going to look for her sister in a year. She's trying to get him to budge. Just when she thinks she has him figured out he says something so horrible that you wish you could slap his face for it. I really cant wait to see whats in store for them in book 3.
