Lead Wars: The Politics of Science and the Fate of America's Children (California/Milbank Books on Health and the Public), by Gerald Marko

In this incisive examination of lead poisoning during the past half century, Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner focus on one of the most contentious and bitter battles in the history of public health. Lead Wars details how the nature of the epidemic has changed and highlights the dilemmas public health agencies face today in terms of prevention strategies and chronic illness linked to low levels of toxic exposure. The authors use the opinion by Maryland’s Court of Appeals—which considered whether researchers at Johns Hopkins University’s prestigious Kennedy Krieger Institute (KKI) engaged in unethical research on 108 African-American children—as a springboard to ask fundamental questions about the practice and future of public health. Lead Wars chronicles the obstacles faced by public health workers in the conservative, pro-business, anti-regulatory climate that took off in the Reagan years and that stymied efforts to eliminate lead from the environments and the bodies of American children.

A fascinating new book. --Howard Markel"PBS Newshour The Rundown Blog" (03/29/2013)"

"The prolific team of Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner has done it again. Lead Wars: The Politics of Science and the Fate of America s Children is a thoroughly researched, passionate, and gripping history of a major public health problem. . . . Lead Wars challenges us to take better care of our children by fighting those industries that appear to regard them especially poor black and Latino children as disposable."--Elizabeth Fee"Health Affairs" (10/01/2013)"

From the Inside Flap
“The story Rosner and Markowitz tell of generations of children gravely damaged by promiscuous dispersal of lead, and the persistent attempts made to evade responsibility for the harms caused, is both true and shocking. This book will not just educate future environmental and health leaders, it should outrage them.”—Richard J. Jackson MD, MPH, Professor and Chair, Environmental Health Sciences, UCLA Fielding School of Public Health

"Lead Wars argues that the tragedy of lead is one that our society is doomed to repeat again and again unless we develop better safeguards to protect us against chemicals and new technology. This book is a "must read" for public health professionals as well as for political scientists, social historians and for all who care about the future of America's children."—Philip J. Landrigan MD, Ethel H. Wise Professor of Community Medicine and Chairman in the Department of Preventive Medicine at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine

"Can being poor justify differing standards for research or a focus merely on harm reduction and the politically feasible? Markowitz and Rosner make the compelling case that in public health the practical and possible may in the end be immoral and dangerous, and a consequence of the war on science. A necessary read for anyone who cares about public health, the role of government, children, medical experimentation and environmental justice."—Susan M. Reverby, McLean Professor in the History of Ideas and Professor of Women's and Gender Studies, Wellesley College

“Lead poisoning remains a tragedy (and scandal) of immense proportions, and the authors utilize new sources—including previously unexamined court records—to tell a story that is as gripping as it is important.”—Robert N. Proctor, Professor of the History of Science at Stanford University and author of Cancer Wars

"This book tells the story of a public health tragedy affecting millions of children, the determined doctors who tried to help, and an industry propaganda campaign which prolonged and worsened the tragedy. For as long as powerful corporations manipulate politicians and public opinion to profit from dangerous products, this will remain an important story for our country."—Sheldon Whitehouse, United States Senator

Lead Wars makes clear the public health dangers we face if we continue to ignore this corporate strategy that defines “acceptable” levels of risk for the thousands of chemicals in use. It brings home the importance now more than ever of taking a precautionary approach to managing toxic chemicals. This book is a must for any activist who wants to understand the strategies polluters use to continue business as usual. —Lois Marie Gibbs, Executive Director, Center for Health, Environment & Justice

"In this outstanding book, Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner utilize historical scholarship to expose a major tragedy in recent public health: the failure to protect children from the harms of lead in our environment. Despite the fact that the toxic effects of lead have been known for centuries, they show—using previously unavailable documents—how the lead industry has protected their profits at public expense, despite their explicit knowledge of its many dangers. Lead Wars brings this tragic history to light in a narrative that integrates deep investigation and analysis with compelling advocacy and compassion for children who continue to be at risk from one of the world’s best-known toxins."—Allan M. Brandt, Professor of the History of Medicine at Harvard University, and author of The Cigarette Century: The Rise, Fall, and Deadly Persistence of the Product That Defined America

"Markowitz and Rosner have majestically woven the key characters and elements of the history of lead poisoning into a captivating narrative that exposes a tremendous and terrifying truth; unless it serves the needs of private enterprise, public health is incapable of controlling the causes of chronic disease and disability. In place of prevention, we have settled for partial solutions. Everyone who has an interest in public health, health policy or history should read this book."—Bruce Lanphear, MD, MPH, Clinician Scientist, Child & Family Research Institute BC Children’s Hospital and Professor of Health Sciences, Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC

"Lead Wars" should be required reading in all medical schools
By K. DAVEY
Lead paint and "tetraethyl lead" poisoning of children resulting in brain damage and death represents one of the most hideous public health disasters in America.

The Ethyl Gasoline Corporation manufactured "tetraethyl lead" because when mixed with gas, it improved vehicle performance and fuel economy. Gerald Markowitz and David Rosner wrote that "lead became part of the air Americans breathed when, in 1923, lead was introduced into gasoline to give cars more power. With the dramatic growth of this vast industry, every American child, parent, and neighbor began to systematically incorporate into their bodies a toxic heavy metal that was already known to be poisoning workers in the United States and elsewhere."

For decades, Medical Director of the Ethyl Corp., Robert A. Kehoe, M.D., gave "scientific cover" for Ethyl, and became the principal defender of keeping "highly profitable" lead in gasoline, which contributed to the poisoning of millions of American children from 1928 until TEL or tetraethyl lead was outlawed in 1986. Industry-owned research facilities conducted lead studies, usually with pro-lead results; research was carefully crafted to benefit industrial sponsors, not the health of U.S. citizens. Incredibly, under oath in 1966, Dr. Kehoe told Congress that he and his colleagues at the Kettering Laboratory in Cincinnati, Ohio "had been looking for 30 years for evidence of bad effects from leaded gasoline in the general population and had found none." Kehoe argued that lead is "normal" in the human body and even recommended, for the sake of progress, elevating the lead level in gasoline. There was, he said, "not the slightest evidence" of harm from airborne lead, and claimed that leaded gasoline posed no risk at all to public health.

Needless to say, Kehoe was tragically wrong. Herbert Needleman, M.D., a courageous pediatrician at Temple University discovered a direct correlation between lowered IQ and increased lead content of baby teeth collected from children in North Philadelphia. He got the idea from the 1950s, when strontium 90, a by-product of atomic testing in Utah, became a component in the teeth and skeletons of babyboomers across the USA. Needleman's research in the 1960s indicated that "leaded" gas exhaust poisoned babies both inside and outside the womb. A recent study found that children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder have elevated average blood-lead levels 20-30% higher than children without ADHD. The central nervous system of a fetus or young child, undergoing rapid changes, is particularly vulnerable to lead exposure. For his pioneering research, Dr. Needleman, now in his late 80s, should have received the Nobel Prize in Medicine.

Many European countries banned the use of lead-based paint as early as 1909. The U.S. lead industry "chose to run massive marketing and promotion campaigns all through the first half of the twentieth century despite their knowledge that lead paint was causing children to go into comas, suffer convulsions, and die." The USA allowed the continued use of lead in paint until 1978, but lead does not biodegrade. Today, 2% of American children are diagnosed with lead poisoning.

The demise of Kehoe's leaded gas was accelerated when Clair Patterson, a geochemist at Caltech analyzed core drillings of ice in Antarctica indicating that concentrations of lead in the environment had increased an alarming 350 percent between 1930 and 1965. When leaded gasoline was marketed nationwide in the late 1920s and in the 1930s, the frequency of childhood lead poisoning reported in medical journals increased dramatically. Unfortunately, scientists in the United States have lost funding and have been exposed to lawsuits (or much worse) after their evidence-based research produced results that threatened powerful economic interests. When Drs. Alice Hamilton, Harriet Hardy, Randolph Byers, Clair Patterson, and Herbert Needleman presented unwelcome lead data, petrochemical interests devoted considerable resources attacking them personally. Suppression of unwelcome lead research and fiendish harassment of independent scientists was not uncommon, particularly during the pre-EPA era.

While children continue to be exposed to lead, those born in the 1990s have higher IQs than those born 20 years earlier, when lead was lavishly dumped along U.S. roads and highways. Based on the government's Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease Registry, about 68 million American children experienced toxic exposure from leaded gasoline during the Ethyl era. Between 1976 and 1996, removal of lead from gasoline precipitated nearly a 90% drop in children's blood-lead levels according to the CDC.

Markowitz and Rosner remind us that society is measured by the treatment of its children. "For more than a hundred years, we have knowingly poisoned our children and destroyed the future of millions of our citizens." Lead in paint and gas has been foisted on us by "rapacious industries that have knowingly profited from our human suffering." The challenge for young pediatricians is that lead poisoning is a preventable disease.

Excellent book
By Nick Lees
I am a Professor in Environmental Management and found the material in this book to be very informative and thought provoking. My intent is to use the background and facts presented here in a case study on the politics of toxic substances in my class on the Interactions of Hazardous Materials. My industrial background included first hand experience with the Formaldehyde question back when the EPA and OSHA were considering significant regulatory changes after the initial valid rat study. I was employed by the industrial sector at the time and we were very intent on showing the true science behind the question, yet we still had the best interests of industry on the table at all times. I can readily see how the authors have honestly treated this dangerous exposure to the adverse health effects of very small amounts of lead in our environment. The actions on the part of the industrial sector here are deplorable and go beyond the effort to put the true science of the issue before the public and the health agency regulators.

A "must read" for parents of young children and those in the public health field.
By monoplygy
This is a well-written, easy to read, accurate account of how lead became so pervasive in the environment in general and in housing in particular. The book documents the struggles the City of Baltimore and Johns Hopkins University made to eliminate lead poisoning as a threat to the public health.

The book also outlines how the same political and economic pressures apply to other substances, such as bisphenol A.

The book contains extensive references to support the statements.

GOOD START
By Rafael Cruz Reyes
The book is a very good material for people that does not know anything about these technologies. Covers most of the broadband technologies which is good because is difficult to find everything in just one book. However in some parts of the book needs more editing work (residential broadband). Finally, the latest edition was on 1997, I think is time to release a new edition Mr. Black

Review
Praise for Rhonda Helms's Scratch

"A powerful story of pain and healing, and the redemptive power of forgiveness. Every character in Scratch is beautifully flawed, their emotions raw and authentic.  .  ..I didn't want it to end. I cried, I laughed, I swooned. Phenomenal!"  --Rachel Harris, author of Accidentally Married on Purpose

"Haunting, hopeful, and heartbreakingly tender." --Lexi Ryan, New York Times bestselling author

One of my favorite reads of the year!
By Deanna Lynn
*ARC provided by Publisher in exchange for a fair and honest review *

First Impression: Well-written, the character of Megan pulled me right into the story and I loved getting to know her and seeing the college world through her eyes.

I've not had the pleasure of reading anything by Rhonda Helms before so I had no preconceived notions in reading Break Your Heart, but I have to say, I fell in love with this book and its characters. The writing was easy and interesting to read, the story and situations were engaging and realistic to the time and setting and the characters involved, and the heroine, Megan, is easy to like and relate to, whether that be her inner feelings about Nick, her life at college, or the experiences she's gone through in the past and going through now in the present.

In this book, we've got a professor/student theme going on and I have to admit, I do love reading books featuring this particular theme. It's that whole forbidden love aspect thing I think, which is another one of my all time favorite themes to read because of the conflict and struggle the characters go through during the story. That same conflict and struggle was present in this book, and it was there the moment college senior Megan Porter meets Professor Nick Muramoto, who has taken over teaching her cryptology class and who also happens to be her newly assigned thesis advisor.

From the start, there was a sense of inevitability to Megan and Nick's meeting, and I loved the author's writing and storytelling ability so much, I was actually anxious for Megan and Nick to make that first step toward crossing the line. There was such good emotional buildup to that moment, and Megan is one of those characters you can't help but like and want to root for, even as you know she's headed for a hard, fast fall.

One thing I absolutely loved and adored about Megan is how observant she is of the people around her, her friends most of all. She sees them, in ways other people around them may not get, and that makes her a special kind of person to me. It also makes it more troubling to realize that while she can see other people and their lives, she might not see her own life and her own choices all that clear, and she has a habit of judging things or analyzing things without knowing the truth of them. All those differences in her character fascinated me, and made her interactions with Nick all the more nerve wracking and intense.

I liked these characters together. I liked how they got to know one another, despite them both knowing nothing should occur between them. This was a fantastic story. One I highly recommend reading, especially if, like me, you love New Adult romance and crave stories of forbidden love and unquenchable longing.

"Break Your Heart" by Rhonda Helms

What I liked about this novel....

I found this novel of "Break Your Heart was a sweet New Adult read dealing with a 'African American heroine and a Asian American hero that turned out to be a sweet read especially for the New Adult readers. The story line was right on point all the way from the beginning of the read to the end. This story of if Megan [student]and Nick[professor] who become involved. The characters were all well developed, defined, well portrayed and yes...believable that help to keep this read right on chart. It was very interesting to see how this student was going to handle all that was put in front of her and even so with that 'professor.' The author even worked other problems into this read that will keep the reader turning the pages to see what will happen next. So, from a infatuation with a professor to life with family [mom issues]...we are given a read that with imply some secrets that will come out. Will this heroine be able to handle it all? Will Megan be able to 'silence the noise around her and listen to what her heart is telling her? And omg that hero Nick was simply off the chart...loved that 'Terminal Tower scene.' This is where I will say you will have to pick up this read to find out will Megan and Nick be able to make it and get what they want in the end.

I received an advance copy from NOR in exchange for an honest review.

A good teacher-student romance
By The Tale Temptress
More like a 3.5.

I'm a fan of student-teacher stories, so I was really looking forward to this one. I especially liked the fact that it was taking place in college with people way over the age of consent, and with a young professor whose attempting to qualify for tenure. Lots of angst and potential conflict there.

I liked the characters, especially Megan, very much. I loved how motivated she was. She knows what she wants out of life and she's going for it very carefully. The introduction of Dr. Nick Muramoto is something of an unexpected surprise, and she's not sure where her attraction and feelings for him come from. I liked Nick, but I couldn't help but wish I had gotten to know him just a little bit better.

I thought there was some good sexual tension between these two , but I might have waited just a bit longer for it to develop, let them fight it a bit longer before finally giving in. I wanted to feel more of that build-up, and I definitely wished the author had stretched out the angst an danger of discovery aspect just a little longer. I wanted to bite my nails a bit longer, be worried just a bit more, before the inevitable happened....because you know it's going to.

I did, however, love how the author handled it from there. It was a different ending than I've come to expect, so kudos to the author for originality here. The story was good, pretty fast-paced, and my favorite aspect was the female lead, Megan. I loved her strong, motivated character. A good story.

The Road to Ruin: The Global Elites' Secret Plan for the Next Financial Crisis, by James Rickards

Penguin presents the unabridged downloadable audiobook of The Road to Ruin, written and read by James Rickards.

The best-selling author of The Death of Money on how investors can prepare for the next financial panic - and why it's coming sooner than you think.

The global economy has made what seems like an incredible comeback after the financial crisis of 2008. Yet this comeback is artificial. Central banks have propped up markets by keeping interest rates low and the supply of money free-flowing. They won't bail us out again next time. And there will be a next time...soon.

In The Road to Ruin, best-selling author James Rickards identifies how governments around the world are secretly preparing an alternative strategy for the next big crisis: a lockdown. Instead of printing money to reliquify markets and prop up assets, governments are preparing to close banks, shut down exchanges and order powerful asset managers not to sell. They're putting provisions in place that will allow them to do so legally. What's more, the global elite has already started making their own preparations, including hoarding cash and hard assets.

When the next one comes, it will be the average investor who suffers most - unless he or she heeds Rickards' warning and prepares accordingly.

James Rickards is the best-selling author of Currency Wars and The Death of Money. He is a portfolio manager at West Shore Group and an adviser on international economics and financial threats to the Department of Defence and the US intelligence community. He served as facilitator of the first-ever financial war games conducted by the Pentagon.

A Phenomenal Read To Prepare Us For The Rough Times Ahead
By Ollie Winslow
Wow! Another must-read from James Rickards. I'm a HUGE fan of his work and this did not disappoint. It is an informative, thought-provoking book that warns readers of the impending financial crisis. I didn't think a book could be better than Currency Wars and I am so happy to be proven wrong.

Add this book to your cart immediately, you will not be disappointed!

A Very Important Book
By Mahatma Kote
As an economist and financial adviser, I was prepared to be highly critical of James Rickards' latest book. Instead, I found myself annotating it heavily and reread it immediately after finishing it. There may be a little more detail in some parts than the explication really needed, but I found myself nodding in agreement rather than shaking my head. It's not a conspiratorial book (as some reviewers have alleged). Rickards speaks of "elites," but as an amorphous group bound together by shared goals rather than as a dark organization dedicated to evil. His analysis of the Long Term Capital Management (LTCM) debacle is fascinating, since he was working there at the time. His discussion of complexity theory applied to financial markets is the best I've seen on the topic. His discussion of trade issues is particularly timely due to the recent presidential election.

The typical free trade policies have led to the gutting of US manufacturing, and the loss of the jobs on which the middle class used to depend. (Remember that working class white voters used to be the backbone of the Democratic Party!) If President Trump can shift our trade policies so that a certain amount of manufacturing returns to the US, he will have done generations of Americans a great favor. Rickards shows how so-called "free" trade really isn't free.

By far the most important part of the book is the case it makes for a coming financial panic. Rickards does not identify the precise cause, although he does say that the cause will be a liquidity crisis in one part of the financial market, which will spread to all other parts. He does lay out the reasons why he feels that such a crisis, exponentially larger than previous ones, is almost inevitable at this point. There is some general advice on tactics to protect yourself during such an event -- a process, really, since it would take years to work itself out. Other forms of self-protection are easily inferred from the analysis. All in all, I believe this is one of the most important financial books in years.

Essential Reading to Prepare for What is Next
By Kevin Massengill
I have been a fan of all of Rickards' books but Road to Ruin is his best yet. The blend of history, personalities and deep insight into the thinking of the self proclaimed elites is a fascinating and timely read. Cannot recommend more highly!

Era of bad feelings and good results.
By Richard I. Pervo
in 1789 the U.S. was anarchic and in financial difficulty. How the new constitution would work and if it would survive were far from certain. M. ably tells the story of how the country was formed. Fortunately, the Federalists pushed for a strong central government. Hamilton was, of course, the leading proponent of ideas. As an organizer and plotter he was extremely inept. The book allows the author the leisure to describe those early developments in detail.
among the details is the unfettered vitriol of the press. there were two fox news channels, one for each of the emerging parties. neither valued truth or even its most distant relatives.
the growth of parties was a major factor in improving voter turnout, which was low.
The Federalists turned the paper constitution into a manageable system--and then expired from their own elitism. We can, however, be glad that they had their day. Amateur historians who wish to understand U.S. history will benefit from this book.
