About the Author
Scott J. Myers-Lipton, Professor of Sociology at San Jose State University, is the author of Rebuild America: Solving the Economic Crisis through Civic Works and Social Solutions to Poverty: America's Struggle to Build a Just Society, as well as numerous scholarly articles. He founded the successful effort to raise the minimum wage in San Jose´ from $8 to $10, and the Gulf Coast Civic Works Campaign, an initiative to develop 100,000 prevailing wage jobs for local and displaced workers after Hurricane Katrina. He has worked to help students develop solutions to poverty by taking them to live at homeless shelters, the Navajo and Lakota nations, the US Gulf Coast, and Kingston, Jamaica.

Ending Extreme Inequality: An Economic Bill of Rights, by DR, Scott Myers-Lipton, is a data driven evidential account of the United States, regarding the failed policies from the infancy of the U.S. to present. DR, Myers-Lipton has distilled the facts surrounding the institutionalized discrimination of the poor and the working class over the last 250 years into a page turning engaging read. The book focuses on concrete workable solutions moving forward that would provide both the poor and the working class, as well as people of color, access to a living wage job, affordable housing, a good education, quality healthcare, security for the aging U.S. population. The underlying theme stresses job creation based on the U.S. model of capitalism and the privates sector inability to create sufficient living wage jobs. This book illustrates in depth how the U.S. is number one in inequality compared to the top 25 wealthiest nations in the world. He argues that the current distribution of wealth inequality is corrosive for the U.S. I highly recommend this read, because it will leave you with a sense of just how lopsided our nation has become in terms of equality and living a decent life for all U.S. citizens.

Great ideas. Great history. Great facts. Scott Myers-Lipton shows us that people have been working to make the right to a job, a living wage, a decent home, good education, adequate medical care and protection against old age and sickness into universal rights. He also shows us ways these can become real.
This book provides us a list of all the necessary ingredients for real economic justice. While it is still up to us to organize, educate, litigate, legislate, and take direct action to turn them into reality, this books gives us the intellectual basis.
Most everyone believes that every person who wants to work deserves a chance to do so. And most people also agree that people who work full-time should not be poor. But how do these hopes turn into reality? This book provides answers and guidance for these and many more challenges.
People working for and studying social change have to look at this book. It provides a solid foundation for so much of our work.

Scott Myers-Lipton reminds us of our personal responsibility in ENDING EXTREME INEQUALITY

Today there is so much focus on the problems of the day and nothing else. There is finger-pointing when it comes to who is doing something wrong, but there is not enough accountability or focus on what can be done to make things right.

In his book ENDING EXTREME INEQUALITY Scott Myers-Lipton tackles not just the problems, but allows the reader to see what the solution is and how we can get there.

It's interesting the way he has tackled the Bill of Rights and made it something real for people to be able to discuss and digest. So many times that is exactly what is missing: a clear understanding of where we are and how we can move forward. Scott makes it clear though that the work is not easy. You have to be willing to roll up your sleeves and do what is necessary, but if you do then you'll see things change for the better.

 Most textbooks that I have read or used use the terms “learning objective”.  While there is nothing wrong with this, I feel that the author of this book personalizes the issue of learning for the reader.

 

The “Did You Know” opener-- Fun, interesting facts that draw the reader into the chapter.  You are not starting off with somewhat dry, hard to read material that tends to turn readers off.   The writing style —very readable, flows nicely, comprehensive content.   …..much better because of the specific examples used and the strong patho throughout the chapter.   The content, even from the objectives, has a positive, health promotion focus   NCLEX questions — variety, simplicity and clarity in content and format

About the Author

Sheila Tucker

Sheila Buckley Tucker graduated with a B.S. in Food and Nutrition and an M.A. in Healthcare Administration from Framingham State College in Massachusetts. She is board certified in sports nutrition from the American Dietetic Association. As a registered dietitian for over twenty-five years, Sheila has provided clinical nutrition care to patients and clients in a variety of settings, including as an in-patient clinical dietitian specializing in critical care, nutrition support, renal nutrition, cancer care, and medical/surgical care. She has also provided nutrition education as a consultant to corporate wellness programs and area colleges. She has over twenty years of teaching experience at the undergraduate and graduate level in several Boston area colleges and nursing schools. At Boston College, Sheila combines an on-campus clinical nutrition practice, specializing in both sports nutrition and disordered eating, with teaching nutrition in the Connell School of Nursing. She is a contributing author to many nursing textbooks.

 

Vera Dauffenbach

Vera Dauffenbach, EdD, MSN, RN, has a bachelor’s degree from Macalester College and a master’s degree in nursing from Pace University. Her doctorate in educational leadership is from Western Michigan University.  She has been a faculty member in the baccalaureate nursing programs at Grand View College in Des Moines and Maryville College (now University) in St. Louis.  At present, she is an associate professor and director of the graduate program at Bellin College in Green Bay, Wisconsin.  She has broad classroom and clinical teaching experience on all levels of the undergraduate curriculum, with a special interest in nutrition and pediatrics.  At the graduate level, she teaches courses in nursing theory and leadership.  Her research interests relate to critical thinking and leadership development.  She has contributed extensive NCLEX-style test questions for nursing textbooks.  She is a past board member of the Wisconsin League for Nursing and president of Kappa Pi-at-Large Chapter of Sigma Theta Tau International.

Not necessarily your 'curl up and read a good book,' book, but, it's required reading, has some useful information & explanations.

This book is great. It was changed this semester from the book they had last semester and it is a wya better book. The chapters are easy to read and it applies to the nursing major, rather than a normal nutrition book for anyone.

Ok so I have to be honest about this one. I requested it on the basis of the blurb before I had read book 1. After finishing book 1, I didn’t really care for this series (mostly because of the horrendous editing) or care for the MC (because he was portrayed as a complete ass in the first book). But, I had already requested it and there was a small part of me that hoped, for the author’s sake, that this one turned out better than the first.

I am happy to say that Book 2 in this series was a better showing than the first. There were still some proofreading errors, but the language was not as childish and repetitive. I could tell that at least some form of editing had been attempted on this story.

I am also happy to say that book two pulled me into this series where the first book did not. Unfortunately, it was not because of the MCs in this one, but the promise of future MCs that accomplished this task. The author did a great job hinting at what is to come in such a way that I want it now! I am interested in the potential of that promised relationship.

I ended this one understanding Volt a bit better. The author gave the reader a glimpse into his past and created a plotline that allowed him to redeem himself and become Heath’s hero. All these things softened my opinion of him. However, I still did not really “like” Volt. There was very little information given as to why he was always so mean and why he just took control of Heath’s life, assuming he knew what Heath wanted. I think I felt this way, because the author chose to attribute all romantic development to the history between these two characters. Yet she failed to adequately display that history in a way that made me understand why Heath allowed Volt to treat him like crap for so long and then instantly forgive him once Volt takes control in the bedroom (this is where the “BDSM” came into play, though it was mostly some power displays, name calling, and spanking). I just felt like there was too much focus on sex and not enough focus on relationship or character growth. It was almost as if this story was a basis for something longer, and the details necessary to fill in the developmental gaps remained unfinished.

Overall, I liked this one better than book one. There were still editing issues and a few flaws in the story execution, but the author was able to keep me reading until the end and she has me wanting the next book in the series. I am glad I gave this one a shot, and am so happy to see that the editors worked to allow the author’s talent to show a bit more than in book 1.

High Voltage is the second book in the Havoc’s Crew series by author Angelique Voisen. I will say this book is a letdown compared to the first book. Maybe I was expecting more, but this seemed to lack the fire and soul the first book had. However I know that sounds like I hated it, I didn’t, I just felt let down is all.
Volt is a great character. He conjured a demon when he was a kid. He couldn’t control said demon and it cost him his best friend’s life. This scarred Volt. He is scared to find love again because the demon is still on the loose. Havoc took him in changed his life, but he cannot let go of that fear.
Heath now Heath I adored. He is funny, kind, and just who Volt needs. The light to his darkness. He is getting tired of Volt not letting him in. He actually tries to leave his teacher. But can Volt let him go is the question.
This has some great characters. Lots of friendships and world building in this book. I would suggest reading these books in order they do build on each other. If you love this series I think you would love this book too. For me the first book had better writing and more connection but this book does a great job of moving us along and building friendships.

About the Author

Pascal Baudar is a professional forager, wild food instructor, and a self-styled “culinary alchemist” based in Los Angeles. His locally sourced wild ingredients and unique preserves have made their way into the kitchens of such star chefs as Ludo Lefebvre, Josiah Citrin, Ari Taymor, Michael Voltaggio, and Chris Jacobson.

Over the years, through his weekly classes and seminars, he has introduced thousands of home cooks, local chefs, and others to the flavors offered by the wild terroir of southern California.

He has served as a wild food consultant for several TV shows including MasterChef and Top Chef Duels. He has been featured in numerous TV shows and publications, including Time magazine, the Los Angeles Times, L.A. Weekly, and the New York Times.

In 2014, he was named one of the 25 most influential tastemakers in L.A. by Los Angeles magazine.

A well-considered review

The anti-foraging viewpoint is based on the belief that foraging can strip ecosystems of important foods for wildlife. One can extrapolate that this viewpoint is meant to protect and preserve the environment.
In my review, I would like to address whether the negative reviews of others based solely on an anti-foraging viewpoint are warranted, and, as a larger point, to discuss whether this viewpoint, expressed by negatively reviewing this book solely based on its overall topic, helps or harms the environment.
I have thoroughly read every page of this book, shared it with my children, and made several recipes, some many times. I believe that environmentally conscious people should support this book because:
1. The author dedicates a section to foraging responsibly. He writes about his sadness at seeing denuded plants after restaurant suppliers have unethically sourced an ingredient. He encourages readers to consider the impact before foraging.
2. Many of the negative reviews encourage people to plant gardens rather than forage. The author writes that he plants his favorite food sources, and he encourages readers to do the same.
3. Foraging leads to an increased desire to protect the environment because humans are primed to enjoy 'hunting' in changing environments and they create strong memories based on food.
4. Once you get hooked on wild plants, you'll want to create space for them everywhere. Suddenly it's perfectly logical to want to rip out your water-hogging grass lawn and replace it with wild mint.
5. Some ideas in this book have no impact on animal life. For example, I learned to make my own sea salt. I like the taste so much I doubt I'll ever buy salt again. No birds or insects were impacted by my salt, and one less product is being manufactured and shipped for me.
5. Many ideas in this book are from plant material that is not scarce. I learned to make pine needle tea, and no one is going to miss the pine needles I took because there are so many. I began cooking and making fertilizer with local seaweed, which piles up and rots on our beaches. I also learned to eat every part of the nopales, which is also so plentiful here that huge patches rot unused in the fall.
6. The author advocates eating insects as a source of protein and heme iron. You can't get more local or sustainable than that.
7. The author advocates using rocks as plates and cooking tools - which removes even more products from the product stream, further benefitting the environment.

I could continue, but I believe I've shown that the author is in fact very concerned with ethical foraging, and also that ethical foraging can result in environmental benefits.

this creation brought the author in direct contact with Nature and it evidently made an indelible mark on him

Although The New Wildcrafted Cuisine is an exceptionally beautiful presentation of an exploration into the natural world for unique culinary delights, it is also a primary account of one's creative interrelationship with the plants of one's bioregion. This work goes beyond any previous wild plant foraging guide or wild food cookbook not only as a 'next step', but by leaps and bounds. The spirit of this book is conveyed through its unique interpretations of the author's local flora creating through the ancient principles of food alchemy and preservation and an intimacy developed with Place. As a bioregional herbalist and forager, I feel this is not only essential to deeper understanding of plants, but is inevitable in our return to the "Eden" of our home landscape. Further, I feel that one cannot begin to comprehend "stewardship" of the landscape short of participating in it. What I call the "Museumification" of our landscape in which people presumably "Leave No Trace" (how is that physically possible? It simply is not) and view Nature from afar essentially prevents us from fully participating in the life around us in a way that cannot be conveyed through words, guidebooks, or university courses. I can see that the work behind this creation brought the author in direct contact with Nature and it evidently made an indelible mark on him and his life's work. Responsible action is assured for all those who develop intimate relationship with their homeland. Allowing for mistakes, we must each follow our calling down this path and bring this enhanced awareness back to our community through our work. I personally have not met a forager who has clear-cut a forest for timber, or bladed desert for a new road or new development, or sprayed toxic chemicals across 1,000's of acres of our national forest to eradicate undesirable plants. Yet each day these activities continue on, sanctioned, and "in our best interest." The modern forager, in best practices, is seeking to re-establish harmonious relationship with her surroundings. This book does that, ambitiously.
Instead of scorn for an irresponsible endeavor, I see light in a direction of responsible interrelationship with our natural environment when I read through The New Wildcrafted Cuisine. A work unlike any other. A work I would like to create some day, emerging from my own terrain.

A Locavore's Alchemy

Be not under any illusion that this is a foragers hand book and field guide. I suggest that for that purpose you should research and locate a guide book quite specific to your area and for those in Australia I would recommend "The Weed Foragers Handbook" by Adam Grubb and Annie Raser-Rowland as a good starting place and there are many more of course.
Rather, this book inspires the cook, passionate in seasonal local fare, to take a more personal and profound journey. The powerful evocative qualities of aromatics a just as key as the taste sensations.This book has quite opened my eyes to the tiny, tiny ingredients, like lerp sugar in these cookies. Or how about pine pollen and seeds from mustard and dock? Lots of ferments, shrubs, pickling, brews and extractions.Seed sensations, powders, rubs, smokes and even goat cheese made with fig sap as rennet.

What I particularly appreciate about this book is the way it is sectioned into seasons.

WINTER; The forest time
SPRING: The green time
SUMMER: The berries and fruits time
FALL/AUTUMN: The seeds time

Each section explores the various ingredients of the time and recipes are included and techniques explained. There is also quite a lot of thumbnail pictures in each section visually identifying what is commonly seen in the landscape (of Southern California of course). While some are area specific I have been delighted to find many cross overs. Would I make half of what's in this book? Unlikely, but it's definitely got me excited and thinking further afield and asking myself how will explore and expand my local produce. Shibu has over nine years of hands-on experience in the Embedded & Real Time System domain with solid background on all phases of Embedded Product Development Life Cycle. He holds a B-Tech Degree (Hons) in Instrumentation & Control Engineering from the University of Calicut. He has conducted research activities in the embedded domain for Contactless Smart Card Technology and Radio Frequency Identifi cation (RFID). He has developed a variety of products in the Contactless Smart Card & RFID Technology platform using industry's most popular 8-bit microcontroller-8051. Shibu has sound working knowledge in Embedded Hardware development using EDA Tools and firmware development in Assembly Language and Embedded C using a variety of IDEs and crosscompilers for various 8/16/32 bit microprocessors/microcontrollers and System on Chips. He is also an expert in RTOS based Embedded System design for various RTOSs including Windows CE, VxWorks, MicroC/OS-II and RTX-51. Inspirational, excellent for beginners

I think this is excellent book for beginners, beautifully printed and very inspiring. But if you already have some experience in terraring, you may want to look for another book, this one covers the very basics.

I knew absolutely nothing about moss terrariums and now I have 5 little wonders which I created after reading this book. One is going to be a birthday present for my friend, very inexpensive but extremely attractive - you can't even tell I've spent $12 on it! It really looks like $100 :)

The only thing which deserves a star down is the fact authors didn't focus on figures much and didn't provide really good source where we can get them - which are, in my opinion, play very important role in designing the whole thing. That was those funny figures which made me buy this book, and inside I haven't found the answer where to get those and what to look for. The webstore they refer to doesn't offer anything like pictured in the book. I started to research this subject and found HobbyLinc which offers plenty of the figures in every poses imaginable. So if you are like me and want to create terrarium with good figures, look for railroad modeller's stuff. The brands which offer good figures are Noch, Preiser, Faller, Woodland Scenics.

Authors also do not cover the scales of figures needed, so I was confused and ordered the wrong size first. Later I realized that figures in HO size/scale work best, but for smaller terrariums you may want to get even smaller sizes.

I have also found out that moss doesn't like lime, and if you spray terrarium with lime-containing tap water, it may die. I am not sure if authors cover that thing in the book, so be careful. Some people suggest using rain water for moss.

All in all, I wouldn't rate the book 4 stars just because of the figures, but since it's titled "Tiny world", I think it's crucial to provide sources where to get the tiny things and educate readers about figure's scales. I had to make my own research.

A little bit of green for those without a garden

I've always loved plants. Gardens. Forests. Parks. The problem was; although I wanted, no needed, to have more green things on my life; I didn't have the space or the funding to actually create a plant-filled space for myself. I may have not been exactly blessed with a green thumb either.
I decided to try a new approach to "indoor gardening" and bought Tiny World Terrariums. Filled with great ideas, easy to follow instructions, and wonderful care tips; I finally have been able to create my own terrarium. And it's not dying. Hooray!
The part about this book that makes it more than just a terrarium how-to guide is how the authors have literally created their own miniature plant-filled worlds. Their terrarium illustrations show beautiful small scale scenes complete with tiny animals and people. And then they provide step by step instructions on how to recreate them! The creations are truly beautiful and completely elevate the idea of crafting a terrarium to so much more than just putting plants under glass.
I highly recommend this book: not only is it quite informative, but inspiring as well.

All You Need to Create Your Own Tiny World

I've been talking about creating a terrarium for months now and was over the moon when my sister surprised me with this book. I had looked at some online guides and flipped through other books about getting started but was a little bit intimidated -- it seemed like this might really be HARD. This book resolved that fear entirely. The authors really break down the projects into simple, easy to follow instructions. The pictures are lovely and inspiring but what really made me happy was how detailed and richly imagined the "tiny worlds" were. Some of the other guides I've seen covered the basic "how to" stuff but left out the details that truly personalize your project and make the finished product shine. If you're looking for fresh ideas on containers, super actionable instructions and thoughtful suggestions for making your terrarium come alive, this is the book for you.
