Apprentice in Death, by J.D. Robb

Lieutenant Eve Dallas returns in a fast-paced new novel from #1 New York Times bestselling author J. D. Robb.

Nature versus nurture...

The shots came quickly, silently, and with deadly accuracy. Within seconds, three people were dead at Central Park’s ice-skating rink. The victims: a talented young skater, a doctor, and a teacher. As random as random can be.

Eve Dallas has seen a lot of killers during her time with the NYPSD but never one like this. A review of the security videos reveals that the victims were killed with a tactical laser rifle fired by a sniper, who could have been miles away when the trigger was pulled. And though the list of locations where the shooter could have set up seems endless, the number of people with that particular skill set is finite: police, military, professional killer.

Eve’s husband, Roarke, has unlimited resources—and genius—at his disposal. And when his computer program leads Eve to the location of the sniper, she learns a shocking fact: There were two—one older, one younger. Someone is being trained by an expert in the science of killing, and they have an agenda. Central Park was just a warm-up. And as another sniper attack shakes the city to its core, Eve realizes that though we’re all shaped by the people around us, there are those who are just born evil...

When Lieutenant Eve Dallas strode into the bullpen of Homicide after an annoying appearance in court, she wanted coffee. But Detective Jenkinson had obviously been lying in wait. He popped up from his desk, started toward her, leading with his obnoxious tie of the day.

“Are those frogs?” she demanded. “Why would you wear a tie with piss-yellow frogs jumping around on—Christ—puke-green lily pads?”

“Frogs are good luck. It’s feng shui or some shit. Anyways, the fresh meat you brought in took a pop in the eye from some chemi-head down on Avenue B. She and Uniform Carmichael hauled him and the dealer in. They’re in the tank. New girl’s in the break room with an ice patch. Figured you’d want to know.”

Fresh meat equaled the newly transferred Officer Shelby. “How’d she handle it?”

“Like a cop. She’s all right, LT.”

“Good to know.”

She really wanted coffee—and not crap break-room coffee, but the real coffee in her office AutoChef. But she’d brought Officer Shelby on board, and on her first full day she’d taken a fist in the eye.

So Eve, tall and lanky in her black leather coat, walked to the break room.

Inside, Shelby sat drinking crap coffee, squinting at her PPC while wearing a cold patch over her right eye. She started to get to her feet, but Eve gestured her down.

“How’s the eye, Officer?”

“My kid sister hits harder, Lieutenant.”

At Eve’s finger motion, Shelby lifted the patch.

The bloodshot white, the black and purple raying out from it had Eve nodding. “That’s a nice one. Stick with the patch awhile.”

“Yes, sir.”

“Good work.”

“Thank you, sir.”

On the way to her office, she stopped by Uniform Carmichael’s cube. “Run it through for me.”

“Detectives Carmichael and Santiago caught one down on Avenue B. We’re support, just crowd control. We spot the illegals deal going down, five feet away. Can’t just ignore it, but since we’ve got a body coming out, we’re just going to move them along. Dealer? He’s hands up, no problem. Chemi-head’s jonesing some, and he just punched her. Sucker punch, sir. She took him down, and fast, I’ll give her that. A little bit on the reckless side, maybe, but it’s her eye his fist punched. We hauled them both in, with assaulting an officer added to the doper.

“She can take a punch,” Uniform Carmichael added. “I’ll give her that, too.”

“Keep her tight for a few days, and let’s see how she rolls.”

Before somebody else wanted her for anything else, Eve cut straight through to her office. She programmed coffee, black, without bothering to take off her coat.

She stood by her skinny window drinking the coffee, her whiskey-colored cop’s eyes scanning the street traffic below, the sky traffic above.

She had paperwork—there was always paperwork—and she’d get to it. But she had just closed an ugly case, and had spent the morning testifying over another ugly case. She supposed they were all ugly, but some twisted harder than others.

So she wanted a minute with her coffee and the city she’d sworn to protect and serve.

Maybe, if she was lucky, a quiet night would follow. Just her and Roarke, she thought. Some wine, some dinner, maybe a vid, some sex. When a murder cop ended up with a busy, billionaire businessman, quiet nights at home were like the biggest, shiniest prize in the box.

Thank God he wanted those quiet nights, too.

Maybe sometimes they did the fancy bits—it was part of the deal, part of the Marriage Rules in her book. And more than sometimes he worked with her over pizza in her home office. The reformed criminal with the mind of a cop? A hell of a tool.

So maybe a quiet night for both of them.

She set the coffee on her desk, took off her coat and tossed it over her deliberately uncomfortable visitor’s chair. Paperwork, she reminded herself, and started to rake her hand through her hair. Hit the snowflake hat she tried not to let embarrass her. After tossing that on top of the coat, she finger-combed her short, choppy cap of brown hair, sat.

“Computer,” she began, and her desk ’link sounded.

“Dallas.”

“Dispatch, Dallas, Lieutenant Eve.”

Even before the rest, she knew the shiny prize would have to stay in the box for a while.

With her partner, Eve walked from Sixth Avenue where she’d double-parked her DLE.

With a scarf of purple-and-green zigzags wrapped around her neck, Peabody clomped along the path, shooting unhappy looks at the snow blanketing everything else.

“I figured, hey, we’ll be in court, and we got temps in the forties, I can wear my cowgirl boots no problem. If we’ve got to go tramping through the snow—”

“It’s January. And what cop wears pink to a murder trial?”

“Reo had on red shoes,” Peabody pointed out, referring to the APA. “Red’s just dark pink when you think about it.”

When Eve thought about it, she wondered why the hell they were talking about footwear when they had three DBs on tap. “Suck it up.”

She flashed her badge when they came to the first police line, kept walking—ignored reporters who pushed against that line and shouted questions.

Somebody had their head on right, she decided, holding the media hounds back out of sight of the rink. That wouldn’t last, but it kept what was bound to be complicated a little simpler for the time being.

She spotted more than a dozen uniforms coming or going and at least fifty civilians. Raised voices, a few edged with hysteria, carried clearly.

“I thought we’d have more civilians, more witnesses.”

Eve kept scanning. “Bodies drop, people run. We probably lost half of them before the first-on-scene got here.” She shook her head. “Media doesn’t need to get within camera range. They’re going to have dozens of people sending them vids.”

Since nothing could be done about that, Eve set it aside, flashed through the next barricade.

As she did, a uniform peeled off, lumbered toward her. She recognized the thirty-plus-years vet, and knew the relative order established was due to his experience and no-bullshit style.

“Fericke.”

He gave her a nod. He had a dark bulldog face on a broad-chested bulldog body. And eyes of bitter chocolate-brown that had seen it all, and expected to see worse at any moment.

“Hell of a mess.”

“Run it through for me.”

“Got the first dispatch at ’round fifteen-twenty. I’m baby-walking a rook, and had him doing some foot patrol on Sixth, so we hotfooted it. Had him start a line back aways, keep people out. But Christ on a crutch, you can’t block the whole freaking park.”

“You’re first-on-scene.”

“Yeah. Nine-one-ones started pumping in and so did cops, but people were already running from the scene when I got here. Had to work with park security to hold what we could. Had some injuries. We got MTs in to treat the minors, but we had a kid, about six, broken leg. The way the wit reports shake out—once you cut through the crap—is the first vic collided with him and the kid’s parents, and the kid’s leg got broke in the fall. Got their contact info, and the hospital for you.”

“Peabody.”

“I’ll take that information, Officer.”

He reeled it off without pulling out his notebook.

“Sweepers aren’t going to be happy about the state of the crime scene. People all the fuck over it, and the bodies’ve been moved around. Had a medical on the ice, and a vet—an animal doc—and they worked on the vics, and the injured.

“First vic took it in the back. That’s the female out there, in red.” He turned, gestured with a lift of that bulldog chin. “Wit statements aren’t clear about which got hit second, but you got two males, one gut shot, one between the fucking eyes. Looks like a laser strike to me, LT, but I don’t wanna tell you your job. And you’re going to hear from some of these wits about knives and suspicious individuals, and the usual crap.”

You didn’t make lieutenant without wading through, and learning to cut through, the usual crap.

“All right. You got the doctors on tap?”

“Yeah. Got them inside the locker room, got another couple in there, too, who claim they were the first to reach one of the male vics. And the wife of one of the male vics. She’s firm he was the last hit, and I lean toward that.”

“Peabody, take them, and I’ll start on the bodies. I want the security discs, and I want them now.”

“They got them ready for you,” Fericke told her. “Ask for Spicher. He’s rink security, and not altogether a dickhead.”

“I’m on it.” Peabody headed off, careful to avoid the snow.

“Gonna want some grippers for your boots,” Fericke told Eve. “Pile of them up there. Hotshot murder cop face-planting on the ice wouldn’t inspire confidence.”

“Hold the line, Fericke.”

“It’s what we do.”

She walked around to the rink’s entrance, strapping on a pair of the toothy grips before opening her field kit and sealing her hands and boots.

“Hey! Hey! Are you in charge? Who’s in fucking charge?”

She glanced over, locking eyes with a red-faced man of about forty who was wearing a thick white sweater and black skin pants.

“I’m in charge.”

“You have no right to hold me! I have an appointment.”

“Mister . . .”

“Granger. Wayne Granger, and I know my rights!”

“Mr. Granger, do you see the three people lying on the rink?”

“Of course I see them.”

“Their rights trump yours.”

He shouted after her as she worked her way across the ice to the female victim, something about police states and lawsuits. Looking down at the girl in red—couldn’t have been more than twenty years old—Eve didn’t give him another thought.

Blood pooled under her, spreading more red on the ice. She lay on her side, and Eve could clearly see bloody marks where other skaters, and the medicals, had gone through.

Her eyes, a bright, summer blue already glazed with death, stared, and one hand lay, palm up, in her own blood.

No, Eve didn’t give Granger and his appointment another thought.

She crouched down, opening her field kit, and did her job.

She didn’t rise or turn when Peabody came out.

“Vic is Ellissa Wyman, age nineteen. Still lives with her parents and younger sister, Upper West. TOD, fifteen-fifteen. ME will determine COD, but I agree with Fericke. It looks like a laser strike.”

“The doctors—both of them—agree. And the vet? He was an Army corpsman, so he’s seen laser strikes. They didn’t do more than look at her—she was obviously gone. One tried working on the gut shot, and the other examined the head shot—but they were all gone. So they focused on the injured.”

Eve rose with a nod. “Security discs.”

“Right here.”

Eve plugged one of the discs into her own PPC, cued it to fifteen-fourteen, and focused first on the girl in red.

“She’s good,” Peabody commented. “Her form, I mean. She’s building up some speed there, and—”

She broke off when the girl shot through the air, form gone, and collided with the young family.

Eve rewound it, backed up another minute, and now scanned the other skaters, the onlookers.

“People are giving her room,” Eve murmured, “some are watching her. I don’t see any weapons.”

She let it play through, watched the second victim jerk back, eyes widening, knees buckling.

Ran it back, noted the time. Ran it forward.

“Less than six seconds between strikes.”

People skated to the first vic and the family. Security came rushing out. And the couple skating—poorly—along the rail—slowed. The man glanced back. And the strike.

“Just over six seconds for the third. Three shots in roughly twelve seconds, three dead—center back, gut, forehead. That’s not luck. And none of those strikes came from the rink or around it. Tell Fericke, when he’s got all names and contacts, that anyone who has given a statement can go. Except for the medicals and the third vic’s wife.

“Get a full statement from all three of them, and contact whoever the vic’s wife wants. The female’s cleared for bagging, tagging, and transpo to the morgue. And we need park security feeds.”

“Which sector?”

“All of them.”

Leaving Peabody gaping, Eve crossed the ice to the second victim.

When she finished with the bodies, she went inside.

The two medicals sat together on a bench in a locker area, drinking coffee out of go-cups.

Eve nodded to the uniform, dismissing her, then sat on the bench across from them. “I’m Lieutenant Dallas. You’ve given statements to my partner, Detective Peabody.”

They both nodded, the one on the left—trim, close-shaven, mid-thirties—nodded. “Nothing we could do for the three who were killed. By the time we got to them, they were gone.”

“Doctor?”

“Sorry. Dr. Lansing. I thought, I honestly thought the girl—the girl in the red suit—had just taken a bad spill. And the little boy, he was screaming. I was right there, that is, right behind them when it happened. So I tried to get to him, first. I started to move the girl, to get to the little boy, and realized she wasn’t hurt or unconscious. I heard Matt shouting for everyone to get off the ice, to get clear.”

“Matt.”

“That’s me. Matt Brolin. I saw the collision—saw that girl go into her turn for a jump, saw her propelled forward into the family. I was going to go help, then I saw the guy go down, saw him drop. Even then I didn’t put it together. But I saw the third one, I saw the strike, and I knew. I was a corpsman. Twenty-six years ago, but it doesn’t leave you. We were under attack, and I wanted people to get to cover.”

“You two know each other.”

“We do now,” Brolin said. “I knew the third guy was gone—hell of a sniper strike—but I tried to do what I could for the second one. He was still alive, Lieutenant. He looked at me. I remembered that look—and it’s a hard one to remember. He wasn’t going to make it, but you’ve got to do what you can do.”

“He shielded the guy with his own body,” Lansing put in. “People panicked, and I swear some would’ve skated right over that man, but Matt shielded him.”

“Jack had his hands full with the little boy, and the parents got banged around some, too. Right?”

“They didn’t have time to break their own fall,” Lansing explained. “The father’s got a mild concussion, the mother’s a sprained wrist. They’ll be all right. The boy, too, but he got the worst of it. Security had a first aid kit. I gave him a little something for the pain. The MTs were here inside of two minutes. You have to give them credit. I went to help Matt. And we had to try on the last one. But like Matt said, he was gone. Gone before he hit the ice.”

I loved it!
By Linda Krause
I have been reading this series since the first book. Each new book adds more dimension to the characters! I love that Roarke used the pink/purple to get Eve to think about new options for her home workspace. Turned out they are now also redoing the bedroom to make it theirs instead of just his design. Eve fascinates me! Her descriptions of small children just make me laugh! Her serious creeped out feelings over dolls having a place to gather and plot was classic! It has been a joy to watch Eve open up and see how she has gathered more friends than she knows what to do with. Was so scared that something had happened to Sommerset at Madison Square. Eve got him to stand for the living while she stood for the dead. Not certain what either Roarke or Eve would do without Sommerset. The snark when she comes home and dumps her jacket at the bottom of the stairs is totally an expectation now! I had pre-ordered this book and started/finished it the day it arrived! I look forward to each book! Seeing the characters grow and change has been a joy! These characters are like family now.....snowflake hat, magic coat, missing gloves, candy stash, Roarke supplied coffee, playing with her new home workstation and all!!!!!!! Can not wait for the next book!

Apprentice in Death
By Kimberly
It’s a race against time as Eve and her team track down a long-distance serial killer in Apprentice in Death. With no ties between the victims, no clues as to when or where the master-apprentice duo will strike next, and a vast number of potential targets in a city like New York, the tension is on high and Eve, Roarke, and company are running themselves ragged to take down the killer.

The In Death series can be generally divided between character-centric stories and case-centric ones. Apprentice in Death is the latter, but even though my preference is for books with character growth, I ended up loving this case. It was fascinating to watch the pieces of the puzzle come together, and the more layers that were revealed about the stone-cold killer’s character the more my interested was piqued. The sheer number of potential victims weighs on Eve and her team heavily, and it also added a tenseness to the tale that kept me turning the pages of the book late into the night. It’s a twisted tale, though not in the usual sense; the apprentice is somewhat reminiscent of an earlier In Death killer (and I can’t reveal which character or the book they’re from without spoiling this story). Equally appealing is watching how Eve’s mind works as she makes the connections that will lead her to master and apprentice. While a number of faces old and new (Roarke in particular) are invaluable to solving this case, it’s Eve and the unique way she thinks that is the most fascinating to me.

The In Death books can largely be read as standalones, and Apprentice in Death is no exception. That being said, if this is your first foray into the series the mystery will still be appealing, but the small, personal moments in the book might not hold the appeal they do to readers more invested in the characters. And fans of the series, fear not: there are enough personal moments in this book to satisfy and perhaps even tug on your heartstrings a bit. The further into the series we get, the fewer opportunities for big personal drama there are, and that’s ok. The bonds of love and friendship still shine and added to my investment in the tale. All in all, I loved Apprentice in Death and I cannot wait to see what J.D. Robb has in store for Eve and Roarke!

Truly Disappointing to an "In Death" Fan
By T. Kuhn
I've read every "In Death" book, and have loved reading each one. Typically I read the new releases in one sitting, I just can't wait to see what Dallas and the gang are up to. I look forward to creative villains and plot twists. I love getting to know the primary characters more. I've reread every book at least once, and enjoy them every time.

It truly pains me to say that it took me almost a week to finish this one. The plot was predictable and moved slow, the characters were flat, and aside from the introduction of a new character (which I assume we will hear more about i future books), there was no character development. The writing itself was good, and maybe if I had never read an In Death book I may have enjoyed this one more. I won't be re-reading this one.

This is gluten free?
By KC
I made the donuts pictured on the cover of this wonderful book and they were delicious. My friend came over with her daughter and she grabbed one and gobbled it up and said it was the best donut that she had ever had. She had no clue that they were gluten free! My teenage GF daughter, who has been craving donuts since going GF one year ago, was so happy! She smiled while she was eating them.

This book is unlike other GF cookbooks. There are weekday timesavers which is what I need during my crazy weeks. I love that I can make yeasted pizza dough (in 3 minutes flat) and put it in the fridge to rise and be enjoyed during the week. Same with the refrigerated bread dough. I no longer have to wait for the rise to get the bread in the oven. I made bread dough on Sunday and I am making parmesan breadsticks with the dough tonight. There are plenty of yeast free breads/pizza recipes as well.

In addition, there are recipes to make your own "boxed cake" mixes ahead of time so all you need to do is grab the wet ingredients and start baking.

Nicole Hunn, through her blog and her cookbooks, is making my life easier (and more delicious) one recipe at a time!

EDITED TO ADD (07 NOV 2012): the parmesan bread sticks were so yummy!!!!!! Because I made the dough the night before, they took me 10 minutes to get in the oven. How cool is THAT??? One note with GF breads fresh out of the oven, you must let them cool first! I ate one right away and it was good, but the one I let cool for 10 mins (still warm) was FANTASTIC!

A Good gluten free cookbook for every day foods--with Update
By Phall0106
I really liked Nicole Hunn's first gluten-free cookbook (yep, I wrote a review for that one, too), and when I heard she had another cookbook out, I decided to get it as well.

These cookbooks are written in a very easy to understand manner, with fairly simple directions and lots of information to give you an ideas of why you're doing something, or what's really important. They're easy for the beginner cook or baker, as well as the person who has tried similar recipes with gluten filled foods (that would be me). When I first started out baking gluten free, I had NO IDEA what I was doing with different types of flours and what I needed to do to make some of the foods that I missed. The ingredients needed for these recipes are fairly easy to find--much can be ordered easily online (I order mine from Amazon), or found in most regular grocery stores. The recipes in this cookbook (and the first one) helped me develop some new skills working with gluten-free flours and getting back on the baking path.

There's no need to miss out on your favorite sweets and breads if you're gluten-free--just find a favorite recipe in this book and go from there.

Update, March 2013. I've now had this cookbook for several months and I've had an opportunity to try many things from it. First, the donuts (pictured on the front of the book) are evil in how delicious they are. I made a batch, ate half and took the remaining into work where they were tempted my co-workers to behave like animals in their quest to get to them. (And, no, I do not work in a zoo.) Second, the recipes I've tried are very easy, with good directions. I've even halved some of them and they've turned out well. This book was a good investment and if Ms. Hunn does a "Gluten Free on A Shoestring Recipes Forever" (or any other gluten free recipe book), I'll buy that one, too.

Wonderfuly Surprised
By Natalie
At first glance, I was a bit disappointed to see a bunch of recipes for meals with proteins as their main component. I know how to cook gluten free meat! LOL. But as I continued to look, I found so many exciting recipes I can't wait to try. There is a big section on making your own mixes. This is perfect for my family and we pre-make mixes for our pantry all the time. We were thrilled to see a GF cinnamon roll recipe and tried it out first thing. It did not disappoint. We have also tried the cake mixes and brownies and will shortly be trying them all. I will also be preordering Nicole's new baking book as well as her others. I am very pleased with her books. The recipes are EASY and straightforward. A wonderful surprise!

Translated Woman: Crossing the Border with Esperanza's Story, by Ruth Behar

Translated Woman tells the story of an unforgettable encounter between Ruth Behar, a Cuban-American feminist anthropologist, and Esperanza Hernández, a Mexican street peddler. The tale of Esperanza's extraordinary life yields unexpected and profound reflections on the mutual desires that bind together anthropologists and their "subjects."

Amazon.com Review
When Cuban American anthropologist Ruth Behar tried to piece together the lives led by women in one Mexican village, she didn't reckon on the stubborn magnetism of Esperanza, who "seemed determined to push her story into my hands and stuff it into my ears, so I could take it back across the border." Translated Woman is a giddy rush of dramatic words from Esperanza herself talking late into the night about the hardships and triumphs of her life. Having barely fled the wrath of her drunken father, she takes up with a philandering wife-beater who keeps her in the Mexican version of purdah, complete with a scolding mother-in-law. Looming starvation and the loss of child after child, which she ascribes to the coraje (rage) her worthless husband riles up in her breast, impels her to leave him. Gradually she carves out enough work as a street peddler to support herself and her children. Great turns of phrase from Behar and Esperanza enliven this unusual account. Skirting volatile feuds between neighbors, Behar worries lest her research get mired in "a nest of old hatreds." Says Esperanza of being penniless, "I almost had to use one hand to cover my front and another hand to cover my back."

From Publishers Weekly
In 1985 Behar, a feminist anthropologist working in Mexico, befriended street peddler Esperanza Hernandez, an Indian rumored to be a witch--townspeople claimed she used black magic to blind her ex-husband after he had regularly battered her and then left her for his mistress. In Behar's novelistic telling of Esperanza's life story, we meet a macha woman whose arrogance alienated her own mother, and whom Behar implausibly casts as a feminist heroine. Esperanza, who found redemption in a spiritist cult built around Pancho Villa, blames her pent-up rage for the deaths in infancy of the first six of her 12 children. She beat up her husband's lover and threw one of her sons out of the household; she also beat a daughter for refusing to support her and disowned another son for having what she considered an incestuous affair with his uncle's ex-mistress. Behar, who teaches at the University of Michigan, strains to find parallels between her own experience as a Cuban immigrant and that of her bellicose subject. Photos.

From Library Journal
A 1988 MacArthur award winner, anthropologist Behar has worked in Mexico since 1982. Translated Woman is the story of Esperanza, a middle-aged Mexican street peddler. Behar edited her conversations with Esperanza to create a personal narrative incorporating her feminist interpretation of this working-class woman's life. Especially interesting is Esperanza's participation in a spiritualist ritual centering on Pancho Villa. Behar also discusses her relationship with Esperanza in terms of class, ethnic, and national barriers. She concludes with a chapter on her own life and career; her discussion of her ethnicity and the status of Latinas in general is excellent. Recommended for most libraries.

Esperanza Shines, Ruth Reflects
By Bob Newman
Esperanza, a poor Mexican street peddlar, is befriended by Ruth, an American anthropologist with Cuban-Jewish roots during the course of Ruths fieldwork in Mexico. They become friends, comadres, and Ruth decides to tell Esperanzas story. Questions arise. Why does Esperanza want to tell Ruth the whole story of her life ? Why does Ruth decide to record it? In what format will Ruth present that story so that North American readers can understand it ? How will Ruth place that story into the framework of the anthropological profession or into the feminist discourse ? Does she have to do that in a traditional way ? Does Ruth have the right to Esperanza's story ? Is she exploiting Esperanza, who, after all, can never come to the USA in person except, in the most unlikely of circumstances, as a servant ? (Ruth can drive down to Mexico more or less at will.) Yes, of course it is Ruth who poses all these questions and then answers them.
The result of these questions is a very interesting and iconoclastic book, which, though at times difficult to read, clearly raises many questions. TRANSLATED WOMAN might be called the archetype of a modern anthropological creation because 1) the author does not hide behind the curtains, but places herself in the center along with the subject and 2)like current Anthropology as a field, it is so full of self-doubt, both personal and professional, that a reader perceives more questions than answers, the main one being, if Ruth were so full of guilt and indecision about the merits of such a study, why didnt she just drop it ? I, for one, thought that if she felt it were wrong, then she shouldnt have continued, but if she did continue, then hand-wringing and meek self-castigating sentences were unnecessary. Nearly every interaction in our world has either class, race, or sexual components. Are we to refrain from communicating with all but our class, racial, or sexual doubles unless we worry that we are abusing some kind of power ? Exploitation exists, many anthropologists have severely exploited their subjects (as have people of every kind) but it does not follow that all relationships across cultures, from rich to poor society, are therefore exploitative. Common humanity is what counts the most between individuals. The USA certainly exploits Mexico, but that does not make Ruth Behar an exploiter. Collective guilt ? I thought wed seen the end of that, at least in anthropological circles. With a strong, independent woman like Esperanza, it is very unlikely she would have pursued the connection if she did not feel she also benefitted from it. Ruth, however, persisted in swimming in the pool of uncertainty. She faulted herself for driving to poor Mexquitic village in a new car and then worrying about possible damage. She dressed inappropriately as she accompanied her comadre around the streets and bemoaned her incongruity. She notes how intrusive her photography must have been, but she took the photos. She shopped in expensive stores that her neighbors could never afford and then agonized. Why ? Either you drop the guilt or you dont do these things. My guilty gringa thoughts indeed ! You have to be the person you can live with. These are some things that irritated and puzzled me in what, nevertheless, is a fine book---more than that, a REALLY fine book, which translates autobiography into anthropology, anthropology into literature, and two strange women into friends. I concluded that Ruth needed to grow up a little.
Esperanza tells her life story in her own words, as far as is humanly possible in the translation from Spanish to English. Ruth is so determined to keep Esperanzas voice present (and I admire Ruth for this) that she allows some considerable repetition and confusion to remain and does not translate a large number of Spanish words. In other sections, Ruth places Esperanzas story in the context of Mexican culture, relates it to the fascinating cult of Pancho Villa, and to the context of the anthropological discourse in general. These chapters are very insightful, as are the sections in which Ruth talks about the nature of social science writing on Latin American women and of how North American feminists have tended to take control of feminist agenda in Third World countries, seeing women from those nations as sexually-constrained, ignorant, and controlled. She writes. One of the limitations of North American feminism has been its narrow definition of the kind of knowledge and practice that can be counted as feminist. Can I not speak of Esperanza as engaging in feminist thinking and practice in the way I have ?(p.297)
Esperanzas actions and beliefs are translated, not only into English, not only across the physical frontier, but into cultural terms that educated Americans can understand. In other words, Ruth becomes an interpreter, and---typically for her---worries that she might become a Malinche (a betrayer of Indian people to the Conquistadores). Finally, Ruth puts her own life into the picture, how she came to Anthropology, how she benefitted from her work, and her own ambivalence. If you have read to this point, you realize that TRANSLATED WOMAN is a highly complex work which can be read for many different purposes, discussed in endlessly different ways. One of the best anthropology books I have read in a long time, despite my criticism. Read it.

translated book
By K. Baker
This book was amazing. It was a very easy read, not like many ethnographies. It was so refreshing to have the author sit back and let someone else (Esperanza) talk for the first part, to tell us her historia. I also enjoyed the last part, her reflejo, because it showed the reader that she, indeed, is a real person. In doing this I came to see the real process it takes to write an ethnography, all the dillemmas, situations and problems that arrise. Wonderful overall.

Crossing the Border
By Iva Petrova
This is a beautiful narrative that crosses the boundaries of culture, class and gender to let the reader see life through the eyes of an uneducated Mexican woman. The authors tells the extraordinary story of Esperansa's life and the friendship she developed with her. (The author is a professor of anthropology at the University of Michigan).
In spite of the authors background, the style is rich and unique. The book would be easy read and very entertaining for people able to appreciate women's perceptions and spirituality in unprejudiced manner. I have very different backgound from both the writer and the main character and yet could relate to the story and the experience. It made me re-think my own cross cultural experiences and identity of a woman.

Gerhard Ertl, Fritz-Haber-Institute, Berlin, Nobel Laureate:

Since many years ‚“Thomas & Thomas” has been a comprehensive and profound guide to the complex area of heterogeneous catalysis and hence the community was waiting eagerly for the second edition. This is in fact much more than just a thoroughly revised version but rather an elegantly written new book covering the subject from its fundamental principles to its technological aspects, whereby all the important new developments during the last twenty years as well as relations to neighboring disciplines (such as biochemistry, electrochemistry or photochemistry) were taken into account. This work should become a classic and of indispensable value for everybody working in the field.

Jens K. Nørskov, Director, Center for Interface Science and Catalysis, Stanford University:

The Thomas textbook on heterogeneous catalysis provides the reader with an authoritative and comprehensive treatment of the science and technology of the field. The new version is completely updated with the newest developments and the elegant and extremely insightful presentation will capture the reader. It is required reading for anyone in the field, from starting students to practitioners in industry.

Yasuhiro Iwasawa, former President of the Chemical Society of Japan, Emeritus Professor, University of Tokyo:

The “Thomas & Thomas” has been a bible of the large community of heterogeneous catalysis, providing the scientific and technological compass, comprehensive guidance and profound knowledge of catalysis field as well as related disciplines. The second edition of the “Thomas & Thomas” with 9 chapters is a thoroughly revised and newly written book, covering diverse but important subjects from both fundamentals and industrial applications, documenting significant developments and historical milestones during the last twenty years, and involving emerging areas. This work should be highly recommended for everybody to have one copy each.

Michel Che, Université Pierre et Marie Curie, Paris, Past President of the International Association of Catalyst Societies:

This beautifully written second edition is a pure joy to read and is recommended both to senior university students and the practising researcher and industrialist. It gives the most general view of contemporary heterogeneopus catalysis, at the confluence of the practical and the fundamental and with the incentive of moving faster toward green chemistry, clean technology and sustainability.

Fierce feminist allegory
By Rose Scott
This is another powerful re-animation of myth by Madeline Miller. As in her story of Achilles, the mythic elements are not explained- this is the universe of the story and as readers we readily accept it. Galatea is a statue brought to life - okay - but why is she being held in a locked room of a hospital? That is the question that provides the story with its narrative drive.

The story floods with allegorical meaning when we realise that the husband, the sculptor, who created her and brought her to life is now imprisoning her because she wants a little too much life for his liking. Her failures of gratitude, and therefore of perfection, must be punished. It turns out that all the creepiness of the story resides not in the stone turning to flesh, but in the creator's need for pleasure and absolute control. Brilliant and horrifying.

"How I could both live and still be a statue..."
By Amelia Gremelspacher
In Greek myth, Galatea is a stone statue brought to life by the Goddess to answer the entreaty of the sculpture, now her husband. She is perfect, but has been given a soul. In this sharp, literate fantasy, a man who has worshiped stone is set to cope with a real woman. One could predict that such a man would be easily affronted and constantly in need of control. This is the story of that reality. The author has managed to avoid the usual cliche, and this makes this short richly enjoyable.

Dissappointing
By Edyta Brzeczkowska
I have to say I did not like the book. I read this authors "Achilles' song" which I loved and that is why I bought this one. It is a short story that left me annoyed and not too happy. I was very disappointed.

Love is a choice you make every day.

Feeling an instant connection to the mysterious ring bearing her namesake, Jane begins a journey to learn more about the ring—and perhaps about herself.

From Publishers Weekly
Starred Review. Veteran author Meissner (White Picket Fences) blends past and present in this compelling novel about making choices. Jane Lindsay never thought she'd be alone, but after her husband leaves her, she must face the reality of her marriage and life choices. One small ring, found in the binding of a book bought at an English rummage sale, changes the course of Jane's thinking as she researches another Jane, whose name is inscribed in the ring. Readers jump back in time to England after the death of Henry VIII. Lucy Day is ordered to Sudeley Castle, bearing a dress for Lady Jane Grey. Lucy narrates the tale of Lady Jane, pawn in the schemes of powerful men who seek the throne of England even as young Jane Grey is determined to live-and die-on her own terms. Modern Jane studies Lady Jane, coming to realize that she alone must choose how she lives. Both the history and the modern tale are enticing, with Meissner doing a masterful job blending the two.

Praise for Lady in Waiting
“Lady in Waiting is sheer beauty set in two time periods, both equally captivating stories. Meissner writes characters I care for, root for, and pine alongside—and she does so while weaving enticing, heart-wrenching plots. This book proves why I’m an ardent Susan Meissner fan.”

“Lady in Waiting by Susan Meissner: The pacing, perfection. Transitions between centuries, seamless. Capturing the nuances of relationship, flawless. Put anything written by Susan Meissner on your “must read now!” list, right beside Barbara Kingsolver and Elizabeth Berg. I couldn’t put this elegant novel of love and choice down. A completely satisfying read.”
—Jane Kirkpatrick, award-winning author of A Flickering Light and An Absence So Great

“A novel about decisions long regretted and decisions yet to be made, Lady in Waiting resonates with the great hope and exhilaration that come with the realization that there is always a choice.”

The subtlety of her storytelling makes Lady in Waiting both delightful to read and impossible to forget.”
—Nicole Baart, author of The Moment Between

Blew me away!
By Tiffany A. Harkleroad
Her whole life, Jane has done what others wanted, or expected, her to do. Or so she thought. But when her husband of 22 years leaves her, she is forced to start living life for herself. Along the way, she finds a ring from the 16th century, inscribed with Latin, and one word in English- JANE. Lady Jane is the second cousin to the King. She has so few choices in her life, no choice in her betrothal, no choice in her station in life. But finally, almost too late, she realizes she does have some control over her life. What can the Jane from yesterday teach the Jane of today?

I was thoroughly enchanted by this book, and would not have ever guessed it was published by a traditionally Christian publisher. It is a story with wide mainstream appeal. I love the juxtaposition of the stories of both Janes. I found both of the Janes, as well as Lucy, to be characters that really pulled on my heartstrings, they were so well developed and easy to relate to. Even the parts of the book that were taking place in the 16th century had such universal themes, one did not feel a huge gap due to the time setting.

A lot of times, when stories jump from character to character, or switch time periods, it can feel a but clunky, but not the case with this lovely story. The two stories really sort of echo each other, not necessarily in plot, but in theme and emotion. You heart breaks for each Jane in her own time.

I personally am fascinated with anything to do with the British monarchy, particularly in the 15th and 16th centuries, so this was right up my alley. If you enjoy the writings of Philippa Gregory, I think you will like this as well. With the modern day element, it will also draw in more traditional romance readers. Overall, I think this book is suitable for even older teenage readers, as several of the characters are in their teens for the majority of the book.

I am very anxious to read more from Susan Meissner, because this book literally blew me away.

I received a review copy of the book courtesy of the publisher.

Another wonderful blend of historical with modern-day fiction from Susan Meissner!
By Stacey
"Thank you" to Susan Meissner and her publisher for sending me a copy of "Lady In Waiting" to review for them. I am truly grateful for this generosity. I really appreciate the time, effort and expense it takes to make a reviewer copy available to me.

Susan Meissner truly has a gift for weaving a story that intertwines the historical past with the present. Her latest novel, "Lady In Waiting", is no exception. When Jane and Brad Lindsay end their 22-year marriage, Jane comes across a ring inscribed with the name she shares with a woman from her ancestry. Long-removed from the present-day Manhattan that Jane Lindsay calls home, Lady Jane Grey is an English lady of the 16th century, who is fifth in line to the throne from Henry VIII. Meissner builds a tale of intrigue and suspense that brings to life a historical moment in time and translates it into a modern interpretive framework.

This novel also contains a dozen discussion questions for your reading group. And I would highly recommend this novel (or "The Shape of Mercy") for your book group. I am also putting Meissner's other novels on my "must read" list.

Absolutely Fab
By Deborah
There is a reason why I always recommend Susan Meissner's books to people who don't normally read Christian fiction. The reason is because she is a #$*!@ good author! Honestly I have loved every single one of her books. Every time I pick up one of her stories, I KNOW I am going to be in for a good read. I hate when I get about 3/4 of the way through because the story is almost over and I'll have to wait months until the next one. Seriously though, she is one of my top 10 authors overall and almost everyone I've recommended her books to have enjoyed them as well.

This story deals with two women named Jane. The contemporary story focuses on Jane, a woman who works with antiques who suddenly has the rug thrown from under her when her husband decides he wants a separation. The surprise is that Jane doesn't know why he does or what she has done that has made him feel this way. Her story deals with her trying to figure out her life and how she is connected to the woman who owned the ring she found in a book. The second story is told from the view of Lucy, a dressmaker to Lady Jane Grey who is famous for being the Nine Days Queen. Their story imagines what could have possibly been a secret romance to Jane and the heartbreak she might have suffered before fate intervened.

This book gave me a whole new outlook in Jane Grey. I've always felt incredibly sorry for her because she was just a pawn who got sacrificed. This book made me see that even though her circumstances were tough, she could have made a different choice. Yes, she was in a world where she probably would have suffered no matter what she did but maybe things would have ended up differently if she had chosen NOT to go along with the plans everyone had for her. This part of the story seemed very authentic and I felt as I was thrust into 1600s England where you really don't want to be royalty as you will not be allowed to live the life you really want.

The switching between contemporary and historical story lines didn't bother me at all. I found both stories to be equally compelling and full of detail. I will admit since I knew the outcome of what was going to happen to Jane Grey, I was a bit wary of getting to the end of the story. However, since the story is told from Lucy's point of view and not from Jane's it makes the outcome more easier to handle. As for contemporary Jane, I ached for her because personally I didn't blame her for what was happening to her marriage. Yes, there should have been better communication between her and her husband but if she didn't know what was going on, how was she supposed to know what to do? The relationship with her mother was very interesting as I could relate to some of the things she was going through with her.

Overall, I loved this story. It is everything I love in stories combined in one excellently written book. If you have any interest in the Tudors, British history, or just love a good combination of historical and contemporary fiction, this book is perfect for you. I cannot recommend this book highly enough. I just now cannot wait until Meissner's next book comes out...it shall be a long and anxious wait. VERY HIGHLY recommended.
