The Last Dance, by Fiona McIntosh

It all started with just one dance . . .Stella Myles is forced to make ends meet by selling herself as a dance partner in a Piccadilly ballroom. Here she meets the enigmatic Montgomery, who orchestrates a job for her as governess with the wealthy Ainsworth family at Harp's End, Sussex. But at Harp's End nothing is as straightforward as it first seems. Stella encounters a family with more secrets than most, and struggles to fit in above or below stairs - although nothing proves so challenging as restraining her emotions for the mysterious Douglas Ainsworth. When Douglas announces that they are all to voyage aboard a cruise ship bound for Morocco, tensions reach impossible new heights and Stella finds herself left holding an incendiary document that she must get to London at all costs. From the rolling green hills of the Kentish Weald to the colourful alleys and bazaars of Morocco, this is a heart - stopping novel of romance, intrigue and danger - and a passion to risk dying for.

THE LAST DANCE? I DON'T THINK SO!!!!!!!
By Greggorio!
This latest release from the golden pen of Australian Fiction is about a young lady (Stella Myles), who is down on her luck in more ways than one. The book opens with a funeral, and by the end of chapter two we know her story, her family and her background. You may just find yourself completely in love with the brave young woman. The events transcribed in this chapter may well shock you, and there is no doubt the rising young starlet has had a bad life, but with the Gods of Fate shining a little ray of sunshine onto the overcast day Ms Myles calls her life, the reader may well feel justified in thinking some aspects are soon to improve. And they are. She is offered a job as a Governess to a wealthy family in Sussex, England, but as sure as day follows night, we learn that nothing is what it seems and her life is about to change in ways she (and the reader) have not even dreamed of.

The writing is fast and fluid, and features chapter ending hooks which are guaranteed to make the reader not want to put the story down. Marathon reading sessions are almost guaranteed, but (obviously) these are not recommended if you are experiencing this fine tome on the daily commute to, and from, work. The chapter lengths, as Walt Disney would say, are “just right” - that is, not too long, and not too short. But packed full of just the right level of information, emotion, and as I have just said, cliff hanger endings that maximises readers’ enjoyment levels.

It turns out that Stella and her new employers are soon (ish) off to Morocco and surrounds, and with personality clashes, love affairs and less than wholesome character motivations, things couldn’t get any worse for our heroine.

But they do.

I won’t reveal here what happens (it’s not my place) but rest assured that your heart rate will rise just as surely and just as swiftly as the action does in the book.

This is yet another strong release from this world class writer. I hereby award THE LAST DANCE a very encouraging four stars. Keep watching this space for updates as I progress through the story. I would not be surprised, given the heritage and talents of this authoress, if I end up giving it full marks.

BFN Greggorio!

An intriguing story of family secrets and deception
By Suncoast
This is an enjoyable and intriguing story by talented author Australian author Fiona McIntosh set in 1930's England. Stella, an impoverished but well educated young woman takes a job as a French/Piano governess/tutor to support her much younger brother and sister.

It all starts with a chance meeting with an unusual man at a Piccadilly ballroom who orchestrates a job with the wealthy but strange Ainsworth family at their huge home in Sussex. While Douglas Ainsworth welcomes her, his wife and teenage daughter don't want her help. Slowly Stella learns something about the family secrets and more about the world of the mysterious Douglas.

Things come to a head when Douglas decides to take his whole family and Stella on a cruise calling at North Africa, Egypt and the Holy Land leading to two unexpected endings.

Both Suncoast and Mrs Suncoast read and enjoyed this book. Mrs Suncoast read and enjoyed Fiona McIntosh's previous book Nightingaleand considered that this one is as good if not better. Mrs Suncoast gave this book 5 stars, Suncoast gave it 4.5 stars as it is not his normal genre.

Our thanks to Penguin Australia for an advanced copy of this book for review.

3D Studio MAX 2 Effects Reference is a comprehensive special effects resource for experienced users. The average busy animator doesn't have a lot of time to waste wading through detailed explanations of the software targeted at lower-level users-this book gets right to the point by providing the basic "recipes" for creating stunning effects. Each effect is presented in simple, numbered steps that are fully illustrated. Users will be able to create the effects, then place them in their own scenes and animations. Since 90% of the R& D is completed, the animator is free to spend time tweaking the effect to his or her taste rather than trying to invent it from scratch.

This approach is unique to the industry. The user base has progressed to a level where many users are above the hand-holding tutorials and instead need a collection of short how-tos and examples of real world techniques that they can plug into their work.

3D Studio MAX 2 Effects Reference contains over 100 effects which are categorized into logical sections for easy reference, such as:
-- Water Surfaces: crashing waves, moonlit ocean, violent rapids, drain vortex
-- Space Effects: asteroid fields, solar flares, super nova explosion
-- Cloud Dynamics: cumulus clouds, ominous clouds
-- Terrestrial Storms: tornado, thunderstorm, blizzard
-- Dramatic Fog: rolling swamp fog, morning mist
-- Mass Destruction: atomic bomb detonation, mushroom cloud, shockwave, volcanic eruption, earthquake
-- Pyrotechnics: fireworks, welding sparks, rocket engine glow, lasers
-- Underwater Ambiance: murky, flood lights, glowing beacons, dancing light rays,
-- Every Day Forces: smoke and steam, glass, fizz, drippingwax, footprints, jello matter, curtains blowing in the wind

Amazon.com Review
Using a slick, full-color format, this guide successfully arranges an impressive array of special effects for 3D Studio MAX 2. Part 1, "Water Effects," teaches you how to design water surfaces, underwater ambiance and kinetics, and gushing water. In part 2, "Space Effects," you learn how to create space ambiance, such as the sun and star fields, and you also create science fiction effects, such as a force field and an alien planetary sky. Part 3, "Atmospheric and Terrestrial Realism," teaches you how to create foggy and snowy weather conditions and natural disasters, such as lava flows. The fourth and last part, "Explosions and Pyrotechnics," shows you how to create, among other things, a mushroom cloud, a missile launch, fireworks, the glow of a rocket engine, black billowing smoke, and steam. Although the authors use helpful step-by-step instruction and plenty of screen shots, you'll want to know 3D Studio MAX fairly well to get the most out of this book. An included CD-ROM has four bonus effects--Brook, Stream, Wrinkles, and Flamethrower--as well as original MAX files that you use to create the book's effects. The CD-ROM also contains Map files and files showing the finished effects. --Kathleen Caster

Older work, but compatible still .. missing the CD, waiting for the CD
By WCSally
The book is for an older version of 3DSMax, but it is nice (for a newbie). However, it does depend upon the CD .. and in this case the CD has not yet shipped, as the envelope for it in the book was empty.

I am awaiting the vendor's choice of delivery; download would be fine. I certainly hope they can locate the information, as the lessons in the book all hinge on having the files from the CD!

Excellent book on special effects
By Brandon Klassen
This is an excellent book for learning special effects. Don't bother buying Max 3 Effects because this book has WAY more effects, better quality and better content-range of effects, it's way better value for your money, and it's entirely applicable to the new versions of Max, not too much has changed.
It tells you how to make cool water effects, build land geometry, do space effects, some cool weather effects, and more. If you just want to make terrain and water this book will be a great help. Or if you want to make a space scene this book has some great help in that area too to easily make starfields, planets, etc.
The quality here of what you can make (for the most part) is completely professional looking. It's full color all the way through as well which is a bonus for the price of the book. I've been into computer graphics since I was a kid, and although I'm just starting to properly learn Max now after using it for over a year, this book is a great help to get some cool effects easily.
You'll want to have a basic knowledge of the Max interface, because the book is very succinct. Also just by reading it and playing with Max you'll learn new things about the Material Editor and other areas that will help you overall doing 3d Animation.

Very useful book
By A Customer
I really find this book is a lot of fun. Not every effect is perfect, however, they don't need to be. I almost never use the effect the way they are defined in this book, but the great thing about this book is it gives you many starting ideas, from which you can tweak and change to come up with your own brilliant effects. If you have no imagination and just want to copy effects, then maybe this book isn't for you. If however you love to explore and experiment, seeking new and dazzling artistic effects, but would like a few clues how to get started, then this is a great place to begin. Let's face it, Max is huge and complex and there is a dizzying array of choices. I find it really useful to see how Carbonaro does it, then take his ideas and add my own. This book is for the artists, not the technicians.

Good one!
By Kindle Customer
This was a good one. Young girls should read this. It would've be great if there was a wise one for Nat to speak to. She was literally treated like a live doormat or like carp under Julius' shoes. I can't believe the amount of women this dude sleep with. It was disgusting. I know he's young, but like wow. He was like 24 hour 7-11. Natalia was young, naive and dumb. Of course it didn't help that her mom had her at 15. What could she teach her when she was a young girl herself with adults in her life. It's like a cycle you see today. There was enough drama and no need for the drug stuff or 11 karat rings and expensive shopping. It would be nice to just show struggling teens with no guidance trying to mature in today's society. That's enough drama. I like this book because it shows the naive thoughts of young girl falling in love for the first time and allowing someone to treat like she not worth anything. From the cheating to the abuse, she feels like this guy is her only salvation. It also shows a young man that wants to do right by his girl, but can't because he's young as well with no parents. He's been his own since early teens and been around nasty girls that only want him for financial reasons and status as his girl because he's known drug dealer. Julius is hurting on the inside and only person that cares is Nat. She doesn't care about the money and is so naive that she probably doesn't know about the drugs. I know she only 17, but she needs to grow up and get a backbone. She needs to fight for herself. Don't let Julius or anyone walk over her like that. It saddened me how she thought so low of herself and let Julius abuse her and cheat like that. Julius really needs a taste of his own medicine. He treats women like crap and doesn't deserve Nat. I hope she matured in part 2 which I'm about to read.

I was really into this book like emotionally drawn in it. I was mad when they gave a sneak of kiesha and trigga lol. Can't wait for part 2! Nat made me mad cause she should've been checked Julius and quit leading Frank on but I recommend if you looking a good read. Good Job!

All I can say is Julius is a male wh??e and he's crazy. He always want things to go his way.and Natalie is so naive she can't even think straight, I blame her mom because she didn't show her what love suppose to look like. I hope someone come to her rescue before it's to late. I think all these side chicks have some sort of low self esteem because they keep running up behind this man that don't care about them and he tells them in their faces what's it all about.SMH

NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • The magnum opus and latest work from Svetlana Alexievich, the 2015 winner of the Nobel Prize in Literature—a symphonic oral history about the disintegration of the Soviet Union and the emergence of a new Russia

NAMED ONE OF THE TEN BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY THE WASHINGTON POST AND PUBLISHERS WEEKLY • NAMED ONE OF THE BEST BOOKS OF THE YEAR BY TIME

When the Swedish Academy awarded Svetlana Alexievich the Nobel Prize, it cited her for inventing “a new kind of literary genre,” describing her work as “a history of emotions—a history of the soul.” Alexievich’s distinctive documentary style, combining extended individual monologues with a collage of voices, records the stories of ordinary women and men who are rarely given the opportunity to speak, whose experiences are often lost in the official histories of the nation.

In Secondhand Time, Alexievich chronicles the demise of communism. Everyday Russian citizens recount the past thirty years, showing us what life was like during the fall of the Soviet Union and what it’s like to live in the new Russia left in its wake. Through interviews spanning 1991 to 2012, Alexievich takes us behind the propaganda and contrived media accounts, giving us a panoramic portrait of contemporary Russia and Russians who still carry memories of oppression, terror, famine, massacres—but also of pride in their country, hope for the future, and a belief that everyone was working and fighting together to bring about a utopia. Here is an account of life in the aftermath of an idea so powerful it once dominated a third of the world.

A magnificent tapestry of the sorrows and triumphs of the human spirit woven by a master, Secondhand Time tells the stories that together make up the true history of a nation. “Through the voices of those who confided in her,” The Nation writes, “Alexievich tells us about human nature, about our dreams, our choices, about good and evil—in a word, about ourselves.”

Praise for Svetlana Alexievich and Secondhand Time

“There are many worthwhile books on the post-Soviet period and Putin’s ascent. . . . But the nonfiction volume that has done the most to deepen the emotional understanding of Russia during and after the collapse of the Soviet Union of late is Svetlana Alexievich’s oral history Secondhand Time.”—David Remnick, The New Yorker

“Like the greatest works of fiction, Secondhand Time is a comprehensive and unflinching exploration of the human condition. . . . In its scope and wisdom, Secondhand Time is comparable to War and Peace.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Already hailed as a masterpiece across Europe, Secondhand Time is an intimate portrait of a country yearning for meaning after the sudden lurch from Communism to capitalism in the 1990s plunged it into existential crisis.”—The New York Times

“There’s been nothing in Russian literature as great or personal or troubling as Secondhand Timesince Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago, nothing as necessary and overdue. . . . This is the kind of history, otherwise almost unacknowledged by today’s dictatorships, that matters.”—The Christian Science Monitor

“In this spellbinding book, Svetlana Alexievich orchestrates a rich symphony of Russian voices telling their stories of love and death, joy and sorrow, as they try to make sense of the twentieth century.”—J. M. Coetzee

“Like the greatest works of fiction, Secondhand Time is a comprehensive and unflinching exploration of the human condition. . . . Alexievich’s tools are different from those of a novelist, yet in its scope and wisdom, Secondhand Time is comparable to War and Peace.”—The Wall Street Journal

“Already hailed as a masterpiece across Europe, Secondhand Time is an intimate portrait of a country yearning for meaning after the sudden lurch from Communism to capitalism in the 1990s plunged it into existential crisis. A series of monologues by people across the former Soviet empire, it is Tolstoyan in scope, driven by the idea that history is made not only by major players but also by ordinary people talking in their kitchens.”—The New York Times

“The most ambitious Russian literary work of art of the century . . . There’s been nothing in Russian literature as great or personal or troubling as Secondhand Time since Aleksandr Solzhenitsyn’s The Gulag Archipelago, nothing as necessary and overdue. . . . Alexievich’s witnesses are those who haven’t had a say. She shows us from these conversations, many of them coming at the confessional kitchen table of Russian apartments, that it’s powerful simply to be allowed to tell one’s own story. . . . This is the kind of history, otherwise almost unacknowledged by today’s dictatorships, that matters.”—The Christian Science Monitor

“Alexievich’s masterpiece—not only for what it says about the fall of the Soviet Union but for what it suggests about the future of Russia and its former satellites. . .  Stylistically, Secondhand Time, like her other books, produces a mosaic of overlapping voices… deepened by extraordinary stories of love and perseverance.”—Newsweek

“A trove of emotions and memories, raw and powerful . . . [Secondhand Time] is one of the most vivid and incandescent accounts of [Soviet] society caught in the throes of change that anyone has yet attempted. . . . Alexievich stations herself at a crossroads of history and turns on her tape recorder. . . . [She] makes it feel intimate, as if you are sitting in the kitchen with the characters, sharing in their happiness and agony.”—The Washington Post

“An enormous investigation of the generation that saw communism fall, [Secondhand Time] gives a staggeringly deep and plural picture of a people that has lost its place in history.”—San Francisco Chronicle

“Secondhand Time, [Alexievich’s] latest book to be translated into English, is her most ambitious yet. . . . Its themes of hope and loss are universal. . . . A professional listener, Ms. Alexievich manages the feat of being present and invisible at the same time. . . . The result is always warm and human, however dark the content. Many of the people the author meets simply want to talk, sharing memories they had held on to for years or decades. With Secondhand Time, Ms. Alexievich has built a monument to these survivors of the collapse of the Soviet Union; a monument in words.”—The Economist

“[Alexievich’s] writing is sui generis, blending the force of fact with the capaciousness of fiction to create a new, vital literary compound.”—The Nation

“In Secondhand Time, the 2015 Nobel Laureate deftly orchestrates dozens of voices. . . . By letting her subjects keep their dignity, Alexievich has given us a fuller history of the fall of the Soviet Empire than we had before. By letting the vanquished speak, we might know better what, if anything, was actually won.”—Chicago Tribune

“A compelling vision of the human condition.”—Associated Press

“The Nobel Prize winner documents the last days of communism in the Soviet Union and the dawn of a new way of living in contemporary Russia. Through interviews with ordinary citizens, she finds the truth behind the headlines.”—Time

“If you want to understand contemporary Russia, Secondhand Time is essential reading.”—Newsday

“An epic chronicle of the fall of the Soviet Union and the emergence of a new Russia, in the unadorned voices of its ordinary citizens . . . Told in solos and choruses, her books have the rise and fall of a symphony.”—Vogue

“Alexievich’s most ambitious project to date—a panoramic study of ordinary lives affected by the downfall of the Soviet system. . . . By careful listening and editing, she turns the transcripts of an interview into a spoken literature that carries all the truth and emotional power of a great novel.”—The New York Review of Books

“For her polyphonic writings, a monument to suffering and courage in our time.”—Nobel Prize Committee

“For the past thirty or forty years [Alexievich has] been busy mapping the Soviet and post-Soviet individual, but [her work is] not really about a history of events. It’s a history of emotions . . . a history of the soul.”—Sara Danius, permanent secretary of the Swedish Academy

“In this spellbinding book, Svetlana Alexievich orchestrates a rich symphony of Russian voices telling their stories of love and death, joy and sorrow, as they try to make sense of the twentieth century, so tragic for their country.”—J. M. Coetzee

“[Alexievich’s] books are woven from hundreds of interviews, in a hybrid form of reportage and oral history that has the quality of a documentary film on paper. But Alexievich is anything but a simple recorder and transcriber of found voices; she has a writerly voice of her own which emerges from the chorus she assembles, with great style and authority, and she shapes her investigations of Soviet and post-Soviet life and death into epic dramatic chronicles as universally essential as Greek tragedies. . . . A mighty documentarian and a mighty artist.” —Philip Gourevitch

“Alexievich’s voices are those of the people no one cares about, but the ones whose lives constitute the vast majority of what history actually is.”—Keith Gessen

“Riveting . . . Other oral histories have relied on a blended structure whereby the individual stories form the supporting elements to the historians’ larger narrative; the grace and power of Alexievich’s work is the focus on intimate accounts, which set the stage for a more eloquent and nuanced investigation. A must for historians, lay readers, and anyone who enjoys well-curated personal narratives.”—Library Journal (starred review)

“[Alexievich] documents the last days of the Soviet Union and the transition to capitalism in a soul-wrenching ‘oral history’ that reveals the very different sides of the Russian experience. . . . [Her] work turns Solzhenitsyn inside out and overpowers recent journalistic accounts of the era. . . . She spends hours recording conversations, sometimes returning years later, and always trying to go beyond the battered and distrusted communal pravda to seek the truths hidden within individuals.”—Publishers Weekly (starred review)

“A rich kaleidoscope of voices from all regions of the former Soviet Union . . . profoundly significant literature as history.”—Kirkus Reviews (starred review)

“Absorbing and important.”—Booklist (starred review)

Secondhand Time
By History Enthusiast
Having read hundreds of books on the Soviet Union and today's Russia there are few that make the kind of impression that Alexievich's latest foray into the lives of generations of former Soviet men and women has left on me. "Secondhand time" is a book about life and death, suffering, tragedy, the human condition and what life is like in a space that encompasses a world not totally forgotten, that of the Soviet Union, and one not totally understood, crony capitalism moving in the direction of new-age fascism. The weaknesses or biases of the book are few, even though they are important to remember. This is a book based on human memory and one that mainly concentrates of women and their stories, all too often filled with adversity, desperation, humiliation and misfortune. Although human memory is imperfect, there are snapshots that have entered everyone's consciousness and which can readily be recalled that seem to portray events that took place just yesterday yet truly occurred years or decades ago. As the interviewees discuss traumatic events in their lives (war, terrorism, murder, violence, etc.), there is more reason to believe that what they are recalling is closer to an emotionally honest and raw remembrance than a self-censored, stylized depiction of events. In some ways I would compare this volume with Solzhenitsyn's Gulag Archipelago in its emotionally draining narrative. At almost five hundred pages this is a book best consumed slowly, methodically, with a lot of stops and interruptions to give readers time to digest what they've read and what has been related to them.

The book itself is divided into two main sections, interviews from the 1990s when the Soviet Union fell apart and those from the 2000s. The 1990s were best represented by regular violence in the streets, against everyday people and newly created "businessmen." Many were angry and could not understand how authorities could simply "give away" what was the "Soviet Empire." The social-contract that previously existed was done away with. Where previously people might not have trusted the government or its organs, they understood that jobs, medical care, education, etc., would be available and provided for those in need. When "capitalism" was announced, with no real explanation by authorities or understanding by the majority of the population, social and cultural ideals cultivated under the Soviets for decades were replaced by the all mighty dollar. Those with connections or the "entrepreneurial spirit" - who didn't see it as beneath themselves to sell, buy, barter and "hustle" their way to better living conditions - did well, while those who continued to believe that the state would or should provide the basic necessities of life, or were simply not equipped for a capitalist market, suffered. Seniors, who survived the Stalinist purges and lived to see victory in the Second World War were looked down upon. These men and women defined themselves against a state that "won the war" and "beat Hitler" but were viewed as useless beneficiaries of a system that, while they might have fought and suffered for, no longer existed.

Gangs preyed on the weak and violence was a daily occurrence the results of which could be seen on the streets by passersby. Xenophobia that was kept in check by Soviet authorities appeared once more as minor conflicts broke out in the Baltics, among Armenians and Azerbaijanis and in Central Asia. Neighbors and friends that you previously got along with or played with as children turned violent and vengeful. Moscow became the beacon that many were drawn to, looking for a better life. Men left their families behind to seek migrant work while women left everything and everyone to make a new life for themselves. All too often they found abuse and humiliation.

The more remarkable accounts that make up the vignettes the author includes in this work are that of a former NKVD worker and how he performed executions on a regular basis - he compared the "quotas" that were sent down from higher ups to the quotas that factories and workers were regularly issued and made to adhere to. Both served the state - one created goods needed by the state while the other destroyed perceived enemies of the state. Those recalling their time in Stalinist prisons and camps offered moving testimony and profound accounts. As the system and its cogs went through the motions, all too often victims were turned into executioners and executioners into victims - the previously mentioned NKVD worker was in turn arrested and served seven years. This is a text that will long stay with readers. It's less of a testimony for or against the former Soviet Union or its citizens than a look at the lives of people who have suffered trauma and tragedy in their lives due to events beyond their control.

Interesting, but repetitive
By Thomas Reiter
I just finished this rather intense book and wanted to provide a review. If you are looking for a book about balalaikas and ballerinas, Tolstoy and troikas, this is not the book for you--this is a book about the tsunami of misery and ruin which engulfed many inhabitants of the Soviet Union in the aftermath of its collapse--the inhabitants that didn't understand what happened to their old world, or how to live in the new one... Just for context, I lived in Moscow in the summer of 1992, summer of 1993, 1994-2000, and 2008-2016 and have traveled extensively in Russia, so I have quite a lot of experience with the place. Generally I found this book to be interesting, but too long, and too focused on negative topics.

First, I can't really agree with reviewers that considered the interviews "false"; they seemed real enough to me.

Second, the author has done a very good job of finding a particular type of Russian (namely, the inhabitants described in the first paragraph) and recording their stories--their thoughts, feelings, hopes, and disappointments--this is powerful stuff, and for the first couple of hundred pages, I found it quite interesting, but eventually the stories became repetitive, tedious, and very depressing.

Third, somehow the author has managed to portray Russia and Russians, a very varied and complex place and people, in monotones--very dark, depressing monotones. For someone who does not know better, reading this book would leave the very strong impression that all Russians are miserable, pathetic, bitter wretches or psychopaths. Seriously, I've never read a book that mentions more suicides and murders--it seems like every couple of pages there is a new one. If you don't know much about Russia and hope to learn more about it, please don't start with this book, you'll come away with a very warped understanding! Again, not a false understanding, but only a very partial one... And I was fascinated to read how many Russians (all of them, as far as I could tell from the book) equated freedom with "salami" (actually, as another review points out, "sausage").

Fourth, I guess the author's intent is to simply tell the narrators' stories rather than frame or comment on them in any way, but for me it would have been interesting for the author to have done more to "connect the dots" by tying the various narratives into some overarching themes, etc, rather than simply relating dozens of individual and unrelated stories. Also, it would have been good to know more about how the author found and selected her interview subjects--sometimes I wondered if she hadn't found most of them in some kind of asylum...

Finally, best case, for someone hoping to understand today's Russia, this book will be of very limited utility--it focuses on the nineties, and the stories and narratives from those days are no longer particularly reflective of what's going on in Russia today, although they are helpful in understanding where Russia ended up where it is today. Instead of writing about the "last of the Soviets", I think that a more interesting book (and more useful someone trying to understand today's Russia and where it is going) would be about the "first of the post-Soviets"--either those who grew up under the Soviets but then successfully transformed under the new environment, or those who have grown up since the nineties and without any personal knowledge of the Soviet system at all. That would be a fascinating book, and if this author writes such a book, I would certainly read it.

Wind of Change
By W Perry Hall
"I follow the Moskva
Down to Gorky Park
Listening to the wind of change."
Scorpions, Wind of Change, 1990.

This book was a brass-knuckles punch to my arrogant American belief that all Russians and Eastern Europeans welcomed capitalism with open arms. This is the incinerating oral history of the the ursine Soviet Union and Eastern Bloc from 1991, the time of perestroika, until 2012. The author is Svetlana Alexievich, the 2015 Nobel Laureate in Literature from Belarusia. It was published originally in 2013, but translated into English only this year.

The oral history is split into two different periods: first from 1991 to 2001 as the transition from Communism was occurring, and from 2002-2012, which shows, I think, the reverberations of the transformation and transition. This book hits full-throttle from page 1 and is unrelenting until the last page. I've never read anything like it. It's a raw raising of the Iron Curtain to stories of the violence, the attempt to overthrow Gorbachev by the old line communists, suicides and rapes. The first part was taken down while some of the old communists who lived under Stalin were still alive and includes a few jarring jeremiads to solidarity, Lenin, Stalin, and the communistic ideal of heaven on earth.

An example of one of the old Bolsheviks: "You have your own utopia. The market. Market heaven. The market will make everyone happy. Pure fantasy. The streets are filled with gangsters in magenta blazers, gold chains hanging down to their bellies. Caricatures of capitalism. A farce. Instead of the dictatorship or the proletariat, it's the law of the jungle. Devour the ones weaker than you and bow down to the ones who are stronger."

Both parts tell of all the problems in the transition without any planning. People starving. Former Communist apparatchiks who were esteemed scientists who now are unemployed and homeless. Complete overhauls to a way of living from the overnight move from communism to a capitalism-based economy. I plan to read this again because there was so much to digest; the author calls this form of oral history "snatches of street noise and kitchen conversations." I was shocked, for example, to learn of how much the ones interviewed hate Gorbachev now, though they supported him in the early 1990s.

This was like a Thunderbolt thrown into my routine reading. A stunning book that should probably be required reading in any history/civilization type of course.

Gosh its so...bad...one of VS. worse...
By A Customer
The only reason I gave this guide two stars was because it had a walkthrough. Remember the good ol days? When Versus Books released all the good guides? You could never go wrong when you went with Versus Books. I remember their FF7 guide...it was the greatest RPG guide ever made! Then came their Resident Evil 2 guide which is arguably their best (competing with their FF7 and MGS guide for that title), next was MGS and then Zelda 64 and they went on and on.
Is this guide another "homerun" like their Wild Arms 2 guide was? No...in fact its one of their worse guides. Versus Books has obviously started to fall where they once succeeded. Ever since their Grandia II guide on PS2 (never saw the Dreamcast one but I've heard its the exact same) their guides have only grown worse.
First of all, the guide has a nice walkthrough but unlike past guides they don't have "Basic Training" section. They don't even have character bios. What ever happened to Versus Books going beyond your average strategy guide? Now they're BELOW your average strategy guide. The guide goes directly into the walkthrough from the get go. No introductions or telling you how to use the books or anything. They don't tell you stats for overworld monsters and the walkthorugh is full of typos. There was a key point in the game where I was supposed to return to Little Rock. The guide said I had to return to little twister, and while it was easy to differentiate it took a moment because the game didn't say where to go next at that point.
The item appensix isn't detailed but they did cover the Millenium Puzzles. Also, while they didn't take the fun out of te game the walkthrough was very bland and unintersting to read. It was as if a robot was talking to me in my mind. What's worse? Not enough screenshots. They showed ONE measly screenshot for each task to do when you may need a few more.
Also, this guide has no bestiary and that isn't a problem but they also do not tell you overworld monster stats. Also, should an enemy reappear in another dungeon, the guide forces you to flip back several pages (much like their Grandia II guide did).
My biggest gripe...well not so big gripe, was that they gave no tips on how to raise your ARMS which I could've used some suggestions. Another small gripe that I had was that they didn't detail personal skills or arcana very well. I would've like if they had an Arcana table in the back or something but they coudln't even do that! It's all in the walkthrough which is an endless amount of pages!
The only reason to get this guide would be for the EX File Keys and puzzle solutions. Everything else is pretty much useless, no good boss strategies that only tell you to attack and heal. They don't tell you what to expect from a boss like they did in past guides. Maps are also very undetailed with minor flaws but they're difficult to navigate.
Lastly, the world map isn't drawn to scale and they're missing some locations! Not only that but they don't give good directions in the walkthrough to get to those areas.
Now for those red hot juicy secrets that Versus Books is really good at collecting. Wait...umm...there are no cheap tricks anymore! They cover basic secrets already mentioned in the game. They don't help you defeat secret bosses (no overall strategy like they did in WA2 guide.). They give you EX-File keys and they explain the secrets of "Finest Arts" but they don't cover the cheap tricks you can do (There IS an infinite money trick for this game!) and they don't tell you what you can steal from enemies either!
Overall, there is no reason to waste money on this guide. The last good RPG guide I saw from Versus books was Grandia Xtreme. Now that was a good versus books guide, but eversince WA2 and their Pokemon guides, I haven't seen any good RPG guide (or very many good guides period) from Versus Books. Whatever happened to going BEYOND the game? Leave this on the shelf and go to GameFAQs.com for game info.

Another RPG guide by VB and its great! But only 4.5 stars
By Tsanche
This is a pretty good guide. I only have about two or three small problems with the guide (see below) but to be truthful it really is one of the best and most well-organized RPG guide I've seen.
To start off, if you want a guide that won't take the fun out of WA3-then this one is for you! There are not plot spoilers in the guide making it more useful.
The walkthrough is well organized and easy to use. Its quick, organized, and most importantly, to the point! With beautifully done maps, and clear screens. The boss strategies are good at first, but then begin to lack a little. Not to mention that the guide doesn't give a strategy for optional bosses, but it will say the stats at least.
You can find all 15 EX keys relatively easily with this guide in hand. They also have all the Millenium puzzle solutions, and all the side quest.
The world map is nice but as in most RPG games nowadays you probably won't need it. The other gripe I had, as I have with RPG guides from VERSUS off the past is that they have no battle tips for beginners and no game basics! What kind of guide doesn't help you get adjusted to the game first?
Oh well, moving on, the items list could've used more detail than I got from it, but hey, its still there so don't worry about it. It would have also been better to have an Arcana list in the back instead of making me fish through the walkthrough.
OVERALL: This was a great guide. Not a "Perfect" guide (their WA2 guide was much better) but not a "Strategy" Guide either. Its more like you companion rather than just a book that gets worn on the shelf.
POSITIVE
+Detailed maps
+Organized walkthrough
+No story spoilers
+Find all 15 Ex keys
+Millenium puzzle solutions
+All side quests and secrets
NEGATIVE
-No game basics and battle tips
-No strategies for most optional bosses
Pretty good guide. I'd have given it a five if it didn't have all thse small little tweaks that they didn't work out.

“Der Voorghmia, Der Voorghmia” (“Lord Have Mercy, Lord Have Mercy”)

Dateline: The Middle East…Innocent Christians starved, burned, beheaded, and crucified…

The haunting cries of helpless women and children taken from Today’s News Headlines, AND amazingly those of a century ago!

April of the year 2015 marks the 100th anniversary of the tragic persecution and death of more than a million Armenians in what were the initial mass genocide, and the first Muslim “Holy War” of the Twentieth Century. Strangely enough, with the sudden emergence of ISIS, a very similar crime is currently being perpetrated in virtually the same place, against the same type of targeted, innocent victims. After one hundred years have elapsed, the wounds of have never truly healed. Turks and Armenians remain bitterly divided over charges and counter-charges regarding the causes, responsibility, and admission of guilt. Yet despite the never-ending acrimony and angry debate, the American public today knows very little about the catastrophe, even though it was widely discussed in this country a century ago. It is high time that the subject is revisited. Much has been written regarding the tragic episode of 1915, but virtually all of it is either highly subjective, representing the view of only one side or the other, or is too scholarly for a general audience. What is sorely needed is a well researched and unbiased book that presents a balanced introduction to the historic calamity that is still so current in its repercussions.

History DOES repeat itself! Read how the headlines of today were truly forged in the century past.

Must Read-non biased Historical review of the Armenian Genocide.
By Chuck H.
Buy this book. Very fair and balanced research by a neutral writer on the Armenian Genocide. Over 300 books were consulted and referenced. This book should be in all history classrooms throughout the world. It is the story of what can happen to the heart of man when another human being- or in this case- a Christian nation- is viewed as dispensable for the greater good of a religion or a country. I am a well versed historian on the Armenian Genocide and found things in this book that I never knew. Why it happened, why it was not prevented, how was it premeditated and carried out.
If you think you have problems with your life, read what happened to 1.5 million Armenians. Suddenly our issues become somewhat small.
Mr Marris has spoken for the silenced mothers, grandmothers, orphans and men who were destroyed by the Ottoman Turks of 1915-1921. The Voice is strong, powerful and it is the truth.
